Great for 1/4 lb Sticksby Ryan Houseknecht (4 out of 5 stars)

This butter dish is great for common, American, 1/4 LB(1/2cup) sticks of butter. These are the most common sticks of butter you'll find at your grocery store. It seems to be sturdy, well made, and cleans up easily in the dishwasher. The underside of the bottom tray is unfinished which may or may not scratch some surfaces(not mine) but it does provide some friction so that it doesn't go sliding all over the counter-top. All in all, I am very happy with this product and would absolutely recommend it to a friend. I tried my best to describe common butter sizes below so that you can determine if your favorite butter will fit or need altered.
This will not fit the 1/2 LB(1cup) sticks of Irish/European butter like the Kerry Gold. Not because the Kerry Gold is too wide but because the Buddah cover is too shallow at a couple of the corners(Budda's elbow and lowered knee). Normal 1/4 LB sticks can be placed in the middle of the tray and are unaffected by the corners but, with the 1/2 LB sticks, the entire inside rim of the tray is full and the cover will ultimately rest on the corner of the butter until it is lopped off.
The bottom tray measures 6.5"x4" with a ring on the inside to mark where the cover will rest measuring 5" x 2 3/8". 1/4 LB butter sticks east of the Rocky Mountains will measure 4.8"L x 1.3"W while those sold west of the Rockies will measure 3.1"L x 1.5"W. Kerry Gold and some other European butters sold in 1/2 LB sizes typically measure 4 1/8"L x 2 3/8"W x 1 7/8"H.

^_^ Love this dish.
I've used it for a while now and have only accidentally chipped the corner (my fault) and scratched through the glaze on his belly (wasn't happy the white part is so thin). I haven't had any problems with the white glaze coming off in chunks that others mentioned, but I never put butter in a fridge (lives on my counter) or washed it in a dishwasher ( I hand wash it ). The butter does tend to hit the inside, but that doesn't bug me much since I wash it after the butter runs out and it doesn't do it much.
Our cat has re-considered his karma

Our sweet well-mannered cat had turned into an incorrigible butter thief, and refused to mend his ways. The Buddah-Butta dish was a great find. Just the sight of Buddha has gotten our striped friend to contemplate his ways and clean up his karma by not cleaning up our butter. Now every morning is more cheerful when we arrive to find our butter free of kitty tongue prints and our Buddha plumper than our cat's tummy.
This is PERFECT!!

This is PERFECT!!!! I HATE when butter gets all over the top and or side of my butter dish, making it an uncontrollable flying object of death every time I try to butter a piece of toast. I've dropped and shattered more than one lid in my day. NOT ANYMORE!! The contours of his awesome Buddha body make it easy to hold in your hand without fatality.

I love my buttah buddah so much. He's adorable. He hides a 1/4 of butter in traditional American sticks. Seems sturdy enough, hasn't cracked or chipped yet. However, I wouldn't put this in the dishwasher, I think you'll end up cracking the glaze with the heat from the dry cycle. The bottom is unglazed which might scratch some counters.
Overall, I love him. He makes me happy.

Both a conversation piece, and quite practical as well. Looks good on the counter.
We're going to be careful about putting it into our dishwasher. We've had problems with china going in there and getting shadows on the surface from liquid forced into microcracks on the glaze.
But really, how often doen a butter dish needs washing? Only enough to maintain Inner Peace!
Very Cool!

I've never reviewed a product on Amazon before, but this little guy is so cool I couldn't resist. "Buddah-Butta", once we got this guy on our table we couldn't stop saying it. Even my three year old twins...
We keep him right next to our "Naughty bunny" salt and pepper shakers. (We got those from shopplasticland.com) Also too funny!
I was worried the dish would be small or cramped for butter, but it holds a stick with lots of room to spare. The only concern about this guy would be break-ability. We've had no trouble but I'd be careful when washing. Anyhoo, way cool and something you and your dinner guests will surely talk about around the table.
More decorative than practical

I bought this a few years ago and love the design. However, the glaze is uneven and porous. The oil from the butter can actually seep through the dish and the bottom (which is unglazed) will eventually become greasy.
Love it!

I love my Buddha Dish! Bar of butter fits in here perfectly. Its strongly built, doesn't feel weak and frail. At the same time it is delicate, with the decorative piece being heavier.

Got this as a gift for my friend. She loves it! I know this because she said so and also every time i got to her house i see it in use. (she leaves her butter out! which i thought you had to keep it in the fridge, but apparently it's ok to leave it out)
