On/off Switch is too fragileby Bob W. (2 out of 5 stars)

Everything about this light is great - except the on/off switch. You must be very gentle with the on/off switch, as it breaks off very easily. I bought several of these for my daughter and her friends to use in our swimming pool. One of the on/off switches broke the very first time it was turned on. I thought the kid must have done something extraordinary, until it happened to me also. The switch moves a magnet inside the case to turn the light on and off (to maintain water tightness). Once the plastic switch breaks off, there is no way to operate it. The rest of the light is very sturdy feeling, and the light is very bright. But what good is it if you can't turn it on?
Right price, but some quality assurance issues that can be easily fixed

Other reviewers seem to be slamming this product because it is made in China, but I think its important to analyze the actual product itself. For the price, this is a decent flashlight if you are willing to spend some time to understand its weakness--quality assurance. Specifically, I noticed that the contact panel which directs current to the LED bulb was a bit out of line, causing sporadic flashing. The solution was a simple tug on the contact that fixed the problem immediately. I'm not a pro diver, but for its intended use as a backup, this unit has so far served me will on numerous salt water expeditions. For the price, it is worth it but I understand how a pro diver would not want to trust this unit for mission critical applicaitons.
Not as bright as Coast, but a fraction the cost

My parents have an almost identical light they use for diving, except it is the Coast brand. While the light is not as bright or durrable feeling as the Coast lights, it worked fine for the diving we were doing. We used the lights to help spot things under coral ledges or point out what we were looking at. Underwater my parent's lights could outshine this for brightness, but you could always get by just fine with this. Battery life was great. Went on ~12 dives in one week, using the light on and off on every dive, and it lasted the whole trip on just the 4AA batteries.
Why not 5 stars?
The on off switch is a little finikie, but so is my parent's light of the same design. If not for the finikie on off switch I would have given 5 stars.
Low Cost and Bright, Bought for Snorkeling/Kayaking, Failed & Died After First Use.

OK, no one should be naive enough to think you are getting a genuine 150-foot Dive Light for under ten bucks.
I ordered this for the low price and encouraged by many good reviews.
I wanted it for light use/occasional surface immersion (swimming pool, maybe the beach, or on a boat, and possibly snorkeling. This is NOT for Scuba use, so I'm not expecting any serious 'dive light' performance. Just maybe snorkeling and use around my kayak and other water sports where a flashlight can get pretty wet.
******* ONE WEEK UPDATE: This light has failed, and died, after 1 week and only one time in the water. I first tried it out in my home pool and it did reasonably well, and I posted this review with 4 Stars (my original review as it originally appeared is below, because it's all accurate for that first trial).
Then, 3 days later, I took the light out again for a second test in my home pool.
This time the light flickered a couple of times, then went dark and refused to come On again. I tried fresh batteries several times and did all the home troubleshooting you can do with a flashlight, but no dice. It's completely dead.
Apparently it shorted out on my closet shelf after that first night's test in the water of my home pool. Or maybe the flimsy switch has failed. Or maybe both-- maybe it's shorted out from its first exposure to water AND the switch is broken.
I'm certain it was NOT "operator error". I've owned and used a lot of dive lights, I've been SCUBA certified for a long time, and I was VERY careful to tighten down and secure the light before putting it in the water that first time.
So it's dead, and I'm out a few bucks. As you can see from my original review, I knew it was not likely to be a real Dive Light at this low price, but I did expect it to be a 'seaworthy' water-resistant light for use kayaking, and around boats, and maybe for surface snorkeling.
Well, it's dead now, and didn't even survive its first immersion in a swimming pool. So I've downgraded my review to 1 Star.
At least the Lanyard was salvageable, LOL. But seriously, I hope this saves other Amazon shoppers some wasted time and money.
I'll leave my original 4-Star review below so others can read what I first thought of this light, when I didn't know it would die after its first exposure to water. +++++++++
Here's my original review:
With 4 AA's this thing is seriously BRIGHT, easily throws a strong 100 foot plus beam on land and illuminates well in my pool at night.
No way of gauging Lumens but it is at least as bright on land as two different 100-lumen Black Diamond headlamps I compared it to outside last night.
It throws a tight 12-18" beam rather than a flood but should still provide plenty of ambient light underwater. It does in my pool.
Waterproofness is a different question. I'm not going to torture-test this until it leaks & fails because that proves nothing...at this price, the next one out of the box could perform totally differently (for better or worse).
IT DOES NOT FLOAT. My first test was to turn it On, then drop it into the deep end (9 feet) of my pool. It sank straight to the bottom.
It comes with a wrist lanyard, but would need your own "float" attached if you need it to float.
While on the bottom it illuminated the entire pool very well, as well or better as my 100-watt pool bulb light does. 72 hours later it still works. There's just one O ring, make sure you tighten it all the way.
Switch rotates to 90 degree angle to turn on, and feels flimsy. I can imagine it breaking easily if dropped.
I think this light should be a good value light for use (with lanyard or other strap) while kayaking, swimming, surface snorkeling, and surface water sports generally.
The deeper you submerge under water the more waterproofing is required, and it adds up fast and geometrically, so no I would not expect this to function as a serious SCUBA light.
No diver should ever trust their life to any ten dollar no-brand Chinese flashlight anywhere, anytime. Your life is worth the extra bucks to buy a real dive light for SCUBA.
Please don't kid yourself that some dollar store piece of 'gear' will not fail you just when your life depends on it.
But for a backup or extra flashlight when kayaking or boating or just fooling around on or near the water, this is a good value for the money.
Serious tip: If you want a reliable semi-submersible light in the $30 to $50 price range, look at the Black Diamond Storm Headlamp, 160 lumens and rated to withstand submersion to 3 feet for 30 minutes. The BD Storm makes a great camping/general use land light as well. Solid warranty, great build quality. Get that, then treat this TomTop as a backup.
4 stars because it's very bright and works fine so far, just can't say yet as to durability or how much water it can take.
Great for "Lava Tubes"!
by Isabel J. Torres (4 out of 5 stars)

This underwater flashlight is a wonderful tool to use. We took our kids swimming in a lava tube (an underwater cave formed by hot lava). It was super cold and dark inside. We did not have an underwater flashlight the first time we went in so we did not get very far in the cave. We decided we need to come back with an underwater flashlight because the place was so cool and we wanted to explore it more on the inside. Since we got this flashlight we have used in an underwater cave, camping, on a hiking trail next to a river and night viewing of lava from an active volcano. I like this design because lightweight and easily fits in a small hand (like a child size hand). The strap on the flashlight is a well thought design because it's perfect for swimming underwater or can securely attach to your wrist while hiking at night.
It's best features:
Strap: makes it easy to attach to wrist and use underwater
Bright color: makes it easy to find in a bag or backpack
What I learned while using this flashlight:
I fumbled a bit with the batteries at first and had get help to put them in. It was not very clearly marked as to which way to batteries in
The on and off switch is sort of like a toggle switch and I think it would be better as a twisting on/off mechanism at the top of the flashlight. With the toggle switch, it could get accidentally flipped on in a bag or back pack.

Ordered two, one functional, one not. Broken promises.

I ordered two of these for back up lights, only one works. I was able to fix it because I am an Electrical Engineer. I just re-soldered everything...China Quality.
This is the second time I have reviewed this product because the first time I gave a poor review the seller contacted me and said
"Thanks for purchasing from shop and we feel sorry if you had an unpleasant shopping experience!
To express our sincere apology, we would like to send you a new flashlight. But it will take about 20-25 days since it's sent from China. Hope you can understand us and give us a chance to make things right.
If you are satisfied with our service and products, would you please remove your negative feedback after you reveice the product? That would be the greatest encouragement to us. Thanks very much!!
Waiting for your reply. :)"
I removed my comment and replied that I would be happy to receive another one as far as it worked.....Well, that was July 17th, it is now Sept 8th. That was 36 business days ago, still no package....
Thus, the one star. Not only not functional, but also made promises they dont intend to keep.
To the bad reviewers, please realize you are buying an 8 ...

To the bad reviewers, please realize you are buying an 8 dollar shipped light. I am a dive instructor, I dive every single day multiple times. I bought 8 of these last year for backup lights on my night dives, they quickly became my primary lights and my 60 dollar lights became the backups. The light emitted is very powerful and pleasingly white. I keep one in my bcd pocket, I never wash it, never maintain it, haven't changed the batteries in over a year, its been down to 140 feet with me on many occasions and it works like a charm still to this day... I just ordered more... if you are removing the batteries and cleaning the light, make sure you grease both o-rings with silicone every time and watch the second oring when you tighten it, it can get bunched up if you aren't careful.
My only issue and its a 10 cent fix per light is the small screw which holds the switch on is made of a corrosive metal, unscrew it, take it to a hardware store and buy either a plastic or stainless replacement, check that it is tight before every dive and you should never have an issue. All in all excellent product.
Broke after only a few uses

This is not a good light unless you are just swimming in a pool. If you need to rely on an underwater light to stay alive, such as when scuba diving at night or in dark areas, you do not want to buy this light. The switch fails due to a poor magnet in the lever on the side. The internal magnetic switch which reacts to the magnet in the lever works just fine if you have another magnet you can stick to the side of the light, but that is not reliable. I think this would be a decent economy light if they improved the magnet in the lever.
I originally purchased this as a cheap loaner light, but I would not loan it to anyone due to the unreliable switch.
Bright, Waterproof, Poor QC

Shipped pretty quickly (8 days) considering it arrived direct from China (with customs form attached).
OVERALL:
Light is plenty bright and waterproofing works fine but this light required some fitting to get working. The overall build quality seems fair for the low price, with cold solder on the circuitry and injection molding leftovers in the battery compartment. It is very inexpensive so don't be surprised by the bare-bones construction of this light's guts. It can be a little hard to open/close I have a pretty firm grip and it takes some cranking to fully seat the seal on this light.
PROBLEM:
The contact panel which directs current to the LED bulb was almost 90 degrees out of line. You will see this green contact board on the back side of the aluminum "plug" which positions the LED. It took me a moment to realize why the light wasn't working with brand new batteries... the circuit was incomplete due to improperly positioned contacts.
FIX:
A moment of studying the light showed that the two-groove "alignment system" should be at a 90 degree angle from the contacts (the large solder points), instead of nearly in-line as mine had arrived from the factory. So I popped out the circuit board, realigned it, and popped it back in. Since the contacts aren't marked and the first orientation didn't work (incorrect polarity), I opened the light up again, rotated the contact board 180 degrees, and popped it back in.
The fix requires no tools and takes only a moment.
This light is quite bright, waterproof, and cheap. I would not trust it for a cave diving expedition, but for snorkeling and using around the docks it will be just fine.
Excellent value for scuba use

For the price, definitely a 5 star purchase! Very effective and functional scuba flashlight, I am very happy with the underwater light output. Sure, the 'spotlight' models and some much more expensive models may work better (if you need top performance there are better ones out there, but no where near this price). Prior to this purchase, I was using a $85 spotlight and $65 LED model. I rarely use them anymore, and the output of these compares very well to both (I think better than my $65 one). Being that I don't rely on a flashlight, I see no need to spend too much on one. My approach, I bought one of these to test it out. I liked it so much I bought 2 more! At $9, not too much risk to buy one and test it out yourself.
The price was actually a 'turn-off' at first for me ... too cheap, won't last, will break? I feel like I struck gold on this one, probably the best value scuba item I've bought. Of the 3 I have, I've used the original purchase about 15 dives myself, at least two dives a max depth of 100ft, and half of the dives have a max depth of 66ft or more. The light output is very effective, and works well in a couple cave dives I like to do off Maui. The second one I loan to dive buddies, probably have 7 or 8 dives on that one. No issues yet. To be safe, I did put silicon grease on the o-ring/threaded area to ensure a good seal.
