Poor instructions and poor information online.

We took Two of these to Haiti along with new energizer lithium batteries. One would treat once or twice before one needed new batteries. The other would work once or never. The SteriPen Ultra worked fine. I also had Iodine tablets. I did check SteriPen's Website and did not find good information on trouble shooting this device. Fortunately, We had another device to treat water and I had Iodine tablets. After returning to the states and getting a better internet connection, I found that several folks had the same problem. It turns out that the sensors are sensitive to moisture and in the tropics you have to dry them multiple times. SteriPen mentions drying once in their information, but needs to emphasize this issue and put on the device to dry sensors twice. I would include the instructions on the device as I did not have them with me. I would have returned it to Amazon but was just past their return window. I would not buy a device like this from Amazon. I did buy a Ultra last week at a Paddling show and the sales person mentioned the issue with humidity and only had the Ultra at the show.

I bought a SteriPEN Traveler specifically to use for treating ...

I bought a SteriPEN Traveler specifically to use for treating water during a 5-hour trail run in Hawaii where there would be no potable water sources. I tested it at home, and it worked as designed. On my run, it worked the first time I needed to treat water but none of the subsequent times. Each time, the light would come on when I pressed the button, but nothing happened when I placed the tip into the water. The only thing I could think of was that the tip was too damp between uses (I think I read something about that), so I thoroughly dried it out and even tried packing the tip in tissue to wick away moisture, but it still didn't work. Luckily, I brought iodine as a back-up. I called SteriPEN, whose website indicates that they are serious about customer feedback and product improvements, but they weren't interested in troubleshooting what went wrong. I returned it to the seller.

great product and service

year's later UPDATE:

Had a problem with the pen (red indicator was coming on and not allowing it to work). called customer service... and they seem to have diagnosed the problem over the phone. its working again! IF, i am prematurely excited about the fix, they offered that i could send it back to them for repair or replacement. so, still super stoked about the steripen and service that backs this solid product.

really hard to know if it is really cleaning your liquids... but if you have confidence in the technology than it seems to work great. it is relatively light... easily uses rechargeable AA bats and they last a long time (as in over a month for me of daily use of about a liter or two per day). i did use it with drinks other than water... like fruit juices... and needed to thoroughly clean the two probes... sensors... as even invisible to the eye contamination of them caused it not to work. once i figured it out and really cleaned them... back to excellent and reliable service.

A light saber for fighting germs!

I purchased this product last year before going on a 2-month backpacking trip around Southeast Asia. I lost count of how many times I used it! It's so small, light, and easy to use. When there are so many bad things that could happen from drinking contaminated or poor quality water, there is zero reason not to purchase one of these if you are in a high-risk area. Even though bottled water is fairly inexpensive in the part of the world where we were traveling, being able to filter tap water was so much more convenient (and free).

Quick and efficient water sterilizers - great for camping!

The SteriPen was great on my trip to Chile in Las Torres del Paine National Park. While the pen was not completely necessary as everyone said you could drink the water from the stream it was great to have the quick and efficient pen by our side.

The good:

It takes less than 2 minutes to clean a nalgene bottle full of water

Very simple to read when the water was ready

Call outs:

It is a little fickle if the pen is not submerged to a certain length, so make sure the container hole is wide enough to fit the pen in

The pen works best with with lithium batteries (non-alkaline) so it will cost more than your normal four packs of batteries

Tried and tested.

As a fun little experiment I used a sticky note which I keep in the cap and wrote .5 liter and 1.0 liter and little hash marks under each in a column form. So, I got about 30 uses of each over about 3 months on the same Lithium Ion Batteries. Pretty good I think. I then kind of forgot about it and fired it up again after 2 months of sitting and it worked then after it was done gave me the "change batteries" light code, i changed the batteries, tried it again and it worked just like the first time. If the water is safe to drink is anyone's guess but the light always comes on.

worth it

We heeded the warnings from other reviewers to make sure to let the SteriPEN dry thoroughly, and it worked beautifully for us. We used it as a precaution on a trip to the Caribbean. They claim to have clean water, so it may have been totally unnecessary, but it gave me enough peace of mind to repay the cost. I drank more freely than I would have otherwise, which helped in the heat, and I think that drinking lots of sterilized water also helped us stay healthy.

Wouldn't trust in a bind

I'm not convinced it wasn't user error but once I got in the middle of nowhere I realized I couldn't get this thing to turn on, and then when I wasn't using it I couldn't get it to turn off. I had the instructions with me thankfully and did as they recommended but when it comes to purifying water I'd rather have something with a less likely chance of breaking or being difficult to use. I'll stick to pumps and tablets.

Easy to use and effective!

I was going to Peru for 3 weeks and scared of all the lovely illnesses you can get from the water if you are a foreigner. So I bought the SteriPEN together with the Lifestraw Water Bottle (http://www.amazon.com/LifeStraw-Bottle-Integrated-1000-Liter-Filter/dp/B00H90PFOK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1421624032&sr=8-2&keywords=lifestraw). I would fill up the water bottle most of the way, use the SteriPEN, then screw on the lid and I was good to go. It saved me money on bottled water and was super easy to use. It's a little heavier than I expected once you put the batteries in, but I carried it everywhere with me without a problem and it saved me when public water fountains were my only option.

Too Fragile

I have treated about 20 liters of water with the steripen traveler. The steripen is always packed safely and has not been abused in any way. I have always used the recommended type of batteries. The LED indicator light no longer works. The UV light is working when submerged in water but without the indicator light testing water is guess work. Something intended for travel might need to be more durable.
