Great for canoe trips to the Boundary Watersby Andrew Frenz (5 out of 5 stars)

I have used this backpack on several canoe trips to the Boundary Waters in MN and love it. It sits on the bottom of the canoe which is often wet and has been through all day rain showers. It keeps all of my things inside dry. The water bottle holder on the side is just big enough to fit my Sawyer water bottle. This is a lot better than what I used to do: an old backpack with a big plastic bag inside!
Holds water well.

Used the bag one time and the seam at the bottom blew out. This was during a canoeing/camping trip in which it rained. Luckily I didn't have anything other than clothes in this bag. I had the bag packed pretty tight so only had four or five pieces really get soaked . I put the rest of the my dry clothes in a trash bag then back inside this bag for the remainder of the trip. I still have the bag but haven't used it since. I meant to try and return it, but forgot about it shortly after we returned from our trip.
Waterproof, tough, spacious, and comfy

This is one of the best day packs I have every owned.
Waterproof: I haven't been hit with many downpours, but the appearance of the materials suggests it could handle being underwater if I closed the top well.
Tough: I've used it at least 10 times per week (as a bike commuter) over the last few months- it still appears brand new.
Spacious: I suspect I could camp for at least a few days using this pack.
Comfy. The pack weighs about 14 pounds when I fill it to go to work (laptop, papers, a change of clothes, and sundries). I suspect the new pack is made of heavier materials than my old one, but I feel like I'm carrying about half the load.
Update on 9/23/2015: I've continued to use this backpack at least 10 times per week. It remains in great condition with the minor exception that the reflector strips are starting to come off.
Looks great but as durable as a disposable poncho. DO NOT BUY

I had this less than one week before the top strap came off. It wasn't a critical piece and since I'm currently travelling and diving, I just kept using it. Two weeks after that I noticed that a hole had developed in the bottom of the bag.
This bag has seen very little use. It looks *new*. Yet it is now an ex dry bag.
I used this to carry my fins, mask and other assorted diving gear from place to place and then used it to carry my food and small electronics on the boat when I'm *using* my diving gear. And still, a hole the size of my thumb in the bottom of the bag. The worst part is that I'm still traveling in SE Asia and diving- and there is no way for me to return this shoddy bag to amazon.
Get a different bag from a different manufacturer.

This backpack is great! I bought it because I bicycle to and from work, and biking in the rain often causes the contents of my backpack to get wet. Moreover, biking to and from work (10 miles total) creates a lot of sweat in the summer months, which soaks into conventional backpacks and causes them to stink. Though the shoulder and back pads on this backpack are slightly absorbent; this backpack will be a lot easier to keep clean and non-stinky than a conventional bag. Moreover, it will be useful on any rainy hikes or canoe/kayak trips I decide to go on. And it will keep my stuff dry. Truly a worthy bag to have and use.
The material of this bag is a very sturdy rubbery material, even more sturdy than most high quality dry bags I have encountered in my years of (both recreational and even some professional) kayaking, canoeing, and diving. As a person who travels at night a lot, I was worried about overall visibility. The bag, however, has two large reflective strips on the back, and two smaller ones on the front, which all make you easy for cars to see at night--(and easier to fish out of a lake/river at night)--whenever those things happen.
This backpack has a monstrously extendable capacity. Because it is a dry bag, the top folds down easily to remove the bulkiness of the excess capacity when it's not in use. I was a little turned off by the outer pocket being see-through at first, for privacy reasons, but it has definitely grown on me and now I enjoy being able to see exactly what I remembered or forgot to bring in my backpack when I go to work in the morning (the transparency makes quick 'stuff' checks easy). It also has a nice adjustable elastic straps on the back which would be great for hiking, and a sturdy pocket for small items in the interior. All the straps (including the two buckles for the chest) are sturdy and well made.
Finally, this backpack looks very much like a 'conventional' backpack when rolled up and closed. Don't worry about getting any strange looks at meetings (or being 'teased' if you're a teenager) when walking around with this backpack. I got the black version and people generally haven't noticed the difference unless I've pointed it out to them.

After a few months of daily use, my only criticism on the handiwork is that the stitching that secures the zipper on the outside pocket to the bag is too thin and wears out quickly. This has caused the zippered pocket to pull away from the bag and hang open a little. I would put some strong glue and maybe some silicone across that seam when you receive the bag to keep it attached if you plan to use it heavily long-term. Everything else on the bag has held up very well.

After a few years of daily use, I have to say that the fabric on the bottom of the bag could really be more durable--a few holes have worn through the material over time at the bottom, meaning I can't store any small items in the main compartment any more without worrying about them falling out. The company which makes these bags should really fix this. I tried taping the holes up with duck tape but it would not stick.
Nevertheless, I still stand by a five star review because I'm very hard on stuff and I've used this bag roughly 5 days a week for a few years now. As a basic starter dry backpack that will work for the average commuter's needs at a reasonable price, this backpack really does deserve 5 stars and stands head and shoulders above others I've seen. The next level up would be more expensive and bulkier mid-range backpacks which honestly stick out too much to take to any sort of business meeting (business people seem to care about appearances and such). The level beyond that would professional courier bags with lifetime warranties, which, at literally ten times the price, are outside my price range. Thus, I'm probably going to buy a second one of these and donate the old one to someone who has the time and skill to do a bit of patchwork.

I bought a second one and am using it daily. Very happy. I took it to the nearby quarry the other day to test out it's waterproof-ness and it floated just fine all day next to me in my inner tube. (Oh yeah, they float by the way). They seem to have fixed the zipper problem by reinforcing the seam there a bit, but the bottom of the bag is still made out of material that is thinner than I would like. Still it feels even more durable than the last one. I look forward to several more years of heavy use.

It's rare to see products this well built and durable these days. Mine's been torture-tested by me for the last 4 years: I use it as an everyday bag, as a personal item when flying, and I've taken it on numerous dayhikes and camping trips, but you would never know. All of my other backpacks (that I use far more rarely) have shown wear, especially on the shoulder straps and the bottom of the pack, after a year or so. Everything on this pack looks as new as the day I bought it, except maybe a little dirtier, but I can't blame OverBoard for that ;). It's also quite comfortable, and the perfect size for a dayhike or bookbag. If this ever does fall apart (though I don't see that happening in the next 5 years), I'm going to buy the exact same bag.
Solid, waterproof, spacious, comfortable, heavy-ish

Pros: Completely water tight when rolled up properly. Solid construction, comfortable shoulder straps, very helpful chest strap. Zipper pocket inside for holding small items.
Cons: A bit heavy, but that can't be avoided with this material. More compartments on the inside would be helpful. Mostly it's a big black bag that you have to rummage through to find your stuff. The net pocket on the outside is primarily for looks, it's way too tight and non-stretchy to put anything into. The bungy straps on top of the mesh is somewhat useful, though.
I use this bag to hold odds and ends when I go walking in the rain with my young daughter.
Can't say enough good things.

Can't say enough great things about this pack. I took it on a hike through the Subway hike of Zion NP. There were plenty of waterfalls and lots of swimming. This pack was PERFECT! I could not list all the positives but I can honestly say there are NO negatives. The 20L was slight compared to the 30L of course but was plenty to fit a 30m rope, 2 pair of neoprene shorts, two pair of rappelling gloves, 2 climbing harnesses and 8 carabiners 2 belay devices and 2 microwave burritos! I submerged this pack several times and even threw it in to help a weaker swimmer get through a tough narrow swim. Very comfortable to wear and the outer zip pocket is awesome as it held my clif bars (4) and two water-resistant flashlights (small). The outer bungee was strong and held my wet harness after a couple of rappels and my waters shoes as well.
Planning on ordering another in a different color!

Update 2016: After three years of intermittent use for carrying groceries and keeping items dry riding to shore in the dinghy, several of the seam welds have parted in low-stress areas. We paid a lot for this backpack and have since purchased far less expensive packs that are not waterproof that carry 5 and 10 year warranties. The warranty on this backpack per Jay 706-955-0241 is only one year through the manufacturer for reasons exactly as we have experienced. It was nice while it lasted so I've docked one star from my original 5 star rating.
Original review from 2013:
We use this backpack to carry items to and from our sailboat home. We live aboard and cruise our boat and there are times that we anchor a good distance from the shore. We need something that will keep our stuff dry in all conditions and this bag is it. I love the size and the durability. It is a true dry bag with the added convenience of shoulder straps. If I had to name a complaint, it would be that they don't have the 30 L in more colors. We would have preferred a bright color instead of the black.
Buying Another!

This is an awesome pack. I use it for biking around town and keeping things out of the rain. Lots of storage and very rugged.
Will be buying another one to compete in the MR340 SUP race this August.
