Product Description

Prevent messes with the OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Egg Separator. Simply hook the Egg Separator onto the side of a bowl and instantly have a perfect edge for cracking eggs. The base of the Separator catches runaway pieces of shell and prevents drips from running down the outside of the bowl onto your counter or table. This neat tool can also separate egg whites from yolks in one easy step. The Separator features two different ridges, allowing it to easily fit on thin-or thick-rimmed bowls, while the raised edge provides the perfect surface for neatly cracking eggs. The Separator's compact size makes it convenient to store and it is top-rack dishwasher safe.

Didn't work well, yolks slipped through slots.

Did not work well with chicken eggs...the yolks slipped through the slots along with the whites. Might work with duck eggs that have a larger yolk.

surprisingly bad for an OXO design
by Amazon Customer (2 out of 5 stars)

I'm really unimpressed and surprised that an OXO product worked so badly. I buy 'pastured' farm eggs so they vary in size from about a medium to a large. Maybe with chicken-factory XXL eggs this might work, but it was not as good as simply using the broken shell or hand methods for 'real' eggs that are variable in size. 1 of 3 yolks [tried 9 total] broke or even passed right through the slot, breaking on the way into the whites in the bowl below, ruining them for meringues or defeating the purpose of the separation process. 2 stars because it sat on a bowl OK and the 'cracking' ridge worked well, but for its intended purpose, it is a loser. I recommend you not get this one. Use your hands or the eggshell for a better chance of success. I've tossed it in the Goodwill box and will keep hunting...

Nice concept but not good for small eggs
by Ashley P. (3 out of 5 stars)

The concept and design of this egg separator with the lip to sit on a bowl is very nice, however if you are separating eggs that are not jumbo, extra large or maybe large look elsewhere. If you try to separate eggs that are not large the yolk will slide right out the slots with the white, often breaking the yolk making it impossible to even separate by hand after the fact. I have my own chickens and have to deal with eggs of all sizes, not just super market eggs. If you want to use this with pullet eggs, smaller-egg breeds like cochins or bantams look else where for a separator with smaller slots.

Not as useful as I wanted

I was excited to get this tool for separating egg whites and egg yolks but it does not stay level on the container and the yolks kept breaking and bleeding into the whites. Not worth the hassle

It won't separate the egg
by Clare (2 out of 5 stars)

The design is cute, but this is not a good tool for me. As the first time I used, the whole egg slipped into the bowl. It did not hold the yolk there. Then I tried couple times, the results were same. I don't know was the egg too small or not. Now, I just leave it in my kitchen drawer. Hopefully someday I will find the right size of egg to use with it.

Defective - Unfortunately!! :-(
by Dan W (1 out of 5 stars)

All my other OXO products are more useful due to their well-thought out design. It looks to me like the design of this egg separator was well-thought out, but the end product has a fatal flaw.

With another egg separator product (E--y), there isn't enough room for the egg white, which typically drips over the top edge, but the separation works well because the egg 'cup' is deeper.

With this OXO separator, there is more than enough room for the egg white, but not enough for the egg yolk. At the bottom of the separator is the small cup which is supposed to hold the egg yolk. But, it's much too small to hold the yolk of a typically large egg (I've tried about 30 eggs). With a too shallow cup, the yolk then breaks at the inner edges of the slot (the upper edge of the yolk's cup) and partially drains through the slots. This has happened to me with about 60% of the eggs I've tried to separate.

To me, this looks like a change was made to the design after it was initially tested (which I assume would have caught this issue), but then the redesign was not tested.

I'll look for an improved version 2, but at a 60% failure rate I can't use version 1.

I see some other reviews saying that it doesn't work well. An egg separator can only work so well. It can't be magic. Every now and then, a yolk might slip through a slot, or the egg whites might not separate easily and you have to shake it a bit, but *every* egg separator is going to have that issue. It's ridiculous to give this a bad rating for that when it would apply to *any* egg separator.
90% of the time, the egg whites strain through the three slits and the yolk stays cradled in the middle. That's as good as it's going to get for any egg separator. This separator is held in place on the rim of the bowl and has a nice edge to crack the egg on. It's the best one I've used. I bought three of them because I separate eggs every day and like having a clean one while I do the dishes with the other ones.

This OXO product is not a helper but a make the job harder and messier and more to clean up
by Darlaina Dancer (1 out of 5 stars)

Typically I love OXO but not in the case of their 3-in-1 egg separator. The cracker rim was nice but I really have plenty of things I can use to crack an egg upon and really in professional chef training they say to not break eggs on the edge of something but rather on a flat surface to avoid getting eggshell pieces in your egg. So then my yolk sits in the separator with some white in the bowl below but most of the white hanging from the yolk in the separator. I still had to use my fingers. This item made egg separation not only did not help but made it worse for me. There was more to clean up and I still ended up having to do the separating manually. I will never use this item again

I usually love OXO and have many of their products
by Gary R. Vineyard (1 out of 5 stars)

I usually love OXO and have many of their products, all of which I love, except this one. It just doesn't work. 75% of the yolks fall through as the white hangs below the cup. It is MUCH easier to use the tried and true method of just cracking the egg and separating the yolk...Even for the small price I'm returning it so they know...

Doesn't work.

The edges are too sharp and keep breaking the yolks. It has one job. Even after filing the edges down a little the success rate is about 5 out of 6 unbroken yolks. Separating by hand using egg shell halves is more effective.
