These are great for the price
by Artie (5 out of 5 stars)

These are great for the price. Totally changed the way I knock back pure expensive liquor. It will be cloudy, crack, and melt faster if you do it right side up. PRO TIP FOR SOLID CLEAR(er) ICE: Fill it with pre-boiled/filtered or distilled water, and place them upside down in a very small cooler with 1/2 inch of water. A cooler like this would be fine: MIER Soft Cooler Bag Small Insulated Lunch Box Bag for Kids, Girls, Boys(Green)

You'll have to place your finger over the hole so it doesn't leak and make sure they stay level in the freezer. When ice crystals form, they become less dense than water, so it freezes from the top down forcing the gas to come out of solution. Placing the hole on the bottom with water to retain the seal lets the air escape. Close the cooler for slower freezing, which takes about 2-3 days depending on your temperature. See the before and after pics. You don't have to spend all the crazy money on clear ice makers.

Works just as advertized. Great price, fun!

These spherical ice cube makers are a lot of fun. Given that they're pretty cheap, I really wish I had bought them earlier! I was able to get significantly clearer spheres of ice when I boiled tap water before freezing (I poured it into the mold while it was still hot). Try it - one without boiling, and one with boiling (I attached a picture of the A/B test I did above)

Works great when you follow YouTube left by another customer

Box had no instructions, but I went to the company's site on the box and saw YouTube video posted but another customer. My first batch was ugly because I'm an idiot and filled the water using the little hole in the top. That hole is for expansion people. Lol. Fill to the water line and place in freezer. It's just that simple. Let sit on counter a few minutes and it pops right out. if you run water over it, you'll cause cracks. Love this gadget. Highly recommend you use it and get it right the first time.

Disappointed with results. There ARE tricks? Update to 4 stars.

There must be a trick...

I bought 2 sets of 2, and have tried both hot distilled water and room temperature distilled water without success. Hot water results were 2 salvaged ice spheres, both cloudy with a lot of cracks (and 2 that fell apart). Room temperature results were 3 salvaged cubes (and 1that split in 2), also cloudy and and show lots of cracks. I've ordered a small cooler with the hope that placing the filled molds inside it will slow the freezing process and help get more clear cubes. I've had relatively good success with yield from other brands (both squares and rounds of various sizes), but still not getting "clear" cubes and spheres. In fairness, the molds are well made but I expected far better results.

Update: After some trial and error, my spheres are getting better so an update is warranted. There ARE some tricks. Distilled water! It does turn out that using these inside an insulated lunch bag helps slow down the freezing process and resulting in more clear spheres. Also, rinsing them prior to putting them into a cocktail will remove the frostiness and make them look like oversized glass marbles. Still not perfectly clear, but better. Don't waste time boiling distilled water. That method (without using the insulated lunch bag) resulted in very cracked spheres that broke into pieces in a beverage. If they included an option to add &/or explanation for use of the insulated container, I'd consider an upgrade to 5 stars. 4 of these sphere molds, plus an insulated container to freeze them in, is still about 35% the cost of the Wintersmiths sphere mold with container.

I've bought numerous ice molds and these are one of the best. I use double Old Fashion whisky glasses so the 2 inch ice cube molds are too small. The sphere molds are ideal compared to the cubes especially for whisky and this is the best large sphere mold I've found. Initially, I found these at Williams & Sanoma and bought two to try out. Liked them so much I bought two on Amazon. You can stack them in the freezer to minimize space used which is another plus. The extra large 2.5 inch cube molds I had took up more space and wife would get annoyed. These I can stack in the freezer door neatly. Taking the ice out is very simple just run under cold water for a few seconds. The instructions that come with it are pretty spot on. The material that it's made out of is solid too, not that cheap brittle plastic that some molds are made out of.

My only complaint is that the ice consistently develops a crack down the middle which adds more surface area for the ice to melt quicker but its not a major issue.

FYI: The glass in pictures are double Old Fashioned glasses so they are much larger than a regular whisky glass.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT!

I recently started drinking The Macallan single malt Scotch. While looking at merchandise on their website, I found an ice sphere press and wanted one immediately. The problem is the price tag. The one sold by Macallan is 650 Euro which by todays exchange rates will cost you about $843. All other brands of ice sphere presses I've found ranged from $500-$1,500. I thought there had to be a better option and then I found these.

These ice sphere molds work perfectly. Use as directed and you will achieve a clear practically perfect 2.5" sphere of ice each time. Durable and well contructed from food grade materials. You'll get clearer ice if you use filtered or boiled water. If prefered, you can even add fruit and stuff into the molds for presentation.

This morning, I used 2 spheres to chill a very large cafe latte. I would normally fill almost the entire glass with regular ice and then have to add more ice half way through cause it melted. These spheres worked perfectly. Hardly any dilution of my espresso and by the time I finished there were still 2 resonably large ice spheres in my glass that I could have continued to use in a refill. These things are just brilliant! I have no idea why anyone would ever spend $500-$1500 for a press when they could have these. These are perfect to chill your liquor or any beverage you prefer to not become diluted.

Someone rated this product at 2 stars. If you actually read their review you'll understand that the person is an idiot. If the 2.5" ice sphere doesn't fit your glass, use a different glass. If you don't want your beverage to splash, put the ice in first. It's just common sense.

If you like whiskey on the rocks then you should get it. You would be surprised how many guests comment on the spheres when I bust them out. These spherical ice cube makers overall are a lot of fun. They're pretty cheap and I really wish I purchased them a few years ago.

Tip: You can get significantly clearer spheres of ice when You use boiled tap water before freezing. I love feedback so please let me know if this review was Helpful or not helpful.

Perfect for cocktails!

This is the perfect home addition for anyone that enjoys a well-made chilled drink without worrying about it getting watered down too quickly! I regularly use these for Old Fashioned's as well as any Scotch I don't want to have neat nor overly diluted.

These are a quick fill in the sink (unless you are trying to get super clear, which you then need to pre-boil and use distilled water if you have it). And they stack well in the freezer so you don't lose too much shelf space between the random instances you decide to use them. When it is time to use, just a quick run of hot water over the mold does the trick and the spheres pop right out!

Pretty decent

I'll be honest - we are not those people who care enough to go the extra mile to get a perfectly clear spherical ball of ice. We buy average liquor at an average price in our average apartment in an average glass -- as long as it keeps my drink cold without watering it down, it's done it's job. These ice molds definitely do their job! Fill to the line as directed on the side of the mold, push down on the cover until it's sealed, and pop into a flat undisturbed section of your freezer. We use water from our Brita filter, nothing face. The ice ball does have a haze to it, and for us that's fine. Two or three times the ball has had a crack down the middle, but I think it was being disturbed when the door was opened. Since I moved the mold to another location in the freezer, this hasn't happened again. Keeps our drinks very cold and nothing is watered down anymore (bless you). Definitely recommend - great value for the price.

the type and characteristics of the ice you use can have a major impact on the taste and enjoyment o
by N. J. Steere (5 out of 5 stars)

In the life of the average whiskey drinker, "Good Ice" might not be the first thing that comes to mind in quality drinkcraft. But, the type and characteristics of the ice you use can have a major impact on the taste and enjoyment of your drink. And since most whiskey drinkers like their firewater without mixers, you're left with drinking the stuff neat, or on the rocks. Thus, a drink with only two ingredients:

Whiskey

Ice

And now you see how one will inevitably consider ways to improve on how they bring the second ingredient to bear in their libation of choice. Most drinkers eventually find a bottle or style of whiskey that suits them, rendering #1 solved. And while there are those of us who are always curious and trying new bottles of the brown stuff, one can't simply think of whiskey ALL day (though I've certainly tried).

Enter, accompanied by fog machines and probably lasers, the Tovolo Ice Sphere. The goal of an ice sphere is performing 3 roles in a glass of whiskey:

Keep the drink chilled

Melt slowly, thus maintaining said chill while keeping dilution to a minimum

Look super sweet

These Tovolo spheres do a thricely great job of tackling that to-do list. These bad boys turn out perfectly round spheres of ice that chill a glass of the brown stuff nicely, while dissolving slow enough to last through a second pour (don't you JUDGE me, internet). The molds come in two pieces: the clear plastic bottom, and a silicone top. The plastic bottom gets filled with water to a marked fill line, and you insert the silicone top. The silicone top has rounded sides that form the top half of the sphere and push the water upward into the sphere shape. The top has a small hole in the center so if you overfilled the excess water comes out on top of the mold. The only trick is to insert the top slow enough that water doesn't come spurting out the top, but unless you're slamming it home you've got nothing to worry about. These bad boys go in the freezer, and in a few hours you're ready to enjoy. The silicone top is flexible, which makes removing the ice from the mold easy.

We've had our set for over a year with no sign of wear. Durable enough in my opinion, and at this price point if anything happened we'd just buy a new set. Highly recommended.

Rating: 4.3 out of 5 Tasty Whiskeys.
