Inconsistent

I bought a 10-pack of these a few years ago for emergency use and they were fantastic, so when they ran out I immediately ordered more. The second pack was terrible; I tried three different sticks and none of them gave out enough light to be useful. I had one stick left over from my first order so I lit it to compare with one of the new ones, see the attached pictures. Both of these sticks were cracked within minutes of each other, and the pictures were taken about 15 minutes after opening the packages.

I'm going to give Cyalume the benefit of the doubt and assume I got a bad lot, but this is still unacceptable for an emergency product. I'm glad I found this out before I had to rely on one of these.

Does it's job as advertised!
by MD (5 out of 5 stars)

I also was led to these, through reviews, but found some reviews that seemed contradictory, some saying the lights lasted, other saying they were dim and did not last. Had to find out for myself! Ordered these and test fired a few, and found that they light up bright, and stay lit.

Obviously, they are not nearly as bright at hour 12 as they are the first moment you crack it open, and it's unrealistic to expect such. As one reviewer said, and gave me a great laugh, these are not meant for landing aircraft ahahaha.

So, yup, lights up bright, and I'd say it stayed at that initial brightness for a number of hours. I didn't really notice it start to fade for a few hours, and then it was a slight fading to where it was more like a dim flashlight as it neared its end.

As a testament to this brand, after the successful test firing of these new ones, I was putting a handful in my car, and I found one in my trunk that I'd long forgotten, that had been in a box of car tools that I'd passed from car to car that I've owned over the years -- meaning the light stick was at least eight plus years old. Cracked it open, fired it up, and it remained lit until the next morning.

My summary: Highly recommend!!!

Bright after 12 hours, usable glow after 26 hours! See photos.
by Dave Taylor (5 out of 5 stars)

Wow. These have far exceeded specifications. See pictures - still emitting useful glow after 26 hours since activation. Photos are at 26 hour point; at 12 hours it was plenty bright. At 26 hours there was enough light to dIscern pictures and read fine text. Sure, it is fading but, c'mon - 26 hours and it is rated for 12? That's just crazy good.

Important: Stick was at room temp (about 75F) entire time; there was NO artificial chilling (e.g., refrig/freezer) or dip in temp (e.g., outdoors --> a cooler night) to prolong chemical reaction. Lowering the temp is a "trick" that can be used to extend life of light. This was not done.

Sympathy note: I truly feel sorry for the people who wrote one star reviews because the sticks they received seem to have expired and faded quickly. I believe you, I do. What a tragedy if a person went to use (and rely on) one of these in a dire emergency, only to find it fades to zero after 90 minutes or so. That is criminal.

Because of those one star reviews I tested one of the ten in my batch. It glowed right away, was "bright" (as bright as a glow stick can be, I guess!) and was strong at 12 hours. I wanted to vouch for this product and also thank the "bad batch" reviewers who prompted me to test these BEFORE an emergency. I'm so sorry yours were the rare sticks that were no good.

Dimmer than dollar store glow stick.

After cracking one as a test, I was unimpressed with the brightness. I remembered that I had a 4-5 year old bargain bin glow sticks in one of my medical kits and I grabbed it to do a comparison. The off brand budget stick was at least twice as bright. Very disappointed in what I thought was a brand that could be trusted.

Worked very well during a recent blackout
by Julie Chamberlain (4 out of 5 stars)

Our area had a power outage after a major wind storm that lasted 3 days for us, and has lasted 5 days for others in our area. While watching the forecasts I ordered these and had them over nighted to me 'just in case'. I'm glad I did. We lost power in our home. We had other sources of light, but we gave a glow stick to each of our children, and put one in an empty milk jug to use as a lantern. I ordered 3 more packages of these to put into our cars, bug out/in bags, and I'm keeping the rest in our emergency box.

My only complaint is, I wish these were a tad bit brighter, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. But hey...if the power goes out I have a lot more to worry about than a glow stick not being brighter.

Tip: If you're going to use a glow stick as a lantern - use a white but opaque milk jug. Just drop the lit stick into the milk jug and screw the cap back on, and don't add any additional water or anything to diffuse the light (that doesn't work - it just made the light dimmer).

Product test, compare and disappointment.

I ordered the 20 pack. I was drawn to both the price and that they are made in USA. A week prior, I purchased a 12 pack of Glow Mind safety light stick. (Made in China) I decided to do a comparison test between the two. Here is what I found with a side by side test. The Glow Mind is a bright green color and the Cyalume Snaplight in more of a yellow green color. The Glow Mind is brighter and also has about a 1/4 more fluid than the Cyalume which adds to their brightness. They both lasted through the night. As I look at them now, about 18 hours later, I would expect them to be dead. The Cyalume is barely alive but surprisingly, the Glow Mind still glows with a decent amount of light. I'm sad to say but my next light stick purchase will be Glow Mind, not Cyalume.

Bright, long-lasting, and a good value
by KOB (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought these as a non-battery powered, non-sparking, water-proof emergency light source for adding to black-out kits I made for relatives. For most circumstances, this isn't a good alternative to a decent LED flashlight, but if you need something that can be taken into the shower, carried in the rain, or used near a suspected gas leak, this is a great option.

Something happened in the non-mil-spec glow stick market in the past year and if you get these in decent quantity, they're about on price point with glow-sticks for kids that aren't nearly as bright and don't last as long. Since they're disposable and there's a lot of plastic, I'd feel pretty bad using them regularly, but they're solid emergency gear.

They are super bright at first
by Tom The Man! (4 out of 5 stars)
May 31, 2016

They are super bright at first. I did not time them to see how long they last, nor did I do a base line test of one in and one out of the pool. Which brings me to my point. I bought them to use in the pool vs installing actual lights. I have a 4' x 16' pool and one lit the entire pool quite well for the first 15 minutes or so. After about 15 minutes, they began to fade. Not too much, but fade none the less. My pool was pretty chilly (72) at the time I tried them, and the cool water may have been a contributing or even the only factor for why they began to fade. Not sure since I didn't test one outside the pool at the same time. Anyway, they're exactly like what I grew up with and was very impressed with the brightness and material used. I have virtually no complaint and am hopeful that as my pool warms up, the lights will stay bright much longer than when it was cool. Cheers!

Great product!

It's been almost 9 months since we purchased the snap lights and we finally got a chance to use them last night. During an electrical storm, our power was knocked out at around 10pm. We have a three story house, so I placed 1-stick at the bottom of each staircase. 12-hours later both sticks are still glowing bright enough to light up the floor in daylight. I'm grateful to see that the product claims made by Cyalume were kept. The Snaplight gets the job done. Photo attached.

Green Calume Light Sticks
by Divineshadow, Plymouth, WI (5 out of 5 stars)
July 16, 2016

Bought these "snap" light sticks to mark our campsite post at night for taking unexpected trips in the middle of the night to the latrine, showering and marking nite time danger zones like guide lines from tents, rocks and uneven ground on our site. They are advertised as 12 hour, but they stayed illuminated for 72 hours but gradually not as bright as the first night. (I think this was because we had a full shade site, and the sun didn't degrade the chemical inside the stick) Still glowing on the last nite. Great for making a kid friendly glo-lantern . Always a family camp favorite!
