Valuable Toolby Nathan Gray (3 out of 5 stars)

Certainly, at this price, this is not a toy that you would use in your swimming pool or on a day at the lake. But the Hydroview does have a great deal of value for specific applications. This device is gaining popularity in the water storage tank industry for underwater coatings inspections. The Hydroview is very well suited for such professional applications, as it is light and versatile. The plastic build is ideal for hoisting to the top of a 200 ft. tall water tower, and the cable insures that if the product malfunctions or loses battery you don't have to drain 1,000,000+ gallons of water in order to retrieve it.
If you're looking for a toy boat, then this item may be a little over the top, but if you're a professional in the underwater inspections industry, then you'll likely understand the value of this tool.
The feel of an item - how it strikes you when you hold it and examine it - can be difficult to explain, but the quality of build with the Hydroview is really remarkable. I have mine displayed in my office when I'm not using it, and it's not just that I get comments on it, but I get people who just can't get over how impressive it is. The Hydroview also comes with a very well constructed padded box for transport.
I purchase a Petzl portage to carry my Hydroview while I'm climbing, and this works well. Of course, keep in mind that an iPad is going to be a necessity to operate the Hydroview.
Other than that, all I can say Is I'm very pleased with the design and functionality of the device.
Update Feb, 2017. Looking back at this review, I now see that there's more to be said. My ROV has had several issues, and I'll name them quickly and be done with it.
1. There is no removable memory card on which data is stored, thus video files must be transferred via WiFi. This method of transferring files is extremely time consuming when compared to simply removing a memory card and inserting it into your computer.
2. Videos can only be stored in increments of a few minutes. This means that if you shoot a thirty-minute video, you'll have six different five-minute video files stored on the device. When I shoot several fifteen minute inspection videos over the course of a week, it can be pretty confusing to decipher which incremental video goes with the others.
3. The lights in this ROV are too close to the camera lens. This placement of the lights creates significant distortion in very low light situations.
In fact, in the near complete absence of light, far beneath the surface, when the lens is completely reliant upon the LED lights, the feedback in the footage is so severe as to render the footage useless.
4. I've had a lot of issues with the app crashing. The app is necessary in order to operate this ROV; when the app crashes, it can take a great deal of time to get things back online.
5. One of the engines burned out on mine after around ten hours of use. I've not messed with replacing the engine as the ROV is simply not up to the standards that my industry requires.
On a final note, I'm fully aware that this was an early model from AquaBotix, and I would suspect that many of these noted issues have been addressed in the newer models. I would encourage you to have a look at some newer offerings from Aquabotix before you make up your mind about a potential purchase.

It seems to be the coolest thing in the world, and I rated it 5 stars just by looking at it.... but this is five thousand dollars, and in the description you call it AFFORDABLE!???!! I wouldn't ever buy this unless it was at a sane and reasonable price. You need to lower it.
