Known fault will fail in about 1 year
by Matthias Barden (1 out of 5 stars)
June 5, 2016

After about 1 year it stopped working (1 year warranty through Fitbit). The error says to step off the scale even when no one is on it, until the battery dies. Fitbit had no solution, so I took the scale apart. There are 4 thin plastic parts that support the sensors, and 3/4 were broken. I looked online and found a forum full of people with the same problem. I asked Fitbit if they had engineered a solution, but they have not. The photo is from the forum, but is the same problem I found.

DEFECTIVE and Fitbit refuses to fix.

Step on, step off, thinking... ERR

This is all you'll see on this scale after a year or two (or less!). If it happens to be more than 1 year after you bought it, tough luck, Fitbit's answer is "unfortunately your scale is broken and there's nothing we can do about it". THOUSANDS of consumers are having this issue, it is all over the Fitbit troubleshooting boards, and yet Fitbit offers no fix. This scale works for a few months, maybe you'll get 2 years out of it if you're lucky. After that, it bricks and it's nothing more than a very expensive paperweight.

BUYER BEWARE..Battery draining / no display sleep issue
by Frank (1 out of 5 stars)
February 16, 2017

I purchased this scale 2 years ago from Amazon. Aria will randomly flash to step on the scale, searches, tries to sync. This goes on for a minute, it turns off, and then a few minutes later it happens again and the cycle keeps repeating itself until the new batteries are dead 2-3 days later. Followed all troubleshooting steps on their website and made sure firmware was current which didnt help.

Decided to contact Fitbit in search of any suggestions. Big waste of time! I only wanted some help getting it to work properly and the agent brushed me off the call. I guess they dont like talking to anyone out of warranty? It was a nice scale while it lasted, but now its an expensive paperweight.

TO POTENTIAL BUYERS:

If you are okay paying for something that will no longer work as intended 2 years down the road then this isnt a bad option at all. Customer service is only good within warranty (1 year across the board). I would suggest saving money and getting a cheaper digital scale, or another branded wifi scale. Just look into their company first and see how they are customer service wise before handing them $100+

No issues with Amazon as the seller, they are up to par on all aspects, this is just about Fitbit as a company and the Aria scale.

One the worst electronic purchases I have ever made
by Jeremy Gunnels (1 out of 5 stars)

One the worst electronic purchases I have ever made. Extremely difficult to setup up infact never was able to have it sync weights with the Fitbit app. Then one incorrect step on the corner which lifted one side slightly and dropped back down, now receives Err message every time.

Do not waste your hard earned money or time. Good luck.

Known software bug bricks the device after a few years
by Richard B (1 out of 5 stars)
May 5, 2017

I purchased this scale late in November 2012. Worked fine until the company pushed out a software update earlier this year. Now has the dreaded "Step off ... Sesing ... Err" problem which is well delineated in the own support board. Just spent an hour with their support line and I was told that it was out of warranty and I am out of luck, although the unit worked perfectly until their update was pushed out. It is inconceivable that a company would create havoc with their existing user base with a software update and not take responsibility for the destruction they have caused. Never, ever buy this device; just look at Fitbit's own support board to see how bad the problem is!

I bought my scale in 2014 and it worked great for a while
by cal (1 out of 5 stars)

I bought my scale in 2014 and it worked great for a while. Over the past year it has been going through batteries every 2-3 weeks. I've tried all the "solutions" posted on the company support site to no avail. I've cleaned the battery contacts, left the batteries out for longer than 30 seconds, and tried moving the "feet" up and down (pressure sensors).

The support team can only say that my scale is out of warranty and they offer me a premium membership free for my trouble. No one can repair the scale. This scale is an overpriced paperweight and do not recommend that anyone purchase it.

I have ordered the Weight Gurus for half the price of the Aria scale. It provides more measurements, will sync with the fitbit app, and most important, offers a 5-year warranty. It is highly rated here on Amazon.

EDIT After 14 months, this no longer works.
by Arianna A. (1 out of 5 stars)
August 4, 2016

EDIT:

After a five star review, I am now changing it to one star. I was a longtime Fitbit customer, but will never purchase a Fitbit product again. This product worked well for the first 14 months. Though, soon after I posted the first review, I noticed that I often got inconsistent readings on the scale. This wasn't a huge issue. Last week after 14 months of use, the scale stopped working. The screen was dark and I thought the batteries had died. I changed the batteries, and when that didn't work, I went out to the store and purchased new batteries and tried those as well.

Once I realized that the scale was broken, and not simply out of batteries, I contacted Fitbit support. Because the scale was out of warranty (warranty runs at one year), Fitbit can't do anything to help me. They can't send a replacement, they can't fix it (there are no retailers that fix Fitbit items).

A scale is different than a daily tracker. My daily Fitbit trackers have consistently broken after about a year of wear. I assumed this was because I wore them daily. I expected this very expensive scale, which I step on at most three times a week, to last a bit longer.

Maybe the problem is is that Fitbit makes poor quality products, and they refuse to stand by them. I've had trackers since Fitbits first came out, but as of today I deleted my account. (Which, there is no easy way to delete your account, you have to email customer support).
.....

Works perfectly. Had no issues with wifi -- connected easily. Updates to the app.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!! PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE!!!
by Rachel E (1 out of 5 stars)
March 13, 2015

DO NOT BUY THIS!!! Background: Me and and my husband bought the Fitbit Charge HRs a month or so ago. We have since really enjoyed them and they have been working perfectly. So, we decided to buy the Fitbit Aria scale to easily track our weight and body fat percentages. We usually wouldn't spend so much on a scale but it sounded like a good, high-tech product; and we liked the idea of having it sync to our smartphone Fitbit apps. We received the scale and set it up easily. For the first 2-3 weeks the scale worked great, but then one day I stepped on it and it said, "Hi :) ....Sensing.....Step off.....Thinking....ERR". I tried taking out the batteries for 10 seconds, replacing the batteries, and re-setting the scale; nothing worked. Every time I try to use it now it says that phrase. I Googled the problem and it turns out that Fitbit users have been having this same problem with the scale since 2012. And people have said that they contacted customer service and they told them that it was defective and to send it back for another one. Then they would get another one and the same problem would eventually happen. So, I contacted Amazon to get a refund for the scale and they even acknowledged that they know that there has been problems with it. I am VERY disappointed in Amazon for selling this defective product because usually they are really good about things. Also, Fitbit needs to take this product off of the market or work out the bugs. It is ridiculous that they have known about this problem for 3 years and have not fixed it. Bottom Line: Save your money, this product is not worth the hassle.

Wifi setup and operation doesn't work well.
by Chris Demetriou (2 out of 5 stars)
January 22, 2017

Had this scale for about a month and a half, not at all happy with it.

Wifi setup is awful. Setup via the "app" on windows 8.x and windows 10 doesn't work with high-resolution monitors. Scaling in the setup application (downloaded) is all wrong, doesn't show all the info on the screen -- the setup application is unusable. (This has been reported to fitbit community and presumably customer support since 2015, and it's still a problem.) Setup via the web application is flaky. If you do get far into the web setup process, unspecified errors connecting to the network are common ... which cause you to restart the whole process. I give them some credit because any process in which you have to join a different wifi network is going to be a bit failure-prone... but you can literally spend hours on this and get nowhere. (And, I'm *quite* sure that this isn't a signal-strength issue, etc.; 10 feet away from the AP, full strength according to the UI displays.)

Eventually I managed to get the scale connected to wifi. Unfortunately, >75% of weighings the scale would fail connect to the wifi network (or service) to record data.

Works fine as an unconnected scale, but that's not what you're paying for.

Quality Scale, but does not last
by MacawSquawker (1 out of 5 stars)
May 26, 2018

First of all I want to say that I have high expectations for this scale. The reason is one can purchase a scale for around $30 that has more functionality and will synchronize with Aps.

The good news first-

Connecting the scale when it works is quick and easy . When it doesn't work it can take hours to figure out. Over the 21 months I have had this easy and difficult times connecting when I changed WIFI. Sometimes it connected right away other times I got error messages.

But...

Once connected it truly syncs effortlessly and updates your weight online. As you loose it rewards you with motivating badges. I lost 36 lbs and it tracked it!

Now, after 21 months the scale gave up and after spending hours troubleshooting, both fitbit and I agree that the scale no longer works and is defective. Fitbit states they do not repair their products, only replace them. Once outside the warranty there is nothing you can do but throw the scale away! Wow I could have bought 4 high quality scales for the price of this one! I asked (begged) Fitbit to sell me a discounted scale for my trouble. They would not!

Conclusion:

Great scale, once set up.

Replaceable during 1 year warranty

After warranty not repairable
*****

I would buy extended warranty for sure or choose another product
