About the LuminAID Light: The LuminAID light is a solar-powered, inflatable lamp that packs flat and inflates to create a lightweight, waterproof lantern. The LuminAID light provides up to 16 hours of LED light and recharges in approximately 7 hours of direct sunlight. The LuminAID light is ideal for emergency use, camping, or in the home as an extra light source. Tuck it away in a first-aid kit or hook it on your backpack to take with you on your next adventure. The product is completely PVC-free and made out of a lightweight, semi-transparent material to diffuse the LED light and create a lantern effect. About the Company: The LuminAID light was designed by two design students, Andrea Sreshta and Anna Stork, shortly after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. When thinking about what they could design to make a difference, Andrea and Anna decided to focus on lighting because it had the potential to greatly improve the comfort, safety and survival of disaster victims. Inspired to design a simple, solar-powered lighting product that could be easily distributed in times of emergency, they developed the LuminAID light and founded LuminAID Lab to bring the technology to market. The product has been featured on the Today Show, Fox News, CNN, and in many print publications. The solar-led-inflatable technology is Patent Pending worldwide. About LuminAID's Give Light, Get Light Program: LuminAID Lab partners with organizations all over the world to distribute lights to individuals without access to electricity through their Give Light Program. The company has also worked to put lights on the ground after emergency situations both in the US and abroad. With the support of customers and partner organizations, LuminAID Lab has distributed thousands of lights all around the world to individuals in need of a better source of light. Loving my LuminAID!
by Lani Colley (5 out of 5 stars)

This little invention is AWESOME. No, I haven't yet had a chance to take it out camping and truly use it to its full extent. However, I have run all around my house with it and I love it. I love the idea of it, the usefulness of it, the compactness of it, the design team and rationale behind it, and that these are so simple. So the design team idea behind this was to create cheap and quick light in the wake of national disasters (I believe I read that right in the article). This solar-powered light packs to a shape the size of the panel in the picture (the solar panel and bright white part with the logo). The rest of the inflatable bag folds behind it and is secured with a tab, making it very easy to transport. Once inflated (which you pinch to inflate and when not pinched, it does not lose all its air), it's easy to hang and the space makes a brighter "bulb" to reflect light. I hung them in my dining room to catch light through a sliding door and then slung them over the backs of the chair. Up close, I could read by their light in the dark room, so they are useful for doing tasks close to it. Because they are so bright, they cast dark shadows, so doing tasks farther away was easy, but reading was harder. I also like that you can turn it on and off. I didn't do a stringent test but it seemed these charged well in somewhat ambient light. However, more testing would be required on that.

I would buy these again in a heartbeat, and I plan to use these for camping. I love my headlamps but get paranoid about using battery power. These would make GREAT stocking stuffers for anyone concerned about a bug-out bag or zombie apocalypse-sort of thing.

Great light...

Great product...in my bug-out/emergency bag. Solar light works inflated as an area light...or as a task light when kept folded. Excellent design and operates exactly as described.

Excellent idea but, sadly, a lemon
by Dr. Lil (2 out of 5 stars)

In 2 different countries, across 4 different well-educated individuals, we could not get this item to work, at all.

Unfortunately, even though it was outside in bright, clear sunshine for well over the directed 10+ hrs., the red "charging" light never switched to green (or "charged"), as it should have.

Additionally, the nozzle for inflating the device is very difficult to use; a very strong, professional landscaper was the only one who could get it to work by biting on the nozzle, which is an alternate direction in the instructions. Not easy.

Bottom line: we never got this product to work, which is a sad disappointment (loss of time, effort + money).

A great backup option!
by Nathan (5 out of 5 stars)

Genius! I bought this LuminAid Solar Inflatable Light for a camping trip to have as a back up just in case my battery powered options failed us. I ended up using this more just to save battery and because it was easy to hook on to my bags when we went hiking (or leave hooked on the tent) to charge up during the day. The two options of dim and bright are helpful and even on dim it's possible to sit a few feet away and read a book. Not sure about the use for a pillow as others have commented on - I'd be afraid it would burst with that much pressure, but it's definitely worth getting if you are camping or even just as a backup emergency light for those power outages.

Brilliant!

This is so cool! I love how compact this light becomes, making it really easy to add to a camping pack! The light is super bright as well, even the dim setting is fairly bright. I waited until nighttime to try it, turned off all electronic devices, and all the lights. In terms of brilliance, this inflatable light is quite bright and lit up the entirety of my living room AND my dining room. It is much brighter than your average flashlight, illumination appears to be similar to a lantern, although with a larger range. I plan on purchasing several more to put in my car, and in my camp gear so that I never am without a light, even in an emergency. (It took me a minute to figure out where to pinch in order to inflate, but once I found the spot it inflated in under 2 minutes---when it was time to deflate I simply pinched the same spot and applied very little pressure to the light and it deflated in under 2 minutes. Perfect for when time is of the essence!)

What a fabulous product and I loved watching the story behind it on shark tank
by Leah G (4 out of 5 stars)

What a fabulous product and I loved watching the story behind it on shark tank. I bought a few of these last year, have one in my car, one in my apartment and one I take with me on trips. I've used it many, many times, and the product always amazes me! I've taken it camping and just last week took it to Dominican Republic and used it while sitting out on the porch (the light was broken, this worked beautifully). I'm giving this a 4 stars only because as it was recharging last week (while still in DR) the bag somehow developed a hole! I left it on the table, in direct sunlight, and when I came back - seems like it expanded in the heat and created a hole along the seam. I definitely didn't over inflate the bag, i've done it many times. Kind of bummed it malfunctioned in less than a year. Hoping my other ones are more durable than that! Otherwise, great product, just bummed i'm down one.

Low weight, low cost light
by Carlos (5 out of 5 stars)

This is my second order of the LuminAID. I have only used the original ones twice but they worked really well. They produce a nice soft light. They work great for backpacking when it is pitch black out. Two of them provided decent light to hang around camp. They work well in the tent as well but you have to figure out how to position it to get the best light. The side without the solar panel emmits the most light, so try to focus the in the direction.

They charged up very well too. You have to hit the button until you see the red light to make sure it is charging. I used them for two days and I am not even sure I needed to charge them. The ran for about 4 hours each night with no issues.

I didn't notice a drastic difference between the low and high setting but I noticed the change.

I can't speak to their durability but I think as long as I don't drag them or sit on them they will be fine.

These would be good for camping backpacking, emergency kits, bug out bags, etc.

Low weight, low cost, and no batteries make these a good buy.

Bright enough for most tasks
by Josh (5 out of 5 stars)

This puts off quite a bit of light for it's size and weight. Only downside to me is the bag seems like with enough bouncing and abrasion it could leak. But it weighs next to nothing!.. For the weight you are not going to get something bulletproof.

For those backpackers who count every ounce, you know the guys who cut the ends off of toothbrushes, leave half of their tent accessories at home, upgrade to titanium everything, etc. all in the name of shaving some ounces off your pack weight..... you know who you guys are...... you should give this serious consideration. You can light up camp and definitely fully illuminte your tent interior. To me it actually felt lighter than my headlamp.

The part about it being waterproof and that you can actually float it is just a cool bonus.

Considering that i paid less for this than most headlamps, I can live with the possibility of replacing it is the bag ever gets ripped up. I think the fact that this is rechargable will pay for it in just the cost of batteries you would normally buy if you have heavy light usage needs.

Pros:

Weight

illumination

environmental friendly (rechargable)

waterproof

floats

Cons:

Inflatable bag thickness

Great concept, great light!
by C. J. Gerhardt (5 out of 5 stars)

Works very well and seems to be something that could last a while... if taken care of. The material that the light is covered in is similar to the material that inflatable pool toys are made of. It provides a bright light in the dark and is simple to recharge in the sunlight. It packs away with a small footprint and is very light. The idea that it needs no batteries is so very appealing. I will try to come back a year or so from now and update once we've had a chance to out it through its paces. The wife and I have our eye on hiking the John Muir Trail in the next couple of years... this light will be making the trip with us!

Great product!

I purchased 2 of these after a recommendation from a friend in Peace Corp. We fully expected them to be a short-lived novelty item around the campsite. Four years later, both still work great. They have been camping in the Utah desert, floating down the local river, hanging in a tree at the state park, and their permanent residence is in off grid tiny house. They have been loaned out and returned many times.
