Excellent pond floater. Not meant to deter wild birds.
by R. Wise,Top Contributor: Star Wars (5 out of 5 stars)
March 9, 2018

I bought this decoy head as part of an April Fool's prank at a neighbourhood pond near our house. With exceptions to the eyes, the head looks very realistic. I peeled off the red decals for the eyes and painted more "real" looking eyes. The paint finish is accurate and durable as its been oversprayed with a gloss coat sealer. The underside is concave so when it sits in the water there's a slight suction effect that keeps it from flipping over. A small eyelet can also be found underneath. Easy to tie a weight to the decoy to prevent it from floating around the pond. Excellent product.

Update: Since I purchased this head, the supplier has changed the product description to say that this head is meant for Canada Geese and Heron control. At the time of my purchase it did not. On the manufacturer's website it doesn't claim to be a deterrent to wild birds. It's just described as a "floater". I agree with this. Why does the Amazon item descripe it is a deterrent? The negative reviews for this head state that it doesn't work. I dropped this head not the local pond that ducks frequent. The ducks don't mind it at all. Probably because they've never seen an alligator before so they're not afraid of it. Anyways, don't buy it to scare away wild birds. There are other decoy alligators available on Amazon that look much more fearsome.

Works in the never-ending battle against hungry herons
by Cigarman (5 out of 5 stars)

The herons have made meals of my koi for awhile. I have a motion sensitive sprayer but that didn't always do the job since sometimes the sensitivity was not working as it should. Ever since I put this in the pond I have had no problems losing fish. It's kinda fun and a good conversation piece but it does the job as long as it can move around the pond and the koi don't seem to mind. One thing though - high winds will flip it -- sometimes out of the pond. So after thunderstorms or wind events, you should check on it. Minor quibble. For me it works.

Realistic!
by Tanner (5 out of 5 stars)

This thing looks so real!!! I'm not going to lie, I got this to prank people on the river. The red eyes are stickers that can be taken off of you would like. That being said, they are good enough quality that they won't fall off if you like them. It has an anchor hook on the bottom of the alligator head. It is a good quality product and will be causing a lot of laughs 😂

The eylet (where the string attaches) RUSTED and FELL OFF in 4 months
by Steve Hansen (2 out of 5 stars)

The foam part is ok. The iguana lizards stay away. We had the alligator tethered by a string to a piece of concrete, to keep it in one area of the pool. The eyelet on the bottom where the string attaches, was made of plain steel. Not stainless. Not brass. Not even galvanized. Just plain steel. It rusted completely away in only 4 months. We noticed when we saw the alligator at the wrong end of the pool. For the price of this thing, that part should be stainless, or gold.

Poor Quality
by Darin P. (1 out of 5 stars)

I would not recommend this product. The "red eyes" of the Alligator are nothing more than cheap, thin stickers that will not last more than a week in a wet environment. In addition, when the product arrived the "eye stickers" were half way off already. In addition, the hook on the underside of the "decoy" that is supposed to be used to anchor product when in water, is very small and will pull out of the underside in no time at all. Overall, not worth the money and cheaply made at best.

Crocky
by The Green Phantasm (4 out of 5 stars)
July 15, 2012

A small crocodile head now reposes in our 35-foot koi pond, drifting several feet upstream from a fake blue heron. Neither is facing the other. The croc's head is placed so that its body seems to be hidden under lily pads. To me, 'cept for the red eyes (which may be effective--who knows?) it's a pretty realistic-looking imitation. It's lightweight and probably easily damaged, but floating there in the pond looks safe enough from harm.

Even if it was a tad pricy, I've come to like it. Since putting it into the water three weeks ago, my wife and I haven't seen a blue heron or egret land near the pond--though we have seen them flying overhead. Admittedly, it's a bit early to judge, but I'm inferring (or at least hoping!) that at least for now, either the croc or the heron (which is far less realistic)--or both together--may just be the cause of the predator birds' staying away. Oh, I do move the croc & heron occasionally.

We should gain more certainty about their effectiveness after a few months. Meanwhile, we're all keeping our fins crossed! Pax, fishies. . .

Crocodile Dundee...watch your back
by Joyrags (5 out of 5 stars)
July 12, 2012

We ordered this to keep the herons out of our very shallow pond (sushi bar to them). Desperate to find something other than me running out waving my hands and shouting like a crazy person (that did work, but the neighbors laughter was humiliating). When this arrived, wasn't sure, not only does it look realistic and we love the comments we get from the same neighbors, but we think it follows us around the pond ;) We are pleased with it and it seemed to be working until we found ourselves in a drought (Wisconsin) and the herons are going wherever there is still water, frogs and fish. Back to running outside waving my hands and shouting ... hmmm, kind of like a Packers' fan :) We would recommend this to anyone who hopes to keep unwanted critters at bay. It's realistic looking, floats well and a topic of great conversation... worth a try in our opinion.

Very real looking alligator head
by BorisN (5 out of 5 stars)
June 5, 2013

I bought this to scare away ducks that land in my pool from time to time. The alligator head looks very real and is well made. Overall, I am pleased to have purchased such a nice quality item.

My guess is that is a pond or any other non-pool body of water, this thing will work wonders. However, if you are buying this for a pool, please consider the following:
1) Without a weight to hold it in place (for which there is a convenient hook on the bottom), the alligator head gets sucked into my skimmers within about 30 min.
2) If I add a weight (whether floating or on the bottom of the pool), it gets tangled with my Polaris vacuum.

Thus, while perhaps there is a better solution that I have not yet figured out, for now, it is just sitting on my pool deck and looking very real and scary from there.

The alligators paint is coming off!
by lula (1 out of 5 stars)
August 10, 2013

I previously gave this product a good review but since then I have noticed that the paint is coming off in several places. I touched one spot and more rubbed off. It's only been in my pond a month since it is made to be in a pond and outside I can no longer recommend it. I did love how great and realistic it looked, but know I don't know how long it will last. For the money I spent I expected it to last. When I received it one of the eye stickers was peeling back so I stuck a pin in it to hold it down, so far so good. Also for the past month I have not seen a single Heron until yesterday in the rain there was a heron standing on the side of the pond with its head bent over looking at the gator.

Got "Him" Right At Home:
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)
April 23, 2019

I got this decoy to "float around" on my apartment's front porch area. Since it rains heavy here and that area floods. "He" is right at home, however, "Down On The Bayou." As other comments notes, the red-eye stickers don't do much for it. I removed those and the green eyes do just fine.
