Product Description

The pen is mightier than the mouse. At least for those of you who prefer the wrap-and-grip of your hand on the former to the lay-and-cup of it on the latter. So too might you like Penclic's assimilation of pen and mouse... [Read more]

Great Idea, But Didn't Work For Me
by sharon (3 out of 5 stars)

After reading about this mouse and viewing a youtube promotional video, I ordered one. The most difficult thing about trying the Penclic was getting it out of its packaging. Once I got past that hurdle, actually setting it up was a snap. The Penclic seems to be a great idea, but the placement of the scroll wheel made it difficult for me to reach. I also had a bit of trouble using a fluid motion to click the upper buttons. My hands are quite small, so it's possible this device will work great for someone with larger hands. I was hoping the Penclic would provide greater accuracy for doing photo edits without using a graphics pen tablet, but it wasn't to be, at least for me.

Terrible

I've own this mouse for about 1 month. The left click button is dead. The quality is really bad. How awesome is that?

I believe I have a lemon

Agree about the difficult (yet snazzy) packaging! Unfortunately, no matter what I do, I get no power and therefore no "mouse". Tried it on 2 computers with same results. Tried alkaline batteries instead of the rechargeable it came with - same thing. Tried charging the battery for hours - same thing. Appears to be a dud and so I'll end up returning it and will write another review if/when I get another one.

Not for me
by Cthulhu (3 out of 5 stars)

I received a Penclic mouse as a 'for review' unit but I never promise a 'good' review in return and none was asked by the vendor.

My review package came with a note that encouraged me to try the 'mouse' for a while before deciding whether I liked it or not because it would take some getting used to it, so try I did and here are my impressions.

After some 3 weeks of using Penclic's mouse on and off, I couldn't actually get used to it. The 'pencil grip' is not comfortable for me because it doesn't allow my hand to rest the way it does on a 'normal' mouse when not in use. In addition, the scroll wheel is not easy to operate with the middle finger or the ring finger while the thumb and index are holding the pen-like body.

The mouse is 'usable', in the sense that you can click and scroll and highlight but there are quite a few limitations. The scroll wheel, for example, is not clickable, the 2 side buttons I am still not sure what they may be for and, to my disappointment, there is no software that would allow me to actually assign functions to specific buttons.

Of course, there are some good things to say about the product. It's battery operated and it comes with a rechargeable battery and a USB charging cord. The auto-off feature works well, preserving battery life on one charge and the mouse is quite responsive.

On balance, Penclic's mouse is worth trying by anyone who can't stand a regular one and would feel better if the mouse could be held like a pen. Anyone's who's happy with the way their mouse works aren't going to like it or prefer it. The product could be made better if it came with some button allocation software and a better placement was found for the scroll wheel.

It gets three stars not within the frame of reference where regular mice are factored in but viewed as a mouse-like product used by someone who is not comfortable with a regular mouse and seeks an alternative.

Penclic Wireless Mouse R2 is a different type of mouse.

Penclic Wireless Mouse R2 is a different type of mouse. It is designed by its Swedish makers to encourage you to use the Penclic pen mouse, in a much more relaxed natural working position, thus reducing the strain on your wrist. This novel ergonomic design makes it ideal for reducing the possibility of Repetitive Strain Injury. It comes in two colours, black or white and consists of a control stick, shaped like a pen, connected to a small mouse.

The base contains all that you expect from a mouse to track your movements around your desk as well, as a place to insert a battery. Also on the mouse is a scroll wheel which allows you to move up and down a page on your screen, together with an on-off switch.

However, there are five distinct buttons on the pen: Left Click, Right Click, and Middle Click are on the right side of the pen, while the Backwards and Forwards click buttons are on the left side of the pen. The backwards and forwards buttons can be used for Internet surfing.

As to how to use the Penclic Wireless Mouse R2, hold the top section of the mouse like you would hold a pen. Allow your forearm and hand to rest on your working surface, whilst keeping your shoulders relaxed. The bottom part of Penclic Wireless Mouse R2 acts like a traditional mouse. Then once you have the device in a comfortable and relaxed position on your work surface and only move your fingers. Imagine that you are a using a pen, and writing a letter to someone. This natural ergonomic movement is the basis of Penclic Mouse.

I must say it does take some getting used to, but once you learn where to position your hand and fingers, it's easy to use. I would certainly recommend this to my fellow journalists.

Has Potential, But Needs Customizability
by H. Chen (2 out of 5 stars)

The problem is with the button layout.

Basically the only button that is well placed is the left click. All other buttons, including scroll wheel, literally require awkward finger positions to use. Plus the mouse is very light-weight, so it's uneasy to be stable when clicking buttons/using scroll wheels with awkward maneuvers. For high-precision tasks, such as working inside a 3D animation and modeling software, this is really deadly. Practically, it is only great if all you ever use is the scroll wheel, left button, and side buttons (forward/back).

However, it'd be possibly more usable if I could switch functions of its side buttons with right/middle so that I could press them more naturally with my thumb, instead of using index finger to press all three (left/right/middle).

In the end, you might save your wrist by using this mouse, but you could instead over-strain fingers.

Love this! I've been so used to using a regular mouse for my day to day activities but this pen allows me such more freedom. I feel as if I accomplish more using this item than using a regular wired or even wireless mouse.
