edge-1000

Whether you are riding to improve your own personal best or see where you stand against the pros, Edge 1000 lets you connect, compare and compete. Turn every ride into a race by competing on Garmin Connect segments and seeing real-time results on your Edge, including alerts for segment start and finish and leaderboard rankings. The segments feature keeps you motivated and helps you push for continual improvement.

Own the Road

Along with in-ride challenges and connected features, Edge 1000 offers advanced bike-specific navigation and mapping capabilities. The preloaded Garmin Cycle Map includes OSM (Open Street Map) content with routable road and bike paths, elevation data, points of interest and address search. Mapping data is stored onboard the Edge, so your access to navigation and performance capabilities isn’t dependent on cell coverage, and map updates are free.

Know Where to Go

Now you can explore more, on and off road, thanks to this device’s round-trip routing feature. Simply enter how far you want to ride, and Edge 1000 calculates up to 3 cycling-friendly routes. You can even review the elevation profiles before making your selection. It also offers a new route planner capability that allows you to create routes directly on the Edge 1000 using the map, POI and segments you’ve downloaded from Garmin Connect. Again, you can preview the elevation profile of your custom route before you roll. If you do get off course or want to end your ride sooner, Edge can always guide you back to start or calculate the most direct route and provide turn-by-turn directions to get you back.

At Your Finger Tips

At Your Fingertips

Edge 1000 features a 3-inch high-resolution color touchscreen display with dual orientation. It has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the screen brightness to changing light conditions to improve visibility. Unlike your smartphone, the display is optimized to work with gloves and in the rain³. You can customize your training pages with up to 10 data fields and use activity profiles to allow for easy transitions when you switch cycling activity, such as road, mountain or touring.

Advanced Performance Analysis

Edge 1000 is compatible with ANT+™ sensors, including speed, cadence, heart rate and compatible weight scale. It’s the first Garmin bike computer that integrates with Shimano Di2 electronic shifting systems4 to display your current gear on the screen. Edge 1000 is also compatible with ANT+ power meters, including Vector™, our unique pedal-based power meter that measures total power, left/right balance and cadence. A preloaded power-based workout on Edge 1000 allows you to calculate your functional threshold power (FTP), from which you can base your power training zones. The 1000 offers a training calendar and is compatible with advanced workouts, which you can plan, schedule and upload from Garmin Connect.

Smartphone Connectivity

When paired with your smartphone and the Garmin Connect™ Mobile app, Edge 1000 offers a suite of connected features, including live tracking, incoming call and text alerts, social media sharing, weather, wireless uploads and sending/receiving courses and segments. As soon as your ride is complete, the data can be automatically sent to Garmin Connect via Bluetooth® or Wi-Fi®. This lets you stay connected and instantly share the details of your ride with friends, family and social media contacts. LiveTrack allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. Invite followers using email or social media, so they can view your live data on a Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they get your email invite, they can click to follow and see your stats and location on the map.

Fun to use and helpful in tracking training.
by Susan SAN (5 out of 5 stars)

Goes on all my bike rides and i also use it for hiking, although the metrics aren't as useful. Would be nice to have a 2-in-1 for the price. Tricky to learn how to use and it took many rides of failed or inaccurate data recording before i got it down to a process and was able to attach peripheral monitors (heart, cadence, wheel tracking). Note that without a wheel monitor, the speed is calculated by GPS that "averages" a time-distance equation over distance (not clear on the specs for the distance). The speed monitor does not pause when you stop to rest, so you have to turn it off and remember to turn back on if you stop for any period of time. You have to look at a special statistic, average moving speed, to see how fast you are actually riding when you are riding.

Excellent technical service support - from the US and from people that know how an American might use the bike or understand directions.

Expensive.

GPS for the bike and so much more
by Dave S (5 out of 5 stars)

Got it and headed out the door the next day on a one way two day 180 mile bike trip. I had a back up plan - a full size fold up AAA road map. But the Edge 1000 was easy to use. The map is still neatly folded. I never needed it. Battery life was about 9 hours - not quite the 13 or 14 advertised, but I had the spare battery that I use for my phone. When I got the low battery warning on the Edge, I plugged it into the spare and kept on riding. The Edge routed me on good bike roads and a few trails - twice it sent me up short one way streets the wrong way, but, so what? The display was easy to see, it alerts you when turns are coming up and counts down the distance to the turn. I'm still learning my way around all the features, but it was easy to use right out of the box. I spent no time reading the directions - I'll get to them eventually. I was only looking for the GPS functions to guide me on trips and tours, really didn't care about the odometer functions, cadence, or any of that, but it's all there and I'm starting to use that, too.

Best Cycling GPS I've used!

The route options are unparalleled!

For training you can put in a distance, say 50 Miles & it will give you 3 Round Trip routes approximately that distance to choose from.

For Adventure Cyclist like myself, when searching routes it lets you set Filters on type of Roads, paved, Gravel, two lane, highway toll restrictions etc.

It can Point you to key points of interest along the way hotels, food, etc.

This GPS really does it all!

Great product and worth the price.

I purchased the Garmin Edge 1000 as an upgrade from the Edge 820 as I purchased the Garmin Varia Radar System for my bike.

The Edge 1000 has an improved screen from the 820 and it's a significant difference. The colors and brightness of the 820 seems more dull after using the Edge 1000.

In addition, the additional features such as the route mapping allows you to create routes based on your pre-determined distance. This is helpful when you are riding in an area you are not familiar with. It was also try to find you the safest route, which usually has bike lanes/routes.

The screen is also much bigger and easier to see when you are riding. Sometimes I found myself looking at the 820 screen multiple times while I was riding, which can be dangerous. But since the Edge 1000 screen is a lot bigger, I could usually get the information I need in one take.

I highly recommend it. It's a very good product.

Do not buy this as a mountain bike trail GPS
by Wiped (1 out of 5 stars)
March 14, 2018

Bought this to use as a trail GPS for mountain biking. First time I used it I got lost in the desert and had to use my phone to find my way home. This thing is fine on streets but is worthless as a trail map for mountain biking Don't buy this for trails. I now use Trailforks on my iPhone for mountain bike trails and it works great. Would never buy this again and it is a ripoff inspire of the claims that it works on offload trails.

Device does everything thing that you expect from a Garmin with a great display, speed and intuitive navigation. The additional support for Bluetooth connectivity to your cellphone, built-in Wi-Fi and LiveTrack makes this everything you need. I have mine paird with Heart Rate Monitor, Cadence Sensor, Speed Sensor and Varia Rearview Radar.

Go easy the power button will eventually fail
by William Brannon (3 out of 5 stars)

Bought this as a refurb to replace my aging 800. I like it well enough but after using it for a while and cruising the Garmin forums the power button will eventually fail. So word to the wise. Be gentle with the power button.

Like the bigger screen
by Cp (5 out of 5 stars)

So far, I love my new Garmin. I have not used all the features. I was already familiar with how to use the Garmin 510, so it wasn't hard to set this up. Easy to see the screen in all lighting conditions. Bigger screen easier to see with aging eyes!
