Bright Little Projector
by Alex Su (5 out of 5 stars)
December 19, 2012

I bought this as a gift for someone, who loves to go to cinema to watch movies in large screen. Cinema is fine, but the cost of watching one movie and the travel to the nearest cinema to us was a hassle. So I decided to buy a projector as a gift. But the idea of projector lamps dying so often made me research for an alternative: LED projectors. Despite having lower lumen brightness rating than traditional projectors, the idea of not having to worry about replacing lamps is a big plus.

So I came across this Brookestone HDMI Pocket Projector. After reading several reviews, I ordered it hoping that this purchase will be well worth it.

Here are the specs:
- 85 lumens
- 854 X 480 native resolution, also accepts 1080p inputs
- Built-in battery lets the projector runs up to 2 hours, and also as power bank for your mobile devices
- Full HDMI sized input port
- Small sized projector (your average external 2.5" HDD size)
- 2 built in speakers

It arrived from Amazon yesterday, well packed inside a larger box. Upon taking the projector out of its packing, I was really amazed at how small it is ( around the size of an 2.5" external HDD ). Although you cant fit it into your pocket and carry it around, it is still very small compared to traditional projectors that have their lamps burnt out so often. To be honest, I was sort of worried about its performance, given its small-ish size but then again its arrived (Cant turn back now, can I?). So I plugged it in to let it charge till fully charged before testing it (around an hour or so to full charge).

Plugged it into the HDMI port on my lappy and switched it on in my brightly lit room and I am getting ~30" screen size on the wall quite near in front of me. Despite being only 85 lumens and in a brightly lit room, the image is still very visible although a bit washed out. I was really really impressed by the picture it produced and was starting to feel confident that this little thing can deliver.

Next was to try its rated 60" size screen at long throw distance. Positioned the projector on the other end of my room, projecting it to the wall on the other end of my room ( I have a small room ). FYI this projector does not have keystone and zoom adjustments, so taking a moment or two to find the right position is needed. With the lights on, the image is very washed out so I switched off the lights and was blown away by the ~60" screen movie on my wall. It was vivid, color was quite accurate and of course very very bright.

After fine tuning the focus on this little projector, I settled down on my movie for about two hours. The fan noise on this projector was almost silent while watching movie and it stayed cool through out the operation time, it was no where near "hot" in terms of temperature. I think you can well go with 100" size with this little thing, but my room is too small and I do not have a larger wall to project to. 60" is good enough and I would prefer this over a smaller tv set. Heck, buying a 60" tv is out of the consideration because of the cost associated with it. And you cant possibly carry that 60" tv with you but with this tiny projector, all you need is a dimly lit room and a surface to project on ^_^

All in all, this is a worthwhile projector to have, at times I really do not believe that the image was projected from such a tiny device and that the brightness rating was just 85 lumens (it feels brighter than that). It does have a built-in speakers but I did not use it, I plugged in my own speaker for a fuller sound.

To sum it up, here are the pros:
- Very very portable
- Easy to set up and use
- Bright 60" image
- Runs cool and fan noise is minimal
- Built in battery, lets it run for two hours and as a backup battery for your mobile devices
- Almost instant on and off (No fan cooling period as in traditional projectors)
- Long, long rated lamp life
- Standard tripod mount hole at the bottom of the projector
- Price, at $299.99 it is well within many people's budget

Of course, there are also cons:
- Focus wheel, a bit too sensitive to the touch
- Included HDMI cable is too short (You can purchase a longer ones though, not expensive anyway)
- No Keystone and zoom adjustments
- No remote

One side note though, this projector does not have built in media player which you could plug in a thumb drive and play movies off of it. Other products have this feature at a higher cost of the projector itself. I always leave my laptop switched on, and I do not have the habit of storing movies in a thumb drive so this feature is not important to me. But to some, this might be a deciding factor.

This is all for my review, thanks for taking the time to read and yes, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is looking at purchasing a highly portable tiny projector. This is really a package of portability and quality... might be looking at purchasing a second set.

A solid alternative that keeps up with its more expensive relatives
by Matt Keenan (4 out of 5 stars)

I've had this for a year and some months now and I freaking love it. It is so small and light and easy to move around. I always forget that it has a built in battery and every time I remember it makes me enjoy it even more. I can take it wherever I want and get a solid hour and a half of nonstop video on it.

I bought mine used and the only downside is that the focus wheel is noticeably loose. I can wiggle it left and right within its vertical slot and the focus will change. But this is a minute detail and doesn't really bother me.

This isn't the brightest of the bunch but you can't really expect that from something this small and this cheap (relatively speaking). Night time use, or a decently dark room works fine. The darker the better though.

And finally the picture. It doesn't produce a full HD image, but damn does it look good. I usually stream Netflix, HBO, YouTube from my chromecast or computer in HD and the picture from the projector looks absolutely amazing. It is very clear and easy to watch. I've even played some Playstation 3 games on it and it looked great. This is a solid product.

Great Device!!!!

I want to be SUPER CLEAR why exactly this product got 4 out of 5 stars and not 5 out of 5. The SINGLE issue I have with the product isn't really with the product, it's the wording in how it's advertized. Marketing isn't supposed to be a guessing game for the consumer. This is very misleading as others have said and I think either Amazon or Brookstone should fix. I bought this on the idea I was getting a machine capable of producing an HD signal at least 720p only to find out the wording used is only there to mislead people to think that. There is absolutely NO other reason to have the description the way it is, unless someone was purposely trying to mislead people. It's obvious to anyone given the fact so many have commented on it already.

With that said, It's a great device. It's much smaller than I had expected and a much better picture than I had expected(even after finding out it wasn't 720p). I don't really have anything bad to say about it. I use it with my laptop to watch TV and Movies. It's nice to watch what I want where I want. With this addition, my whole TV/Movie experience is completely mobile. It's refreshing. Sure I could watch the same stuff on my laptop but the experience is apples and oranges.

I absolutely love this!

The projector is absolutely amazing for the $300 price range. It allows someone who is on a tight budget to make a home theater. It works with my ipad (after getting the hdmi adapter), it works with all of my game systems (also after getting the necessary adapters if they don't have hdmi inputs), and it works with my laptop.

Cons: It's not very bright. Also, I knew before I bought this that it is not true HD, but the only thing that bugged me about this was that any text that is in very small font becomes very difficult to read. However, the quality of the image is excellent if you can block out most of the sun light from the room (which also depends on how far away you have the projector. The further away you have it, the darker the room needs to be).

I haven't used the usb part on the project yet, but I'm sure that it works for what it's meant to do.

Overall for a $300 pocket projector, it is a very impressive device! I've had several compliments from friends on how awesome the quality of the image is and how well the projector works. It's best used for watching movies, but you can play games on it as long as you don't need to read any tiny font on it. I highly recommend giving this a try if you are looking for a projector in the $300 price range! Very impressed by this projector.

the idea is great

For some reason my unit does not always project HD from every device I hook it up to. It does HD from my Samsung Note2 phone, but it will only go 750 from my Sony Vaio. I think it also varies based on what you are projecting. My son and I played Age of Empires with it. He thought it was very cool so big, compared to the desktop screen.

I have a large Epson professional projector, plus I use them in school. This is not as bright as those and I did not expect it to be so. But it is pretty good considering, especially in the dark. I will project pretty big too! I have a 8' x 10' screen for my Epson and I easily filled 75% of it. and it looked good. I like the fact that the bulb is rated for so long (20,000 hours) as I have replaced them for my big projector at about the full cost of this projector per bulb. Those bulbs are expected to to only live about 500 hours. The sound from the fan is similar to all projectors. The speakers worked better than I expected based on everyone elses review. I like that it is a back up battery for my phone etc. I look forward to trying it in my RV as opposed to only my small DC TV. My biggest other issue is the size and location of the tiny focus wheel. It is small and very sensitive, but you can get it okay. It is amazing that it is so small compared to other projectors. When you think of how much space those old big screen tv's used to take, wow this is pretty cool.

Overall I think it is a fun gadget and handy for battery back up. I have a Anker Astro E4 external battery back up, and love it, but this works too!

I think it is a good value for the money and a great space saver.

I love this projector
by Teks (4 out of 5 stars)

I love this projector. Videos and texts come out really clear. There are only a couple of little things that bother me, personally. First, when using this at night, it turns the room really bright; it's kinda like a really bright night light. I just personally prefer darker surroundings like when watching movies in a movie theater kinda feel. I wish there was a way to turn down the brightness without compromising the quality of the video, but that's just my personal preference. The other thing that bothers me a little is the buzzing of the projector when in use. It's not too too loud or anything but it's just there, whirring in the background. Other than those, it's great. I'd still recommend.

Amazing Little Projector
by William Ayers (5 out of 5 stars)

I got this because I'm always on the move, but wanted a way to play movies or xbox with my friends while I'm stationary. I had a 50" TV, but quickly realized how much a pain in the arse those are to move around. This provides the same size screen, with almost the same amount of detail, for about half the price (and is MUCH easier to move around). For anyone in the Military, or who travels around a lot (but doesn't have access to a TV), I would highly recommend it.

I'm sure this goes without saying, but like most projectors, this works best in dark rooms. I will say that you *can* see the picture with the lights on (sorta), but it's a bit washed out. Even still, it's an impressive picture, especially when you consider the size of the projector.

Buyer beware!! VCI is not an authorized Brookstone distributor. Junk!
by Terri (1 out of 5 stars)

If you buy from VCI, and have a problem, both VCI and Brookstone point fingers at each other and refuse to repair/replace/credit. I bought this projector in January 2018. One Year Warranty covered by Brookstone was included in the box. I used the product once, paid $349.99 and now in May 2018, the product no longer works. Piece of junk.

Great for traveling
by D. Johnson (5 out of 5 stars)
September 20, 2013

So my husband bought this for me for my upcoming deployment. I need to travel light, but enjoy watching movies and TV shows. Instead of gathering friends to crowd around a computer, this projector will allow me to have movie nights with a 60" screen.

We tested it "camping." The battery life lasted for an entire movie. We bought the iPhone adapter and with 4G and HBO Go, we were able to enjoy a flick.

Note that this projector needs a semi-white background. I've seen some projectors that are able to work with darker backdrops, but this one is not powerful enough. We ended up hanging a beach towel (print side facing in) as a screen.

Cool device!
by Chuck (5 out of 5 stars)
February 7, 2013

I saw this in the Atlanta airport at the Brookstone store. I was amazed that i could get the same quality of performance from this little device as in a $500 or more full size projector. It is so conveniently portable, and the second major thing it's got going is that it also recharges my devices (phone, tablet, laptop). Have been using it for a short time now and it still runs great. Movie night has changed. One thing is though it really helps to have a white wall or a screen for it, does not work well on a tan or any other colored wall. Otherwise perfection so far!! Would recommend this to any and everybody. Thanks Brookstone for such a fine, reliable, easy to set up and use projector.
