Big Box Of Ladybugs | ||||||||

Product Description
A favorite "good bug," ladybugs have been a popular beneficial insects for the past 20 years. When released at sundown (because they don't fly at night), ladybugs eat aphids, mealy bugs, scale, leaf hoppers, and other destructive pests. And they keep on eating until the bad guys are gone, laying their own eggs in the process. When new pests arrive, fresh ladybugs will be waiting. You will love them because ladybugs really work, plus they will be doing something favorable for the environment. LADYBUGS (Hippodamia convergens)USE: Ladybugs prefer to eat aphids and will devour up to 50 a day, but they will also attack scale, mealy bugs, boil worm, leaf hopper, and corn ear worm.
Spray the foliage in the area of the ladybug release with Hirt's Natures Nectar, shortly before releasing the ladybugs.
Ladybug Nectar is a specially formulized nutritional supplement. This nutrient rich food successfully substitutes for many of the nutrients found in natural nectars, pollen, and honeydew (aphid waste). It is the best replacement food when a natural food supply is lacking, and stimulates egg production in ladybugs, lacewings, and other beneficial insects. It also helps encourage and maintain a continuous local beneficial insect population in your yard, garden or greenhouse.

OMG!!! This was s great experience! I was a bit nervous to order because others had written reviews about many lady bugs being dead in arrival. There was NOT ONE dead ladybug!!!!!!!! That's pretty impressive!
The instructions were great! I followed them exactly. The ladybugs did not fly away because I sprayed they with a sugar water solution.
It was a really fascinating experience to release them and I shared it with my 5 year old neighbor.
Disappointed

I did exactly as instructed and within a few days they were all gone. I'm not seeing any more lady bugs then I did before I used it. The hope is that they will mate in your garden and leave eggs and you will have future lady bugs in your garden, however I'm not seeing that either. I continued to have aphid problems and despite the food source they left and the aphids stayed. However my rating of its OK is because I think it is good to do it for the environment but I as far as pest issues, I did not have much direct benefit from releasing them. Quite a bit of them were dead when they arrived though...maybe 25 percent if I had to guess. Also, I ordered 4500 but I don't think there was any where near that amount in the bags I received.
No way to release at intervals, too many to be released at once.

There were a ton of ladybugs. It was recommended to release them at night (as they don't fly at night) and reclose the bag and put in refrigerator for later but there was no way to reseal the bag and I didn't want ladybugs all over my fridge so I basically had to release all the ladybugs at once which was WAY too many at one time. The bag was supposed to contain 1500 ladybugs and it seemed like there was a lot but about 1/4 of the were dead. They did seem to like my aphid ridden plant but within a week hardly any were left so they either flew away, died, or were eaten by birds. The plants that they were "hired" to clean off were substantially better but not fully cleared of aphids which seemed impossible with the amount of ladybugs in the bag. I would do it again but would buy less bugs and figure out a way to reseal the bag so I wouldn't have to release them all at once.
They always fix any bug pro lems

I have bought ladybugs from them in the past with no problems but this time I was concerned because the post office delivered and with no instructions they left the box in my hot mailbox for an unknown length of time
I was not sure they were even alive. In the past they were very active
Because of my sight issues I was not even sure they were alive. Usually you hold the pack up and you can see them moving around. But after several sprays of water and as night started to fall they started moving around. more so I released them.
Not the best choice nor value

I may have ordered & paid for 4,500 lady bugs but probably only 50 actually arrived. I put them into the aphid laden garden in the quiet time of the evening and the next morning if I had 15 left I would have been amazed. I'm sorry but I still have the aphids and no lady bugs anywhere in my raised bed garden and my poor cucumber plant is being eaten alive as we speak. The zuccini plant is still also full of aphids and the ants hafe taken over the plant. I don't think that this was a good value. Not Hirt's fault, but I do think that out of 4500 lady bugs only having 50 survive is definitely not a good value. I'm sorry to have to have said this but it's true.
These guys (or gals) are AWESOME!!

I got these creatures (plus some lacewing eggs) because something was eating my poor little plants. I dumped them out late at night and they immediately found homes on various leaves, grasses, trees, etc. The next day we had ladybugs wandering all over the garden, the yard, and spilling into the neighbor's yard. I didn't mind that they were "getting away" because I figured that if they cleaned up the neighbors yards as well as mine then all of us would be happy. Well worth the investment. It has been several weeks and we have gone from 'not a ladybug in sight' to 'ladybugs, ladybugs, everywhere!' I even brought a few in to protect my indoor plants that also seemed to be under attack. I highly recommend these bugs if you want to try non-chemical plant protection. Make sure you follow the instructions - they are very clear and very easy to follow - and you will be fine. One word of caution - if your mail gets delivered in a sunny spot and you are not able to pick up your mail as soon as it's delivered that day, either ask someone to get it for you or make arrangements with your Post Office Person to place it in a shady spot or hold it at the main office. The ladybugs do not handle high heat well, so sitting in the sunshine, in a box, is very much like leaving a dog in a locked car -- DON'T DO IT!!! I wonder if people who have had problems may have been victims of accidental over-exposure to heat? Ours came right from teh Post Officer to the indoor, took a rest on the basement floor, then slept in the fridge until night time. Perfect! I will definitely get more of them next year.
Very happy!

Aside from the fact that my mailman squashed the box, I was very please with the order. Most of the ladybugs arrived alive, there was a fair number of dead, but that is just what happens. (every shipment of ladybugs I have ordered from a variety of companies will have a number of dead bugs in it...it's just how it is) I would say only about 1/4 at most where dead, so a bit better than average. They were released yesterday, and in a few hours had stripped my plants clear of aphids. There are still a lot hanging out today, but most have moved on. I'm hopeful that this will be the final boost we need to keep our population up and keeping the aphids clear. If not, I'll be coming back to this seller to order more in the spring.
Great way to stop an onslaught in its tracks.

The stars had aligned, just the right moisture, just the right temperatures, and my garden was suddenly under attack. I've avoided insecticides for years, I didn't want to start now. The lady bugs pretty much all flew away, but not until the enemy was decimated. Hopefully the lady bugs laid some eggs and I'll see more than usual in the future, but even if I don't, it was worth it. They probably helped reduce the whole neighborhhod's population of pests!
Fast shipping, bugs don't stay.

Shipping was faster than expected. Followed instructions to a t, still had quite a few dead lady bugs. All in all, I think maybe 10 lady bugs have stayed behind, and we have enough for them to eat and live on. This is mainly my fault though, why would a bunch of bugs live where I want them to?
Gross exaggeration on quantiy.

I am done ordering garden critters off amazon. First I get ripped off on earthworms, and now the lady bugs.
Quite simply put, there is no chance in hell there were 4500 lady bugs in the bag received. You may ask "how does one count 4500 lady bugs?" You don't, but you can easily estimate, that's what nerdy engineers like myself are good at. I laid the bag down flat, and counted a ball park figure for 1 square inch. I then multiply that by the foot print of the bag. I repeated this count a few times and then averaged my numbers. I find it extremely hard to believe there were more than 1000-1500 lady bugs in this bag.
This company sells different quantities of lady bugs. I wouldn't be surprised if the the 1000 2000 3000 4500 orders all received the same damn sized bag, no matter what quantity they ordered.
These lady bugs arrived very healthy, I think there were only two or three dead, that is the only reason they get 2 stars instead of 1.
Regardless I would caution against ordering from this company, or if you do decide to do so, order a small quantity.
