Santa hung this up in my son's room while he slept, which was no easy task. Practically a scene from Mission: Impossible. The assembly is best done with two people - one to attach the wires together and hang planets, and another to hold pieces in place so nothing gets tangled. It can be done with just one person, but you'll need patience with it.
The first thing you should know is that this is not a toy for playing with, but a model for observation, learning, and just looking cool. The planets and the entire display itself is held up by very thin strands of string/thread. This is so they don't distract from the planets, making the string appear "invisible", and easily allowing you to imagine the planets floating in space rather than dangling. For similar effect, the metal wires are also thin, making it all too easy for things to bounce around.
The pamphlet doesn't give any instructions for hanging, so I thought I'd write something up to help out anyone without prior experience.
1. Pick up some hooks from your local hardware store - ones with a wood screw shaft. I chose the ones that are coated in rubber because the string is thin and a metal hook might (over time) break through it. Hooks are typically in the hardware section with all the other screws, nuts, and bolts. Chat with an employee if you have questions about this process.
2. Find a joist in the ceiling so the hook goes into wood and not just drywall. Then, drill a pilot hole into the joist using a drill bit with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw portion of the hook.
3. Hand-screw the hook into the pilot hole until the thread of the screw portion is no longer visible. If using the rubber coated hook, the metal portion won't be visible and the rubber portion will be touching the drywall above. DON'T overtighten. Give a gentle tug on the hook to ensure it bit the wood and the model won't come crashing down after you hang it.
4. Determine how far down you want the model to hang and unwind the thread from the white tag to match. Keep the excess thread on the white tag and do not remove it. It will help keep the thread in place while you tie the knots.
5. Double or triple knot the thread around the hook, sliding the white tag through the loops. Keep holding the model up while doing so as the thread will have a tendency to slide through the knot and the model will lower slowly. After your second or third knot, the model will stay in place. I recommend at least three knots. You can then hook the white tag with the excess thread onto the hook through the tag's hole. This let's you keep the excess thread without cutting it off in case you wanted to move it or lower it later.
4. Hang the planets according to the instructions. Your planet strings might have Venus labeled twice by mistake, with Earth missing. Refer to the instructions pamphlet as it tells you where Earth and Venus truly goes.
5. If the balance of one metal wire is off by a little bit, wrap a couple paperclips around a pen, remove the lighter weighted planet and place the paperclips on top so they're sitting around the planet's hook. Rehang the planet. Add more paperclips if necessary.
Beautiful Mobile

I purchased this for our second child's nursery, and I am so pleased with the model. It is large, but it fits very nicely in the 9' x 11' room without overtaking it. The planets are well made, it was very easy to put together - it took under 20 minutes, and I love how it gives dimension to the room without being too obtrusive in the space.
My only complaint is that it didn't come with a built-in mechanism for hanging. It comes with a very long string, and I haven't yet determined what is the best way to hang the model while preserving the length of string for future adjustments. This concern stems from experience with our first child and her mobile, which she promptly ripped down from the ceiling during nap time once she graduated to a big girl bed and discovered the joy of jumping. This was pure unforeseen error on our part, but we won't be fooled again!
I love it!!

This thing is absolutely beautiful!!! The pictures on the "planets" are so realistic, it was a job very well done making this thing. There's a few things I'd like to mention. It was a pain trying to put it together. The planets hang on hooks, so they can easily be bumped and knocked off their hooks. Also, which brings me to my next point, it is VERY LARGE for a mobile and hangs pretty low. I have it hanging in the corner of my home office, and I've bumped my head on it 3 times already, so this is why I know the planets come off their hooks easily. But neither of those things is worth taking it down a star! I am a huge space nut, and this is definitely one of the coolest things I own!
Would it be weird to have these in every room of the house! Love!

Love love love this! My husband and I are so jealous of 1 year, that we are tempted to keep it for ourselves. Haahaa. Much bigger than I imagined. But no complaints with this beautiful mobile.
Just a heads up, I wasn't impressed with the box this model came shipped in. It was two separate cardboard boxes taped together. So, I wasn't sure what to expect from the presentation. I was a little weary about putting it together, but the instructions were simple enough. Takes a little common sense and easier to do with a second set of hands holding up the main support string, while you attach the matching globes. Even so, we are Thrilled with it!!!
Looks like someone hand glued this model together with lots of attention and care. Much preferred to any ole mass produced, plastic, cheap mobile you can find at any large chain toy store. I would by this again any day!!!!
UPDATE:
2 years later and we still adore this mobile. So does our almost-3-year-old. Most mornings he asks us to pick him up so he can say hi to the planets. Calling each out by name. Also, we now have an 8 week old and are likely going to buy one fore her room.

After three months use it works flawlessly. I had some anxiety about spending this much on a planet model since my kids already had a cheap plastic one. Rarely do I put something together and my young children enjoy it longer than a week. This is the exception to that rule. The model itself is very high quality and somewhat heavy. Fairly easy to put together and I have no patience putting toys together. It's not very easy to hang yourself so I needed my wife's help but once it was up the kids (3 and 5) were just in awe of it. The planets orbit and don't get tangled up as they move. I have entered my daughters room and both of them are just staring at it and I can see their imaginations running wild. They both know all the planets now and ask questions about them - WOW. Sometimes you do get what you pay for and I can see this hanging in my daughter's room for a long time.

You can very clearly see lines going down each of the globes where the images are glued together. My husband is very unhappy that Jupiter's red spot is cut off half way and mostly distorted do to how it was glued together. I think it's worth the discounted price of $75 that we paid, however, I would have been unhappy had I paid full price.

My baby is Obsessed!!! With this mobile she could look at it for hours if we let her. I believe in parental attachment but sometimes when I need to wash dishes or do something in the house this is her favorite place to be looking at this amazing mobile she wakes up and she smiles at it! She has a mamaroo and toys and she gets bored pretty easy but when it come to this she NEVER gets tired. Everyone who sees this mobile compliments it. I have it in a little boys room but it is awesome and classy enough for any room or age of outer space enthusiast. The planets come with little label tags so its helpful in Learning planet names. Putting it up takes a little bit of care, but can be done by anyone who can read and use a ladder/step stool. The movements are soothing and enjoyable to watch. This is definitely one of the most fun pieces of decor in our home.

The paper gores are not glued onto the globes correctly and some gores are duplicated on a single globe so the images do not match up at the seams and/or are incomplete. This was very surprising for a product of this price that uses the words "authentic", "perfect", and "scientific" in the description. I didn't truly expect "perfect", and if at least the planet Earth had been correct, I might have been more forgiving of these issues on the sun and the other planets. Even my 4 year old grandson immediately noticed that the images on the planets were incorrect. I'm so disappointed because, otherwise, it would be a very beautiful mobile.
