Disappointing.

I've been wanting these for about two years, as I fall asleep to asmr videos every night. I use earbuds, but I'm a side sleeper and can only use one in the side I'm not lying on, otherwise it hurts my ear. Inconveniently, when I want to turn to my other side, I have to wake up and switch the earbud. I thought the sleepphones would solve this problem.

I finally broke down and bought them. The fit is fine, the sound is fine. I got the lighter material band because I thought fleece sounded to warm. I pull them down over my eyes and that works great for blocking out light.

However, I wake up with my ear hurting a lot from lying on the speaker, which aren't as small/thin as I was expecting. If I'm not using them for sleeping, they're great, but considering that's the whole purpose of them, being uncomfortable during sleep is a big issue.

Also, for those that complain about cords getting wrapped around their neck, if you feed the cord up over the top of your pillow, then tuck it under, it eliminates that issue. Will include a pic of that.

Good Product, check out my review for differences and expectations
by AlmostEverything84,Top Contributor: Camping (4 out of 5 stars)

Likes:
* Exceptionally comfortable/no problem lying on my side on a pillow or on my back. For sizing purposes I ordered a medium, I took a quick measurement of my head and it is approximately 21 ¼ inches
* Works as advertised, sound is clear
* The wire material looks to be nylon
* The fact that everything is removable and the headband can be washed

Concerns:
* The first thing you should know is this is not the identical packaging as the manufacturer's website. This almost seems like an Amazon exclusive package... for cheaper though. With this package you don't get the lavender sachet or the music CD. Instead you get a little card/coupon that if you go to sleep phones.com or run phones.com and spend $50 you can get the lavender sachet for free... You can download the music for free.
* There is a weird notice that's in my pictures below that comes within the packaging. It seems that due to the special wicking properties of this black fabric you have to make a mixture of white vinegar, water, and salt.... And let it soak for five minutes and then stick it in the washing machine prior to wearing. Also on the note they provide a video link with instructions that is a broken link?? I tried from multiple devices and Google says it's not valid.
* Also because of the packaging differences..... The videos provided on YouTube and their own website does not match what you receive. For instance, the colors of the left and right headphone assembly are not the same and they do not have the "hole" they refer to when uninstalling and installing the unit back into the headband. Honestly, it's not that hard to figure out but for someone that might not visually understand it can be difficult.

Overall:

You know... I am happy with the purchase. There is a savings of at least $15 from ordering through Amazon and the CD/lavender sachet is not a big deal in my eyes. However, I still think that should be explained under description. Looking at the actual product... It's not the highest quality headphone system so I just hope it lasts for at least a couple years. I can see maybe the wires pulling out especially if you shift your head a lot at night or something to that effect. The thing that really threw me off was that this product was not ready to use out-of-the-box... I had to take the time to make that mixture because they used a weird dye (probably from China) that had to be basically cured and washed. So I chop a star off right for that... Ultimately, I think you will be happy with this product as its genuine purpose is to be a comfortable therapeutic tool to help you sleep better. In my opinion, it does accomplish that... Just know what's coming in the package and that it comes in various sizes. I hope this review helps you make your decision.

Silly concept, totally indispensable.

I asked for these for Christmas last year and everybody made fun of me. Now they've all gone and bought a pair. These things are the best ever - and definitely better than earplugs and an eye mask! I put on binaural beats and pull the headband down over my eyes and sleep like the dead all night. Can't hear the annoying neighbors partying, spouse snoring, the rattling heater, nothing. Almost missed a meeting the first time I used it because I was so completely zonked! Great for travel, too. Hotel room is on the 3rd floor right over a busy street? SleepPhones to the rescue!

That said, it's impossible to make high quality headphones this thin so don't expect them to be Sennheiser or Bose quality, and they don't fully seal over your ears like noise-canceling headphones, so some environmental noise can get through. They're for listening quietly, and for sleeping - not for deeply enjoying high dynamic range recordings or booty-shaking bass. The headband is generously sized - I have a pretty big head and a medium works just fine either over my forehead as designed or over my eyes as combination headphones/eye mask.

Seem silly, but really, kudos to whoever thought these up.

Able to sleep with my snoring husband!
by Taylor Hegwood (5 out of 5 stars)
December 20, 2017

These are the best! We had tried and tried so many different products to help him stop snoring. All of them failed. We did the snore lab sleep test and he got "epic" results. This was very disheartening for me because I am an extremely light sleeper and options were running out. Sleeping in separate bedrooms was always there in the back of our minds but it was important for us to sleep in the same bed- just our own personal preference. Then one day I thought- if I could just put my head in a sound proof box- all would be great! And that thought made my wheels begin to turn. So I got out my computer and did some research! This is how I found these headphones and the Hearos Extreme Protection ear plugs. (I am going to try to link them to this post). I nervously awaited their arrival and was NOT disappointed when they showed up! I trimmed the earplugs so they were flush with my ears, downloaded the White Noise app (I like the brown noise sound), set everything up, and anxiously waited to fall asleep next to my sweet husband. And YALL! IT WORKED!!!! I didn't hear a peep from him! Not a sound! I still think there is magic somehow involved and I am shockingly okay with it. Because I am able to sleep right next to my epically snoring husband and not hear a sound from him! I was amazed and still am every night! I have been using this combo every night for about 2 months and it has been wonderful. It took no time to adjust to which was shocking for me because I didn't think I would be able to sleep with all of it on my head. But I do- every night- with no problem. They are extremely comfortable!! This has been such a relief for me and such an exciting discovery bc I have been around snorers my whole life, struggling to sleep. I do think that I will purchase the bluetooth set at some point so I don't have to worry about the cord. But it's not really in the way right now so I am okay with waiting. I hope this review helps somehow with a snoring spouse and gives them hope. Because it is an answered prayer for us! Hearos Xtreme Protection Series Ear Plugs 14-Pair

They are comfortable, though
by Götterdämmerung (4 out of 5 stars)

I have bought a few pairs of these over the past few years. I mostly use mine for white noise when traveling (they also can double as eye shades to block out that pesky sunlight, if you are staying somewhere without blackout curtains). The sound quality is, well... they're a bit muffled, unsurprisingly. But you aren't going to use these for critical listening. They are comfortable, though, and they seem to stand up pretty well if well cared for.

Note that I said "if well cared for". If not well cared for, they definitely have a limited lifespan, and the failure mode I've witnessed seems like a solvable problem that I hope they address. My wife wears hers every night. She also has a habit of going to bed with wet, or at least damp, hair. I don't know how she stands it, but here we are. Anyway, the cables on her pairs rapidly stiffen, until they become inflexible, eventually brittle, and then break (though the braided coating generally stays intact). I'm not sure if it's the water, latent shampoo/conditioner, or skin oils, but at least for her, this deterioration seems to be well under way within weeks of getting a new pair. I've never had this problem, but I have short hair (and less and less of it each year...) which I can easily dry thoroughly, and I don't wear them as often. Anyway, I suspect this problem is solvable (eg, teflon insulation, perhaps?), though perhaps it is not solvable at a reasonable price point. I'd love not to have to routinely throw these away and get new ones.

Love the speakers, made my own improved headband
by LMH (4 out of 5 stars)
March 8, 2017

I love these speakers and use them every night. I hated the headband, though, so I made my own.

The original headband was much too tight, was stiff and uncomfortable, and the way it's shaped, it slips down over your eyes. I didn't like that. I realized that the speakers themselves remove from the headband for washing, so I examined how it was made and threw together a headband of my own in minutes, by cutting a long rectangle out of polar fleece, joining the ends so it formed a circle, then folding lengthwise and sewing up one side. I then cut a slot to put the speakers in at the top. I made mine very loose (measured my own head and added a few inches) so it slipped on and off easily and left no dent in my hair.

After I used that awhile, I realized it would work even better if it wasn't a band, so I made a second one by just cutting a long rectangle out of polar fleece, folding it lengthwise and sewing together at the edge. I left the ends open and unattached to each other- this makes it easier to reach in and pull the speakers through and adjust their placement. I cut a slot in the top side at the middle to insert the speakers. (I sewed a bit of velcro there so they don't pull out.) This way, I can lay my head on one speaker then reach up and bring the other side around and set it on my other ear. It is so much more comfortable. Also a lot of times I don't use the bottom speaker because it can be kind of uncomfortable to lay on, I just put the top one over my ear. I don't toss and turn a lot and it stays put just fine for me.

The speakers themselves are not super high grade but they're fine. I listen to podcasts and audio books and they work great for that.

The cord is very durable and seems like it will last a long time. I will definitely replace these again when they finally do wear out!

I love them and now I can sleep
by Stormy Cea (5 out of 5 stars)
January 18, 2019

My husbands snoring was literally driving me insane. I tried listening to headphones, but I sleep on my side, so it was really painful and I could only use one side and it wasnt enough. So I was researching if there was some kind of headphones you could sleep with (comfortably). After a while, I decided these were most suitable. They work for me. Thank God. The band is slightly too big, but not so big I cant use them. I would say if head things fit you slightly loose, get the smaller one. It's a little tricky adjusting gf he earphone parts at first, but you get the hang of it eventually. Obviously they dont cancel out noise, since the just lay over your ears. So when my husband is snoring particularly loud, I can still hear him. On those occasions I just put foam earplugs in and then the headphones and it helps. I can still hear my music (quietly) but not his snoring. I cant feel the headphones, luckily. I saw some people saying they could. But I do have this weird pillow my chiropractor gave me that has a dent in the middle for your head, so that might be why. Either way they dont bother me. Also, I always sleep with an eye mask on, so having the headband around my head while I sleep doesnt bother me either. As others said, I just keep the cord going up towards the top of my bed, and I dont get tangled in it. And I toss and turn a bunch, so that was something I was initially concerned about. I haven't had them all that long, just a little over a month, but I haven't noticed any wear or tear. The sound quality is what youd expect for the price, so I'm not disappointed with that aspect. Honestly, I cant complain. I use them pretty much every night and I think I'd have gone crazy already without them. I would definitely recommend them.

Convenient, but Not Truly Comfortable
by hm3 (3 out of 5 stars)
February 6, 2017

I've been using these a little over a year, now. While truly convenient,I believe some further development is gonna be necessary before these things reach any level of quality and true comfort.

Comfort: Descriptions that you "can't feel" the speakers aren't accurate. You most certainly can feel the speakers through the fabric when laying on your side. Furthermore, the construction is such that there is a slit in the back through which you can remove/install the speakers for easy cleaning of the band. Unfortunately, the slit is sealed with velcro. Velcro isn't comfortable, folks ... and it tears things up. That velcro also creates a bulge which is uncomfortable on the back of your head. So, lying down with your ear facing the pillow, the speaker generates discomfort; lying down such that you're facing up, the velcro and bulge generate discomfort to the back of your head. I suppose you could try sleeping face-down =)

Longevity: As I previously mentioned, the velcro on the headband is uncomfortable, but also destructive. As you remove the speakers for cleaning, the velcro does ever more damage to the surrounding area. Though the sewing appears to be sound, and actually quite thorough (uncommon, these days), the velcro is slowly tearing away at the edges where it meets the cloth around the slit.

Overall, the SleepPhones have provided me with the convenience I was looking for, and still require, but the discomfort and hassle are certainly notable, though obviously not enough such that I stopped using them. I'm personally still looking for a more comfortable product, and hope that AcousticSheep can further develop this product to become more comfortable.

Angry ASMR Listener
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)
July 9, 2016

As an avid listener of ASMR videos (as in I can't even fall asleep without one playing now), I thought I absolutely needed these.

Such a waste of money.

I found them extremely hot and uncomfortable, and wouldn't want to wear them while jogging much less sleeping.

As well, within TWO WEEKS the left bud quit working. This was after only a few attempts to use them. Not a very sturdy product at all.

Also found it extremely annoying to position the buds in the band.

I'd honestly rather stick to just cheap plastic ear buds - they are way more comfortable than this, and have much better SOUND.

nice idea, poorly done
by mark Olsen (2 out of 5 stars)
August 7, 2019

I liked the idea; flat, adjustable, washable. But the product did not meet my needs.
1. Flat. They did that well
2. Adjustable - the speakers/earphones were just folded up inside the band. to adjust it, I had to push, pull and maneuver the speaker further away from each other inside the band..
3. Washable. I guess one you wiggled the headphones out of the tube style headband, you could wash the band
4. Cord. Actually a nice wove-wound cord. Two things though. a.) VERY short b.) no inline volume control.
5. Wearing it- it was hot to wear
6. After 4 uses, the left side stopped working. Wiggling it helped for 1/2 a night, but it was clearly gone
7. Price--- way way to high for what you get. If all the other things had been better, I might have sucked it up, but dying after 4 uses---- It went back
