Cute for Halloweenby Angela (5 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this cookie cutter to make cookies for a kindergarten class for Halloween, but I decided to do a practice run yesterday. I'm so glad that I did because I learned a few things about using this cookie cutter.
There are recipes included, and I used the one for gingerbread cookies. The resulting cookie was flavorful and tender, and retained it's shape after baking. I followed the directions, rolling a ball of dough between 2 sheets of parchment and freezing for half an hour before cutting. The dough was incredibly sticky and would have been impossible to roll out and cut without freezing first. Before cutting the frozen dough, generously flour both sides of the dough, and generously flour your cutter. Then cut out the gingerbread man shapes. Don't bother imprinting the skeleton shape prior to baking, because the dough puffs up a little bit, and you lose the depth of the bone shapes. Instead, bake as directed, and immediately stamp the bone shapes in when you take your cookies out of the oven, while the dough is still soft and warm. This method will give you nice, deep bone shapes to fill with royal icing.
I enjoyed using this cookie cutter. When used correctly, they produce an impressive cookie.
Great product!

I had a lot of fun making these, but I do have some tips. The instructions that come in the box are pretty good.
I did not roll out the dough before chilling, but that probably would have made things easier. I separated the dough into 2 batches after chilling, then rolled it out between parchment paper. I then peeled off the parchment, floured one side of the dough, flipped it, and floured the other side.
I used the gingerbread cookie recipe that came with the cutter, I found it to be very tasty and firm enough after being baked. It made about 12 cookies. I baked for the minimum time of 12 minutes and that was perfect. I baked the cookies on a cookie sheet with parchment paper and there was no sticking. I did make a thicker cookie, about 1/4 inch as they recommend. As others recommended, I poked a couple holes in the cutter before cutting out the gingerbread men. Without holes, it's hard to get your dough out from the cutter since it creates a vacuum. I just used the tip of a sharp knife and twisted it to create a couple holes. Worked fine after that.
Do not stamp the skeleton shape before baking, do it as soon as you take them out of the oven and they are still warm. You have to press pretty hard, but you will get a good impression. Let the cookies cool completely before icing them.
The icing was the hardest part for me. I used the Williams Sonoma Royal Icing Recipe (available online), definitely add the bit of vanilla extract, it gives it a good flavor. I had to thin the icing with a little water to get it to the consistency I wanted.
As far as icing the cookies, it took a few failed attempts to get it right. Finally I got my technique down and then it went quick. I piped icing in the indentations, then used a toothpick to get it right up to the edges. I couldn't pipe the icing around the very small details without covering them (nose and eyes especially), but using the toothpick to do the fine detailing worked well. I don't think the indentations are deep enough that you could make a very thin icing and just pour it in, so this was the best method I found. As you can see, mine turned out looking pretty close to the picture on the box.
These turned out great! And so much fun (I also got the Voodoo ones *See pic)

Loved these!
I'm well know for my old school gingerbread recipe, and its one of those things that I (until now) only got to pull out at Xmas.
But being that Halloween is my preferred holiday (it IS my xmas) I loved that I got an excuse to make "Gingerdead" men a bit earlier this year.
I gave these to friends and they were such a success. They are really fun.
One suggestion, these cutters will do MUCH better if you flour them between each pressing. Most imprint cutters are like this.
Have fun with these guys!

I really am useless when it comes to decorating anything (explains my glowing review of the gingerbread house mold) so I am certain the problem is ME!
I made shortbread dough, rolled it out and refrigerated it. Then I used the cutter portion to cut out the man shape, So far so good. I had some difficulty transferring the cookies to the baking sheet (an arm here, a leg there, fell off) but if I used a spatula to transfer them I suspect I would not have had the problem.
I waited about 10 minutes for the dough to soften before stamping the skeleton shape, as per suggestion on the box. When I did this the design came out but some of the dough stuck to the form (yest, I floured the press before and after each use). If the dough didn't stick, it was because it was too hard and the design didn't come out. As I said, I am hopeless when it comes to decorating and crafts so I take responsibility. Also, I had better luck with these than I have had with other items designed to make it easy for me to decorate cookies. I just can't give 5 stars when I wasn't a successful user.
Adorable Skeleton Army.

I made a skeleton cookie army with this cookie cutter this weekend. I stamped the bones first then cut them out for baking. They came out awesome. I did have to use a nail and hammer to put two holes in the cutter before using; my experience with stamped cookie cutters is that if you don't do this you will create a vacuum seal and it will be nearly impossible to get the cookie out of the cutter without damaging the stamp and cut.
Again, love it. Very cute design and the stamp was very easy to fill.

Took other reviewer's advice and drilled holes in the cutter first to ensure it could be removed from the dough easily--worked great! Followed instructions in the box and stamped dough first (firmly) and then cut the dough. I did roll the dough on parchment, removed excess and transferred the parchment to a cookie sheet for baking. Took patience to flow the royal icing through the small spaces!
Sweet Success!

I received this cookie cutter/stamper yesterday and could hardly wait to get my cookie dough chilled to use it. I was somewhat reluctant to purchase it after reading some of the negative reviews...HOWEVER, the cookies turned out nicely with a clear pattern. Hints:
#1 roll cookie dough thin less than 1/4 inch
#2 lightly press outline of cutter on dough
#3 push your stamp in from top to bottom and from side to side firmly but gently
#4 turn over to cutter side and cut out the cookie.
Important: Make sure to roll between 2 pieces of parchment paper- lightly flour your cookie cutter/stamp- choose an appropriate sugar cookie recipe that doesn't have baking soda (perhaps shortbread)
It's not that difficult, I had fun, I would order this product again. I am thrilled with the result and have done nothing but make cookies with the stamper from last night and early this morning. I also bought the Cursed Cookies Voodoo doll.
Fantastic cookie cutter!

Absolutely adorable cookie cutter. I read a lot of reviews that were upset that after cutting the cookie the stamper made the cookie deformed. Try stamping the dough first and then place the cutter over the stamp. Your stamp will be perfect. With a little practice you will cut them perfect every time. If your cutting is still off, try making tiny marks with a fork or knife near the stamped toes, hands and head, this will help guide your cutter more accurately. I did the fill and wipe method for filling the stamp with royal icing. The icing sometimes left a film on the top of the cookie but nothing horrible. I wish I had pictures but they were gobbled up by goblins before I was able to get one taken.
Cutter is 5 3/8 tall, 4 1/4 wide at its widest point (the arms). The stamp is about 1/16 deep. Made of plastic that has held up fine in the dishwasher.
Totally Disappointed!!

It looks like I am in the minority. I purchased the skeleton cookie cutters. I had the worst trouble with them!! I did everything to try to make just a few perfect cookies. I sprayed the cutters. The dough stuck. I tweaked the dough. Nope still stuck. I dunked the cutter in flour. The dough stuck. It's such a cute idea!! What cookies I was able to get into the ovens. They got distorted. Perhaps I should have done a practice run before adding my kids to the mess.
These cutters are soooo cute and absolutely perfect for Halloween or Dia de los Muertos

These cutters are soooo cute and absolutely perfect for Halloween or Dia de los Muertos! We used the included recipe for gingerbread and it was absolutely scrumptious! One of the best tasting gingerbreads we've ever tried. Be sure to chill the dough well so that the cut forms keep their shape when baked. And a thicker cookie is more impressive with this design. I bought two of these and a third for a gift. Can't wait to use them again!
