Don't buy - Great idea, but not trustworthy in the air.

What a great concept, so much is right about this product that I hated giving it two stars. The remote is amazing. The S version will be even better, but this one is fantastic. I have the H-107D FPV Quad as well, and LOVE IT! That one I give 5 stars. From that FPV experience decided to try the SpyHawk. I knew I could use the longer range remote that comes with the SkyHawk for the H-107D and that was a huge motivator as well. Unfortunately, as others have reported, the SpyHawk had issues right out of the box.

It was easy to assemble, so nearly RTF, but in the first pre-flight test, one of the aileron servos buzzed and failed to move smoothly and consistently. When I'd move the stick, the other one always moved as expected, but one stuck and moved only about 75% of the time correctly. I dismissed it as the "auto-pilot" making bad corrections and took it out for a first flight.

After reading others complain of the same thing, I wish I had read them prior. When I launched, it went into a spin immediately and my nose up control stance quickly turned into a nose down failure. It only went about 6 feet the first, and only, flight. I knew then that it wasn't the auto-pilot, it was a broken servo. Very disappointing. Fortunately, it was a very mild crash, no harm done, a tiny bit of grass stain on the nose. I do believe that this model would be durable and VERY repairable. I've have two other Styrofoam planes and even a hard crash which may cause extensive damage, still leaves them in a highly repairable state, I've had one nearly explode and managed to tape and glue it back together and be back in the air in less than an hour.

The SpyHawk is well built, easy to assemble and a great concept. I just got a lemon. And from the reviews and the comments of the guy at the hobby store, it seems that there are a lot of lemons. Amazon was WONDERFUL, so glad that is where I bought it!!! They let me look around locally to see if I could just buy the one wing (the servo comes pre-mounted on the wing) but it isn't available at Amazon or any of my local hobby shops. After talking to several, one of them warned me about the SpyHawk, that he knew the model and highly recommended I return it and get something else. He refused to sell them for the very reason I was calling about. They have a high failure rate. So with that in mind, I called Amazon again and they said I could send it back in non-sellable condition (You have to glue the tail together, so no way to get it back to new again) They even let me throw away the original box and use the larger Amazon box it came in to do the return. I cut the Styrofoam from the original box to allow me to fit the partially assembled plane (the main wings do still detach) in the large box for the return. They were as supportive as any seller could ever be. THAT is why I buy so many things from Amazon!!! They made a bad buying choice a minor hassle vs. a $350 mistake.

I immediately ordered the SeresRoad CXHOBBY CX-20 Professional, from Amazon, which was about the same price as the SpyHawk. I had to order some FPV parts to finish it off, so the price went up a bit, but I hope this will be a much smarter choice. I have 22 helicopters/quads and five planes, and I really like the quads. This will be my first non-tiny quad (The Hubsan H-107D is amazing btw!) and I'd recommend to anyone looking at this plane to go with a quad instead.

Again, I want to thank Amazon for being the best seller on the planet. This could have been a costly mistake, but it wasn't because I bought via Amazon. Five stars to Amazon!

Good VFR glider camera platform poor FPV unit.

The battery supplied is undersized. I replaced the 2 blade propeller with a 3 blade from a parkzone Mosquito. I purchased an EFlight 800mAH 2S battery which gives a good CG when installed in the battery compartment, some trimming of foam required. Puchase of a 3S 900mAH LiPO for the TX is advised. It will suck the life out of 8 AA cells in no time. Some adjustment of the RX board may be necessary for trim flight with stick trims neutral. While not absolutely necessary, not trimming the autopilot will leave you fighting the automation the entire flight. Do not fly if the TX indicates below 10.7 V, unless you just love to retrieve your glider from tree tops!

I can not believe it. It is very stable, easy to fly and strong. I crashed more than 15 times but it's still flying. With original battery I had 10 minutes flight. I bought 4 other 1000mah batteries and fly 20 minutes. I am living in Houston and we have strong wind here.

For first FPV experience I recommended it, but remember use trainer mode for first flight. I am using Spy Hawk on 2 big soccer filed, and the video transmitter acceptable. My longest flight range is 970 feet.

I love the idea that someone tried to make a built in FPV solution. However this is cheaply made. I wish they would make a solid version and charge more for it.

You have to do some minor assembly using glue. The foam on the tail section is not shaped well. When you glue the tail piece on it is not evenly horizontal but ends up slightly twisted. You could file/sand the body part before attaching to make it more horizontal.

The instructions said to hold the wings in with friction. On the first flight the wings pulled out in mid air and caused a nose dive. So i super glued the wings after that.

Its best to fly with zero wind. The motor does not supply alot of power.

For me personally, trying to fly by the camera using the built in screen wasn't very practical, Its just too small. It was better to just fly normal looking at the plane it self in the sky.

I also recommend putting a rubber band around the nose to hold the cockpit on. Its attached by small magnets and will fly off from the wind in flight.

Great but can be a little hard to build.

Awesome FPV but its pro price. Also I really wish it was RTF the gluing part really messed it up for me since I glued it the wrong way and on the second flight the wing fell off and broke both wings. But the camera is working and the engines are too! It can really take a beating as long as you can build it properly. I will wait for the SkyCruiser to come out. Its a little bit more expensive but a better buy for your buck!

This ready-to-fly . . . . wasn't!

I received this plane yesterday 2-3-14. It was received in great condition although the product's actual box looked smeared with dust. The plane was VERY easy to assemble. It was after I installed the batteries and powered up the plane and transmitter for a dry run that I learned a really good lesson: THOROUGHLY inspect everything that comes with whatever is shipped to you.
Why? On generally every rc transmitter BOTH of it's control sticks are supposed to move up/down and left/right freely. Mine did not. In this case, the left control stick would move left but wouldn't move past vertical to the right. Thus I wouldn't have been able to operate the rudder to the right on my Mode 2 transmitter. It likely would've at some point crashed because of this. I'm glad I never flew it because they might've accused ME of causing the damage, making my returning it more difficult.
BTW- I also learned that one cannot exchange an item bought on Amazon that was supplied by an outside provider. As many items on Amazon are sold. So if I want this plane, I'll have to buy another one again. (which probably won't be at Amazon!)

Almost Totally Awesome....UNTIL

Great plane! Took about 15 minutes to assemble with the help of a friend. I am 14, and so was my friend, so it proves it is an easy build. It should be listed as an ARF plane, but it has all the necessary tools to build it. Not a problem. I found myself getting about 15 minutes on the battery, have a 2x capacity battery, a bit bigger, but works better for the CFG. Took some damage, but still flied great. Notice that in winds, wings will "pop" off. It is not broken, just don't glue them together to the fuselage. Charges in less than an hour, and the transmitter works with any Hubsan product. I have an H107L, and it binds perfectly. There is a setting to go from Heli to Plane, and it takes less than 5 seconds. This TX does not suck battery like the H107D TX. It is definitely worth ~$250, unless you are willing to wait and spend $350 for the Sky Cruiser, which is definitely better, but both are still great. Love the Spy Hawk, and anyone who gives this a one star is wrong in my case. It is nearly perfect, just needs to be rebranded ARF instead of RTF

UPDATE:

I am returning it since it couldn't handle the wind. I thought I would enjoy this plane more, but it just didn't hold up. Over 90% of the landings were crashes and unintentional. This is definitely an indoor plane. I will be getting something else that will be more stable and stronger. If you have a big dome area to fly it in with no wind, it's perfect. Outside with even some wind, it can't handle it. To save yourself from often crashes, USE RUDDER!!!

DONT DO IT!!!

Thee biggest waste of money. If there is .00001 % chance of a gust of wind... you might as well stay inside. It cannot gain elevation and you will be to busy looking at the plane and trying to get it to actually fly then looking at the poorly lit and utterly poor quality screen.

SpyHawk VS Hawk Sky = Real review and final choice

Perfect for beginner enthusiast. I tried both the Hawk Sky and the SpyHawk. I crashed the Hawk Sky 10 times the first day, it was like riding a bike without training wheels. The Spyhawk stabilization system was the perfect training wheel.

Spyhawk performed great. Provided what I was looking for when I was deciding whether or not to make RC a hobby. Hope this helps others who have faced the same decision.
