A Cut Aboveby Hammerklavier (5 out of 5 stars)

I am just getting into backpacking, and initially purchased a North Face Terra 65 as my rucksack. However, after trying on my friend's Atmos 65, I knew that I had to make the change. The Terra was a fine pack, but at the end of the day, it was just a bucket with straps. You can absolutely FEEL the engineering that went into the Osprey; the difference in comfort is staggering. I strongly suggest going into your local REI/etc to try one on - you really have to experience the feeling of having the Osprey on your back to understand the difference.
A list of Pros for this pack would go on and on, and most other reviews here pretty much cover it, so I'll focus on my short list of Cons. As you will see, they are extremely minor inconveniences, and really do not detract from my affection towards this pack.
- Hip pockets: They are sized a bit small, and located a little far behind you. I can fit my iPhone in there with no problem, but a bigger android phone or larger P&S camera could be a squeeze.
- Side pockets: They are cut tall and the pack rides high and snug (as it should), so it is difficult to reach back and pull something out unless you are extremely flexible.
- Top Pouch Zipper: The opening on the top pouch isn't very big. On the Terra, the zipper went 3/4 around the top of the pouch, making access very convenient.
- Fabric: This is the only area in which the Terra was stronger, as it used 420D nylon rather than the 210/100 used on the Osprey. Don't get me wrong - the fabric on the Osprey feels plenty sturdy and I imagine that using 210 vs 420 is what greatly contributes to its lighter weight, but it could be nice if they used a heavier fabric on the bottom of the pack where wear will be the heaviest.
- Cost: This is probably the biggest annoyance for me. Not the cost of the pack itself, which I think is very competitively priced against rivals such as Gregory and Arc'teryx, but the cost of the add-ons. A rain cover is $35. A travel carrier for flights is $40. A hydration pack is another $35. The map case is $20. And so on. These extras aren't necessary per se, and you certainly don't have to buy the Osprey branded iterations, but the accessories do seem to be priced a tad high in general.
Overall the Atmos 65 is comfortable, well-built, attractively designed, and by far the lightest amongst packs offering similar features and utility. I am very happy with this purchase and highly recommend this product.
Perfect for what I needed

First I love Osprey packs. They make incredibly products and are generally of the highest quality. The Atmos 65 is right in line with all the others they provide. It's very light weight and includes the internal frame which is important. The mesh backing is absolutely awesome! You will never want to carry another bag after you carry one of these. It allows for your back to breathe instead of soaking your clothing with sweat.
I've used this bag a few times now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Plenty of space for your gear (I generally carry about 12lbs including food, excluding water) but needed a bigger bag for the colder months. With that being said it is absolutely perfect for any time of the year. I may make this my all around bag as it can be adjusted to fit your load out.
*Plenty of hauling capacity and enough extra pockets for organization.
*The shoulder padding felt great. I have other bags that become uncomfortable after 15 miles and so far, no issues with this one.
*Zippers work great. No issues.
If anyone wants pics or has any questions please let me know.
By the way, this is the 2012 model and I purchase the small. I'm 5'5, 130lbs and it fits like a glove. I would recommend that anyone looking for a bag go to an outfitter to try the bags on. Get some help with the adjustments to make sure it's comfortable. If that isn't an option, make sure to take some measurements to match your size! Trust me, you want to do this. Having a bag that fits correctly can make a huge difference when out and about. It may not matter after a mile but it will make a huge difference after 15 or 30!
Great bag. Lightweight and sturdy.

Very light, very sturdy and comfortable. This is the perfect size for a few days in the wild. It only weighs a couple of pounds so it is almost in ultralight territory. One thing you should do one it arrives it to tie a couple of knots in the top of draw string that closes the main compartment. Mine came without knots and the plastic toggle came off when I first used the bag. It took a LONG time to re-attach it!
Awesome Pack!

So Glad that I got the 65L and didn't go with a bigger bag. The wear of this pack is unbelievable! I adjusted it to ride high and ensure that the waist strap comes just over my hips. I can load it with everything I need for a 3 day or a 7day hike and there is still lots of room. If you are looking to do serious hiking this is the bag to get. I am 70ins tall and the med fits perfect. I have a out door store by my house and it was almost 70 dollars cheaper to buy this bag off amazon. So if you are thinking the price is high for this bag, its not. I am going with another Osprey Pack for my girlfriend.
Great Pack

This is my second Ospery pack and I love it. This is replacing my older Gregory "expedition" pack - saved over 3 pounds. It is well made and designed, with plenty of pockets ... which I like in a pack. The hybrid frame carries weight well and it is very comfortable. Being lighter, the materials are not as robust, but a decent tradeoff with the considerable weight saving.

just got to break this in on a 4 night backpacking trip. first impression is i love it. it carries like a dream. this is my 3rd osprey pack and though it felt about maxed out at 50lbs, it didn't shift even slightly and fit like a glove. the breathable mesh back panel is superior to the kestrel design. the bottom of the bag is a crescent shape, which will take a little creative packing, but once you've figured out how to get those corners stuffed it does it's job very well. got this to be my go-to 3-6 day trip pack and think it was a good decision.

It fits!!! That's right, it fits in the overhead compartment on airplanes! I have had 3 pairs of shoes and enough clothes for a week and it still fit. I love this bag and every time I use it I figure out something new about it. I've loaded it wit 40 pounds of gear and hiked for 13 hours rough the mountains of Vermont and had no complaints.

I love this pack. I'm 6'5", 230lbs and it fits great. It's very well made, and has lots of attachments and compartments to keep my various items organized. I've gone for 3 day trips with it and had no problems: we're planning a 5 day trip this summer and I anticipate this bag will do great.

My son has had this for about 10 months and uses it at least once a month or more. He has been on some very long hiking treks which also included Philmont. This is very durable and I have nothing but positive things to say. I would buy this again, or recommend it to anyone.
