Product Description

Back to the Roots is on a mission to undo food. In a college class, We learned mushrooms could grow entirely on spent coffee grounds. Brown Oyster mushrooms in just a few days
by Rombus42 (5 out of 5 stars)
October 7, 2017

The Back To The Roots mushroom kit produces very nice brown oyster mushrooms within a few days of rehydrating the substrate. Since hydration is the primary limiting factor for producing good flushes from kits, it is recommended by this grower that you remove the substrate completely from the mycobag, then submerge the substrate block overnight in clean, cold water. The next morning, drain the substrate block, pat it dry with paper towels, then return it to the bag and fruit as normal. My kit produced 160g of fresh mushrooms on the first flush, and about half that on the second flush.

Once your kit has exhausted itself, (e.g. after the second or third flush), the substrate can be crumbled up and used to inoculate another substrate of your choosing, e.g. straw, coffee grounds, cardboard, cotton cloth, hardwood sawdust from stove pellets, or a combination of these and/or other materials. This variety is both an agressive colonizer and prolific fruiter. Expect approximately 30 days between innnoculation and harvest. Here are some cluster maturing on 20lbs of pasturized wheat straw. Growing on bulk substrate tends to produce larger flushes and larger individual mushrooms than growing from a kit, (examples of both below).

An excellent product ,from a Company with integrity
by Justin (5 out of 5 stars)

Great product be it for a fun one-off project, or as the beginning material for a mushroom farm of your own, My recommendation of this product extends beyond the quality of the product itself, but in just how much this company stands behind its products. I have been slowly building up my stock for growing mushrooms for local-area sales business. When I found a lot of these at a local discount grocery chain at an extremely good price I figured realistically that even if half of the boxes turned out to be duds, I was still ahead so I went ahead and purchased everything the store had left on the shelf, After taking home and preparing according to the directions on the box, I set them on the shelves of my grow-room, Wow, have I been amazed at how quickly these guys have produced, and nice large clusters ranging from .25-.5lb per box., I had pinning on over half of the kits within 4 days, and full pinning on the rest within the next week, The only failures I had out of the entire 30 boxes I purchased were 3 kits , which produced a different, fruiting body that I didn't recognize, not only was Back to the Roots extremely courteous and friendly, they were also happy to help and identify the contaminant, they were also kind enough to replace all three kits! This is the part that impresses me the most about this company, just how dedicated they are their product that they stand behind it 100% I would definitely recommend one of these kits as a fun entry into how mushrooms are grown. Once again, a big thank you to the staff and crew at Back to the Roots , for operating how I wish a great many other companies should be conducting their businesses

Takes out the hard parts of growing mushrooms
by B.T.S. (5 out of 5 stars)
October 11, 2017

I've bought and used a few of these kits and had success each time. I personally like to grow both side at once. This requires soaking for 6-8 hours, then turning over and soaking another 6-8. Spraying twice a day is more of a minimum, I sprayed several times a day to keep the growing area moist. The mushrooms will grow on the edges of the mycellium where you scrape it. So scrape small spots but make a lot of them. Leave about 50/50 scraped vs. un-scraped. If you want to grow one side at a time, you need to wait a few weeks before you grow the other side. Put the kit somewhere cool and dark while the mycellium heals. Then soak again and start the process over.

I make mushroom tacos with my harvests, but I use a seasoning mix I make myself instead of the recipe on the mushroom kit. Topped with fresh cilantro and corn salsa... they're delicious!

I didn't get a plethora of mushrooms like the super happy girl on the box and it ...

Well, I didn't get a plethora of mushrooms like the super happy girl on the box and it took a more than 10 days BUT I did get the HUGE sucker of a mushroom which I really enjoy. Come on, it's ginormous & it just popped up overnight (it seems). So, 3 stars for the giant mushroom. I'm going to finally pop it off tomorrow and cook it - I suspect it'll be delicious - and see if anymore appear since I'm used to the box on my counter now anyways.

Fun Prime Day impulse buy, but wouldn't buy again.

Fresh, clean, beautiful mushrooms!
by Suzie (5 out of 5 stars)

I was afraid to buy this-not because of the product- but because I would be the one to grow them.

The package contains a brick of material (about the same size as a real brick) along with a spritzer bottle and even a packet of heirloom tomato seeds to use after the mushrooms are done.

I followed the simple instructions -soak the brick in water, then cut a slit in the shape of a big "X" in the plastic covering. Put it back in the box it came in, and spritz with water 2x a day. (You can do this twice- turn the brick around after harvesting the first batch and repeat.)

In just a few days I saw them start to sprout and then they grew like crazy! I included some pics to show the process. Once you see them stop growing they are ready to harvest. I had a much bigger yield than I anticipated - I had a hard time getting them into a quart size baggie.

I just started the second batch, then I will try my luck with the tomatoes. (If only I could find the same process for morel mushrooms!) If I can grow these, ANYONE can!

I'm going to slice them, coat in flour, with just salt & pepper, then sauté in butter and either peanut or olive oil. I like to have a cruncy outer crust with a firm but moist inside. Mmmm..

This kit is great for any mushroom lover, but would be super for kids to do.

I want to see what other products they have. Nothing better than being able to grow your own food- fresh, taste, and satisfaction.

Update!

I made these little beauties as I mentioned above, and I couldn't stop eating them. Delicious, superb, amazing. I'm going to order some more and plan a dinner party around their harvesting time. How cool to watch part of your dinner be prepared right in front of you, with mushrooms that are literally seconds old! I included a new pic of my prepared 'shrooms!

Very disappointed - nothing grew when the box was opened and watered
by anonymous 2 (1 out of 5 stars)
February 2, 2018

Purchased in mid January 2018 for my mom's bay in Mid Feb. TODAY (Feb 2),we discovered it started growing and burst out of the box. Going to gift it anyway, that'll be neat when she opens it.
==== Update 3-12-2018 === gave to my mom and they didn't grow. This woman is a green thumb and can make pretty much anything grow. But she says Nothing is working. VERY Disappointed. 1st it starts growing (without box being opened or water being provided) and bursts its box... 2) when water is finally applied... nothing happens.

Very Disappointed

Great buy! Stick to directions and you will be happy!

This is such an awesome purchase!! I read the reviews and evwn though there were a couple negative ones I decided to give it a try. I bought it as a lightning deal and am super happy I did. I received it Monday, and that night I figured if start it off. I soaked it overnight like the directions tell you to, if you follow them you will get the desired outcome. So I soaked Monday and Tuesday morning I dried it, stuck it back in the box and placed it next to a window, but the curtain being drawn so it didn't get too much sunlight. I've sprayed it daily since then and here on Sunday, 5 days after I already have a beautiful batch of gorgeous looking baby mushrooms. I have been taking photos as the days have gone by and will continue up until I'm ready to harvest. I will update this review in a couple days with more pictures as my mushrooms continue to grow. Hope this is helpful for the next. You won't be dissapointed, at least with the larger box. I bought the large box instead of the small. Will most likely buy this again and will also check out other products from these guys!

Fun but disappointing
by GSA913 (1 out of 5 stars)

This product provides a VERY exciting concept and would be lots of fun to use except for some issues. The first side (harvest) worked fairly well despite a much lower yield than expected, however when it came to the second side, it was a complete failure. I have grown mushrooms before and I would say i'm rather experienced with this but regardless I followed the instructions exactly. I was surprised at the results given the products reviews, so i assume i got unlucky and received one that wasn't stored properly. I don't often give one star reviews but considering the price of this product the consumer is paying for the grow experience rather than just the final product, and unfortunately we didn't get to experience much of either.

Mushroom Farm a Fun and Educational Experience
by D. Gagnon (5 out of 5 stars)
May 6, 2017

I purchased the Mushroom Farm in order to have the experience of growing mushrooms in the house. Previously I grew both Shiitake and Oyster mushroom on inoculated wood that was kept in our woods during the summer months. I wanted to see how companies were bringing the same experience into home for both adults and kids to experience.

The directions were clear and easy to follow, and "wala" I had mushrooms spawning in less than ten days. The "first crop" of mushrooms have been harvested and consumed. They tasted better than the Oyster mushrooms I grew previously in the woods.

I am again soaking the boxes (I purchased two farms) so that another crop can be produced. I learned that the record is 10 crops from one farm, so my goal is to exceed the existing record of 10 crops.

I strongly recommend the purchase of a mushroom farm. The learning experience and the anticipation of growth on a daily basis is worth the expenditure plus you get to eat your experience!

Perfect choice for mushroom enthusiast who does not want to learn the science of growing mushrooms a
by Giovanni T. (5 out of 5 stars)
July 3, 2015

It works! Be patient. In my case, the mushrooms appeared on day 7. Oyster mushrooms, in my opinion, have the best taste, very potent and clean flavor. They are perfect for soups, sauces, and sauté well with other veggies and meats. There's no earthy taste to them at all. A word of caution, when ready to harvest, collect the entire batch. I made a mistake of cutting three mushrooms only, leaving the rest until the next day. Unfortunately, the bunch dried out completely over night. They were bone dry and hard. When I tried to get them going again by using the back of the package, I had no luck. Overall, a decent product,my it it does need more clear instructions.

Sept 13, 2015 Update

Well, I decided to give Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Farm another chance. I'm glad I did. First off, to my surprise it took this second mushroom farm almost two weeks (12-13 days) to start producing. Patience is a key here. I almost gave up on it and actually stopped watering the soil for two days, thinking I must have made a mistake somewhere. However, when I got home one night, I was excited to see tiny mushroom heads which made their way through to the soil top. The tiny farm works, no doubt about it. You will love the taste and the texture of these oyster mushrooms.

Here's where this product shines the most.

The company that created this product stands behind their work 100%. The community happiness team (*I absolutely love the term) is exceptional when it comes to customer service and they will make sure you are absolutely satisfied with the product. You don't see that very often these days. For example, they contacted me directly based on my less-than-excellent experience with the product the first time I tried it. Naturally, I had quite a few questions about my experience with the farm. Here's the conversation below. Make sure to read it, it will help you with your farm as well.
1. Can you please let me know if both sides of the box can be used to grow mushrooms simultaneously, or is it designed to have the harvest from one side of the box only? How many times can the process be repeated?

Response: You can use both sides of the box but we recommend just growing one side at a time. We guarantee two harvests from each box, but it's possible to get more so we always encourage folks to keep trying! I am currently growing a box and on my second harvest, using the same side that I grew my first on. It doesn't matter which side you grow on, though. Just note -- once you open the second side (cut the '+' and such) then your kit will be exposed to more oxygen, meaning it can dry out faster. So you will need to give it more water (you really can't overwater the mushrooms so be generous!). That's why I always grow the first two harvests from the same side and then I might open up the second side and try to grow from there. The mushrooms can still grow from any side, though, so be sure to water both and keep it really hydrated. Also, I always give the kit a break by letting it rest for a few weeks in between grows.
2. I kept my box on the counter, even after the mushrooms died, but kept spraying it with water. After a few days, the white substance began growing rapidly and covered the "soil" again. Are these spores? The white, dust-like substance also covered a substantial portion of the kitchen counter and I had to wipe it every morning. It was interesting to see..

Response: The white 'dust' is spores. Actually that is a great sign. That means your mushroom kit is full of spores and will most definitely grow again! So if you still have this kit I recommend you try to grow it once more. The white layer is mushroom by-product. If it grows back, try scoring the surface with a knife or fork and then re-soak the bag for 1 day. Afterwards, you'll want to give your kit lots of water.

You can even try using a humidity tent to increase moisture.

Re-soak your kit overnight fully submerged in water.

Cover the kit with a Ziploc or other plastic bag and cut some holes in it for airflow.

Spray/drizzle water underneath it everyday.

The additional moisture should help boost your kit out of the dormant state and you should see growth in approx. 7 days.

Additional information about mushroom growth:

Mushrooms love fresh air, so placing your kit next to an open window can really encourage the mushrooms to grow.

Oyster mushrooms like light. Place your mushroom kit in a bright area-- filtered light is best.

Moisture is extremely important. You can tell if your kit is getting enough water because you will be able to see visible drops of moisture trapped beneath the plastic flaps. The more water the better; don't be afraid of over-watering your mushroom kit.

Keep the plastic in-tact. Again, this has to do with moisture. The plastic helps trap in moisture so you don't want to remove it.

As you see, the team is committed to making your experience with this little mushroom farm excellent. You will fall in love with the product, I guarantee it. Also, let me know if this review was helpful to you. Your opinion mattes!
