I hate, Hate, HATE this Bowl !!!!!
by Alex Mcphail (5 out of 5 stars)

I hate, Hate, HATE this bowl !!!!!! I used to be able to wolf my dinner down in 20 seconds flat. BANG! and it was gone. So what I went to the vet once or twice for bloat - who cares! Ize like to eat, and Ize like to eat fast.

Now with this 60's retro psychedelic shaped safety orange dish, I have to work to get every piece of kibble. It takes me 10 minutes now to eat a 20 second dinner. Its downright humiliating. The shame - oh, the shame!

Hmmm. Come to think about it, I haven't been to the vet for a while. Phhhhhht. Just coincidence, I'm sure.

Be careful buying this bowl.

I wish I could give this product a zero and I hope that this review helps somebody else. I first started noticing a large gash at the bridge of my dog's nose. The first I thought it was because she had hit it going under the bed. My husband said he wondered if it was from this dog bowl. So, I took it away and used her old one for a few days. Sure enough, it immediately started to heal up. Out of curiosity I gave it to her one more time (sorry I did) and sure enough her nose was injured again from trying to get down to get to her food. The raised ridges cause a large sore spot on her nose. So, be careful with this bowl I have thrown mine away and her nose is almost back to normal.

Excellent bowls to make dogs eat more slowly and provide some mental stimulation when eating
by Rachel (5 out of 5 stars)

These dog bowls are amazing! This version has larger spaces so it's easier for my dog to get the food than in the spiral and the flower shape one but for a dog with a large snout or bit tongue this is still effective. My smaller dog (45lb) doesn't get much of a challenge with this shape, but the larger one does. My dogs had gotten in to a competitive eating thing all of a sudden and the younger (4year old) and much bigger one (80lb ridgeback) started eating so fast she vomited every meal. I bought these to force her to slow down. I got three different shapes so I could switch them out to keep eating a challenge which is good mental stimulation for dogs. This completely solved the easing too fast problem. Both dogs adapted easily to using them. These were well worth the money. These bowls do make them drool more when eating but I just throw them in the dishwasher regularly and that takes care of the cleaning.

Not for clever dogs
by Chris Miller (3 out of 5 stars)

My dog Bruno was able to figure out the flaw in this design on the very same day we received this dog food bowl. See the video for details.

Unfortunately, we were only able to use this bowl for a little over 3 months, as Bruno passed away in August 2014, so I can't comment on it's durability. I was planning on drilling a hole in the center, and screwing it to a piece of plywood that he'd have to put his front paws on in order to get to the food. This would have prevented him from lifting the bowl.

UPDATE 12/2016:

We have another dog, Cuda, who is approximately the same size that Bruno was (80+lb Pit Bull mix). He's 2 years old, and has been using this bowl for the past 6 months. It slows his eating considerably. The bowl is difficult to wash by hand, but comes out clean if put through the dish washer, although it takes up a lot of space in there. Cuda hasn't yet figured out how to flip over the bowl, but he doesn't have the voracious appetite and impatience that Bruno had, either. I guess that was probably more polite than saying he's not as clever.

Fantastic! Does exactly what I needed it to do.

In case you are wondering - this size (large) will hold 4 cups of dry dog food. I couldn't find that answer anywhere so I bought the big one. I would have bough the smaller one if I knew that.

Best way to slow down a fast eater
by Brock M (5 out of 5 stars)
July 15, 2016

Update 9/1/2016:

I have been using this feeder for a few months now and still love it! My puppy has yet to tip it over or spill it and it still continues to slow his eating down. It can get gross sometimes with his slobber after he is done eating but I can give it a quick rinse. Cleaning with the sponge wand I use is a little tough to get in all the divots, but I throw it in the dishwasher every now and then to give it a full cleaning.

Original Review:

I have a 6 month old puppy and he absolutely loves food. He literally will sit there licking his lips when I am pouring his food for him and is the most excited I've ever seen him. He also scarfs down the food as fast as possible which can lead to Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus. I did have a few solutions before trying out this bowl, but the bowl has been the best so far.

Previous Solutions:

My first attempt to slow down my puppy's eating was to add rubber Kong toys to his food bowl so that he would have to eat around them. This worked a little bit and did slow him down; but not very much. My next idea was to turn the food bowl upside down and pour the food in the bottom of the bowl (the bottom of the bowl had a canyon-like shape around the edges). This worked much better than the Kongs and actually slowed him down quite a bit. I had been using the upside-down bowl method for several months but finally decided to try out a bowl designed for slowing down eating. This bowl worked much better than the upside-down bowl and significantly slowed down my dogs eating. He constantly comes up for air and has to strategically plan where to eat next.

Quality:

The bowl is made with your typical, heavy-duty BPA free plastic and has a very solid feel to it. It is dishwasher safe, which is great, because cleaning this bowl with a sponge is much more difficult due to the walls.

Overall this is a great bowl if you want to slow down your dog's eating! The picture I attached that shows the bowl with food has 1 cup of food in it. There is room for a little more food, but the listing advertises it can hold 2 cups which may be a little much. 2 cups would likely have the food to the brim. This isn't an issue for me since my dog gets 1 cup per meal so it works out great. So far I have not had the issue that other reviewer's stated where their dog learned to turn the bowl upside-down to get all the food out. I did notice that once my dog finished the food, he was sniffing for more and attempted to pick it up with his teeth. I took the bowl away immediately and now keep it off the floor when not being fed so he doesn't learn to flip it over.

Writing in-depth reviews to help other shoppers has become a hobby of mine. I hope you found this review to be helpful! Also, feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them for you!

The Best!

Our puggle Ike, he's been gulping his food down since he was 8 weeks old. We also found, when we doggie sat another puppy, Ike, at 12 weeks old was also food agressive. I guess, in Ike's mind, he was competing for food with our temporary puppy guest, so he started gulping his food down even faster! Thankfully we were able to stop Ike's food aggression a long time ago, but in the 7 years we've had our puggle, we haven't been able to get him to slow down his eating, at least not until now!

It used to take Ike maybe 30 seconds to gulp down 3/4 cup of food out of a regular bowl, & then he'd go back & repeatedly lick out that empty bowl two or three more times. I guess he needed to make sure he truly didn't miss any of his kibble, lol? Well, with these Slow Feeder Bowls, Ike now takes about 8 minutes to eat his food, & he doesn't go back for second & third empty bowl licks either!

Initially our puggle didn't like the bowls, but he's accepted them now, & now he's not gulping too much air when he eats, which means he also doesn't burp or pass as much gas either! And most importantly, he hasn't thrown up at all since we've been feeding him out of the slow feeder bowls.

The only down side to the bowls is if you have a smart dog, one that turns genius where/when food is concerned like our puggle Ike! A dog who says hey, I got this! Look mom, this challenge is too easy-peasy, bark-kahahaha! See, all I had to do is tip my bowl over & spill the dog food out on the floor, bark-kahahaha!

Well, our smarty pants puggle's victory was short lived, because to stop my little bowl tipper, this is what I did: first I duct taped a 10 pound dumbbell weight to the bottom of the bowl, but when washing the bowls, the duct tape proved to be too difficult to remove, so I switched to ordinary Scotch tape instead. And I used a 10 pound weight, because it happened to be the same diameter as the bottom of the bowls. You just need secure to the bowl something too heavy for your dog to pick up &/or move.

We've been using these bowls, problem free, for several months now, & they're great! They do exactly what they claim to do!

FYI: I purchased the orange & teal bowls for variety, but after much searching, I learned the three colors of the bowls means they're different levels of difficulty too.
1.) The purple bowl is the easiest ___challenge.
2.) The teal bowl is the medium ___challenge
3.) And the orange bowl is the most ___challenging.

Works well for 3 different dogs. Very stable.
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

Worked so well for our one dog (who otherwise inhales her cup of food in 27 seconds flat), that we ended up getting 2 more for the other 2 medium-size (35-45 lb) dogs in our household. It has worked wonderfully for all 3, who have different snouts/jaws - including the short, thick pitbull's mouth. They all figure out a way to get every single piece of kibble out - and all 3 seem to really enjoy the time spent, and each one has her own "system". See video/pic. It has plenty more room to spare and should be great for large breeds too.

If the design looks too complicated: it's not.

Best feature: the built-in, non-skid phalanges that make the bowl extremely stable, whether on wood or tile floor, it stays still. They lie flat and are part of the molded base. Even the clumsy and overly-vigorous eaters can't knock the bowl around. We returned a different brand that had small, rubber inserts into holes on bottom of bowl - they fell out just moving bowl around from counter to floor.

Has been easy to clean with quick rinses. Have only used dry food in it though.

Started with the Large. Now using Small.
by Dimples (5 out of 5 stars)
June 27, 2018

I bought the teal (concentric circles) and the pink (flower-ish) in the large size for my golden retriever when she was a puppy. She ate quickly and these slowed her down considerably. Time to finish went from 30 seconds to over 2 minutes.

LARGE is an understatement. It's 12 inches across and is annoying to store/pack/wash.

The teal is deeper than the pink. Neither one fits in my dishwasher without taking up an exorbitant amount of space.

The bowls are now 2 years old and need to be replaced so I decided to order the smaller size to see if it would still slow her down enough, while also being easier to store and wash.

SMALL is perfect for my dog. She eats between 1 and 1.5 cups of food at each meal and it fits in the small size bowl just fine. I can also store the bowl inside the food bin if I want to. It's smaller so there's less to wash by hand but it's no easier, however it takes up a lot less room in the dishwasher.

I've attached a picture of both sizes with the same amount of food in them.

This might be fine, a FULL FIVE STAR
by Dean (3 out of 5 stars)
November 1, 2016

This might be fine, a FULL FIVE STAR, for the right dog, it might be a 1 STAR for another dog, and it's NOT the seller's fault. The buyer needs to carefully pair these dishes and their slots and grooves and depths and area for meeting the needs of the dog. Each dog not only has a size and food volume need, but they have different facial shapes like the extreme flatness of a Chinese Pug, to the long pointy nose of a Dachshunds Dogs also have different tong lengths, and even over-bite and under-bite issues.

In the case of the dog I was buying for this particular was a bad match-up, so I had to return it. To avoid such returns and re-buys read the reviews and see from owner experience what dog size they say "each dish" did and didn't work with. I ended up with another dish-type a couple of months later for my Yorkies, this dish was not suitable for Yorkies.

Some dog owner reviews found some of the dishes a good fit (head-shape and access-wise) but noted after about a week that their dogs were developing sores or abrasions they'd never had before. Also some other owners found places on the dish being abraded by the dog, and that would be bad for both dog and dish.

As a buyer if you read (a lot of reading) you will be able to find the right dish the first time and avoid returns for you and the seller, and also get your dog's fast eating slowed sooner. Pick the dish carefully, better to wait, or hand-feed than to risk sores or other problems.
