Disappointed. Save your money!

Received this from my husband for Christmas because we love fondue, and its just the two of us eating dinner, so these looked fun and cute to do occasionally for a stay at home date night. They just DO NOT work. We tried them with all different size candles and tea lights, with a fan, with an open window (mind you its winter), and the longest we could keep a candle going was about 90 seconds. The design just doesn't work. Gave it two stars because the concept is cool, but doesn't work. Also one mug chipped when I hit it with spoon when we were trying to get it to work. So not only does the design not work, but cheap materials.

Exceeded expectations

My wife and I had been hemming and hawing for the better part of three years on the subject of fondue. We enjoy the occasional fondue and wanted some sort of at-home solution but were unwilling to commit to big, expensive fondue pots. The small chocolate fondue sets took up space and were often in too many pieces to keep track of in an overstuffed kitchen (bowl, stand, forks). So when I saw this product, I thought we'd give it a try.

First, let's talk about the one negative I encountered:
1. I was so eager to try this thing out that I immediately tossed some (high quality) chocolate into the bowl. I went digging around my kitchen for tea lights. Unfortunately, all I found were the slightly taller votive variety. No biggie, they fit inside. It should be good to go, right? If you use a taller tea light you will undoubtedly notice that the thing doesn't stay lit. It needs the shorter candle to allow for adequate air flow.

Other than that, let me tell you a little bit about the product. The bowl is (naturally) smaller than it would be in a regular mug of similar height to accomodate the little tea light hearth beneath. However, there is still plenty of space for contents. Two mugs, four forks included. This means that my wife can eat her zero sugar dark chocolate while I indulge in milk (real) chocolate. It's a beautiful thing.

I had always learned that you cannot melt cheese in tea lit fondue sets owing to a higher melting point than your average chocolate bar. I, however, was able to melt cheese. It was delicious. One thing you'll want to avoid is the temptation to put this thing in the microwave. I'm not saying that there is something wrong with the mug itself being in there. However, the microwave will cause your chocolate or cheese to separate into an unpleasant goo. Let the tea light do its thing, even if it takes a little longer.

When you're not using it as a fondue set, it is also a great mug. I crammed some biscotti into that little hearth because I wanted to feel like an innovator who found multiple uses for his fondue mug. In the end, I was just another idiot with biscotti crammed into his fondue-mug hearth.

If I never use the mugs again, they won't take up too much space in my cabinet. Even if I lose the fondue forks, I can still use the things. All in all, I can't think of a reason NOT to have these mugs around (except that my doctor seems to think I need to dip fewer things into chocolate and cheese).

Next up, I will use these for when company comes over. Two people can easily tag team a mug each. Though, I'm not sure how safe it is to get between me and melted cheese while I have a sharp fork.

Great product with a few caveats

These work very well, but I'd offer 2 pieces of advice:

First, realize what you're getting. These are the snack equivalent of a fondue meal. They don't make the cheese or chocolate 'hot', just very warm. In a lot of ways, this is better since you can heat up and snack on your foods more easily. Side note, I'd recommend liquid cheese like velveeta packets for the best cheese experience. Shredded cheese doesn't really melt right. Dipping chocolate melts perfectly though and didn't burn.

Second, remember how candles actually work. If you put a candle into an enclosed space, it will burn up all the oxygen and go out. For this reason, you need to have this mug in an area with air movement. A ceiling fan, an open window, an oscillating fan on the other side of the room...just something. If you keep it sitting in an area where no air can get to it (not much! it still just a tiny candle), you'll have trouble keeping it lit.

Hope this helps! It really is a very clever product and I am really glad I purchased it.

Amazing product!

This really was a GREAT product! It avoids all the hassles of a common fondue pot (the need to sit around, hard to reach, messy) and the personal portions definitely make it a more fun experience! It's designed perfectly, to accommodate a tealight candle, keep it lit, AND keep the cheese hot and bubbling for the entire time! Reviews of many other fondue pots cited this as a problem, and I am glad that this one didn't have it. The portion size is great too and the forks are convenient to use. I haven't tried putting it in the microwave or the dishwasher, nor would I recommend to try that.

I'm going to be buying additional sets of this fondue pot, so it can be used while hosting as well!
(On a related note, we used the Trader Joe's ready-to-eat cheese fondue - it was perfect!)

My daughter ordered these and I thought they would be fun at the lake

I have been looking for a gift for some friends when we visit them at their lake house. My daughter ordered these and I thought they would be fun at the lake. But then after reading the reviews, I was hesitant, since many said the candle does not stay lit. So, I decided to test out my daughter's before placing the order. After several failed attempts, I texted her to say it didn't work. She said the secret was to push the candle all the way to the back. Voila! No problem keeping the candle lit! We just used mini-chocolate chips and they worked perfectly. It doesn't seem to get hot enough, but you can't really go wrong with chocolate! I am going to place my order now!

Does not work!

I love the idea of personal fondue mugs, but the design of these products doesn't work! When the candle was placed in the area shown in the photo, there was not enough air flow and the candles would not stay lit! We tried a lot of different placements to see if we could increase airflow but we did not have much success and only placed the candled partially inside. The cheese did not melt with only the candle's flame and we had to reheat the cheese on the stove. These are so cute and such a great idea, but the design doesn't work!

Design flaws make this close to useless
by Fran Li (1 out of 5 stars)

The problem is the hole for the candle is small and there are no other air intake holes. Thus the candle struggles to stay lit, I've had to fan the thing for 10minutes to keep enough air flowing. -facepalm-

I also find the bottom to be set too low, this not only makes air flow a problem, it also makes the mug too hot for chocolate. The chocolate melts fast sure, but it's also getting burnt before we really have a chance to enjoy it.

Great but you'll need to find your own recipes.

I bought this for a white elephant gift and was pretty happy to walk away with it at the end of the night. I tried it for the first time yesterday with cheddar cheese and the only thing I noticed was that if you don't stir it, the cheese will burn. I'm assuming the same thing can happen with chocolate but I haven't tried yet. Also, I wish it came with a recipe booklet or something. Most of the recipes online call for multiple cheeses and as someone who isn't a great cook, scaling down can be a bit difficult for me.

Great Concept-With some revisions-Could be very nice

So disappointed-great concept, but everything burns in the cup-the flame is too close. Still I give it 2 stars because of what it could be. It'd be minus 2 otherwise.

I hope they do revise it and send me one so I can give 5 stars.

I love this product! All you need are these mugs, the little forks, and tea candles and your set! The chocolate took a few minutes to melt and i had to stir it every few seconds but once you do it once it becomes easier. I dipped marsh mellows in it and i loved it and so did the family. I would buy this product again and again!
