12th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver
by John M (5 out of 5 stars)
August 6, 2014

Hello,

The long awaited 12th doctor's sonic is here! I've had a chance to check this out and there are certainly some pro's and con's to this.

Pro's:
- Releasing the claw feels so awesome.
- Sweet sounds (a total of 4) - Little known fact, if you press the button twice quickly and then a third time holding it, it makes one old school doctor sound. If you press the button three times quickly and then a fourth time holding it- it sounds like its broken or malfunctioning.
- Lights up, extends and retracts very well in times of emergency.
- One button! Compare to the 11th Doctor Sonic, when it is extended you would need to reach for a button on the bottom making it awkward to hold and point. This model works with a single button in the middle extended or retracting making it much easier to fight Dalek's.

Cons:
- Gallifreyan technology is very sought after. Protecting it can prove to be quite difficult.
- Setting 15B seems to not be working.
- I have not been able to repair medical wounds...yet
- Does not have a Tardis Docking Station

Update: 8/12/2014

After much trial and error, I still can't open locked wooden doors.

Overall I am satisfied with this piece of work!

I do love the way it makes you feel owning your own sonic screwdriver!

A 4 only because it seems quality on Sonic screwdrivers often differs... guess maybe they improved it.

Bought one for myself long ago, and one more recent for my son. The sound button works on his - open or closed, but only works on my older one when closed, yet mine has a button on the end and his does not (they look identical, are they the same model/Doctor?). I'd think different Doctor screwdrivers would physically appear different too? I love the Doctor, just not great with details...

Still wish some company would license and make a metal version that would be stronger, higher quality and actually function consistently - I'd pay 2 to 3 times the price and maybe more if I know it wouldn't break if stepped on (haven't yet but considering the construction I do fear this possibility). One has been used for years, the other months now - and they still both sound great and open/close! (just not function the same as noted above - and never did. Based on other sonic screwdriver purchases and reviews read - there is varying quality worth noting)...

Nothing is funner than adventuring through your imagination with some realistic looking props - it is still great to have something close than nothing at all - just need the clothing for someday a great Doctor match...or maybe a Thirteenth / Fourteenth Doctor candidate?

So much better than the Eleventh's.

This... WAS AWESOME! This thing is so worth $27.95. Works perfectly! The extending claws look awesome, and they are awesome. Some people might say that you can "just get the Eleventh's for a better price." I would agree with that if you're the type of person who is going to buy it, remove the batteries, and put it on a shelf for 5 years.

This updated version of the Eleventh doctor's sonic screwdriver has a brighter emitter and does not have the annoying hinge on the bottom that looks so stupid and is useless. This sonic screwdriver is capable of activating the light and sound while being extended without opening that stupid hinge and holding it like the Tenth did, which the Eleventh (or Twelfth) never did.

Let's just say every problem that I had with the Eleventh's, they resolved in Peter Capaldi's sonic screwdriver.

I was going on a vacation to Oregon, and I had Amazon Prime, so I just paid the normal price.

Most reviews say: "I got 2 days shipping on standard shipping!" That usually just depends on how close you live to an Amazon warehouse, like if you live in LA, you can get same day shipping now.

Unfortunately, they have not made it look like shiny bronze or chrome. If you want that, then buy the $100 sonic screwdriver that is a programmable television remote (http://amzn.to/1t8Hma1). However, there is the premium version with the touch controls, which at the time was out of stock and a lot more expensive. But the day after I got my normal one, the touch conTROLLS version was in stock.

Anyway, I think this is an amazing (Or should I say Amazon?) toy. Great features, and a great price.

Great Sonic Screwdriver for the 11th and 12th Dr.! This is bother Matt Smiths as Well as Peter Capal
by j (5 out of 5 stars)
November 27, 2017

Awesome Sonic Screwdriver! Great price as well. Has solid action to it and is very satisfying to open and close. Sounds are very basic as there are only two that it alternates between, however, it is still a great product and feels very good in the hand. Good size, not very heavy, and easy to change out the batteries if you ever have to. Yes, this does come with batteries already installed.

NOTE: Contrary to what the description has this listed as, This is BOTH the 11th Dr's (Matt Smith) and the 12th Dr's (Peter Capaldi) sonic screwdriver. If you are specifically looking for the 11th dr's, this is it even though it says the 12th in the listing and on the box.

Overall a good buy for a Dr fan
by J. Maslanka (4 out of 5 stars)

Okay I'm not a HUGE doctor who fan or a Whovian as they may be called but I like the show enough to grab a nice replica prop if it pops up on amazon lightening deals like this one did I think it was like $16-18 at the time and at that price I feel like this is great deal. It fits the bill for both Matt Smith and Capaldis screwdrivers so far as I can tell, aside of the back button deally but appearance wise I would say it's the same to an untrained eye.

Firstly it seems large/big I mean I'm 6'2" and it feels large in my hands, and judging by the show it's totally got to be bigger than the original. Also it is NOT shiny like it is in the picture, it's just matte plastic nothing is chromed or the brass version of that kind of process.

It has 2 sounds for the default button push, another if you double click and hold, and a third that sounds like it's on the frits if you triple click and hold. The extra sounds are mentioned nowhere in the directions so it pays to play around.

The button and spring release for the head movement is definitely cool, you have to push it back in my hand though. I noticed that the teeth if you want to call that around the tip doesn't fit very tight to the tip of the screwdriver, which is kinda sad but relatively expected of a cheap "toy".

PROS
-Price
-Looks "good"
-It's a sonic Screwdriver
-Bonus sounds

CONS
-Big size?
-Not as pictured
-lesser quality upon close inspection
-doesn't work on wood

Overall a good buy just don't expect it to be replica or prop quality, good to have sitting around, or use as a costume prop.

great toy but handle with care
by Teresa W. (5 out of 5 stars)

Kind of cheap plastic feeling, but it's my 13yr old nephew's favorite go-to toy since he just got into Doctor Who recently. He has other interests but he still gets a kick out of the sonic screwdriver and smiles whenever he activates it. It doesn't always latch down at first try, but after pushing the tip down a few times, it locks into place. Be warned this is not for heavy play. Be careful or it would break. Buttons are cheap and the toy is sort of flimsy. Excellent toy for the price point though.

The superior version of the 11th/12th Doctors' sonic screwdriver
by Mysterius rex (4 out of 5 stars)
October 16, 2015

Excellent replica of the 11th/12th Doctor's sonic screwdriver, with only a few minor nitpicks.

Pros:

Looks absolutely brilliant. Nice detailing on the black "leather" handle in particular as well as the extending claw section. While its all molded plastic, the brushed brass(?) and steel look is pretty good with a moderate sheen.

The light is pretty bright, and the sound volume is strong.

Spring action works great, almost a little too strong, but very fun to use.

Four sounds (2 of them hidden). Thankfully, the two normal sounds that cycle with one press of the button sound accurate to the 11th/12th Doctors' sonic in the show, while the hidden sounds require 3 and 4 presses to activate.

Cons:

The extending claws are a bit wibbly-wobbly and might be getting a bit looser over time. Not sure if anyone has figured out how to tighten them without damaging the toy.

Appearance-wise, the wires to the light are visible when the claw is extended, inside the green "crystal". Doesn't bother me though, and only noticeable close-up. The screw things on the extending claws are a bit distracting, but that might be just me. Also, the white section of the handle has noticeable seams in the plastic, but I suppose that's unavoidable. The black "leather" part, while well detailed, still looks like plastic unless seen from a distance. (Can we ever get a version with pleather? Please?)

One thing that is a minor nitpick is that you can't keep the lights/sound activated while extending the device, as this unpresses the button within the sonic. But at least there's only the one button this time.

Comparisons to other versions:
11th Doctor: Main thing is that there is no separate button on the base this time to activate it while extended. This is fantastic not only for ergonomics' sake but also because the distracting hinge is gone on the base. This version is far superior.
12th Doctor Touch Control version: Note that this version, while called "Premium" has a very obnoxious, noticeable battery compartment in the white handle portion. Which for me, ruins the whole thing. I think this one-button version is the superior version of the 11th/12th sonic screwdriver.
10th Doctor: If for whatever reason you're picking between the 10th and 11th/12th, I would definitely go with the 12th one-button sonic, as it generally looks higher quality and mimics the real version better, as well as being a more fun version to play with with the spring action and all. Plus the 10th Doctor's screwdriver annoyingly cycles between all 4 sounds (2 being inaccurate to the 10th's sonic in the show, being classic sounds) with one touch, rather than hiding them with multiple button-presses as is done with the 12th's.

The claws don't retract after 5 min of use
by Austin A. (3 out of 5 stars)
June 12, 2018

The thing literally broke after 10 min of use. The screwdriver won't collapse after 5 times of opening and closing the sonic. Now the claws won't stay down. I do like the touch controls and all of the other things about the sonic. The build is plastic but feels way lighter than the 11th Doctors Screwdriver. The touch controls are very responsive and it sounds fantastic. Overall great product and I'm very thankful they got rid of that awful button on the bottom. I just wish I got more fun out of the product before it broke. 😭

andwatch the youtube video on your device-model if you're reading-instruction-challenged
by Blahoooooo (5 out of 5 stars)
December 28, 2015

There's a tad more to this device than pressing the buttons. Search for, and watch the youtube video on your device-model if you're reading-instruction-challenged, like me. I had trouble locking into the spring-loaded position but watching the video made me realize it could be done with a more gentle touch. Plus, it has to be fully twisted shut before the spring-lock works. I loved discovering the "hidden" sounds.

Unfortunately it does not live up to it's reputation as I couldn't use it for anything! It does not unlock my doors! And, it does not turn on/off my computer, let alone allow me to any other phones/computers. It doesn't make an ATM machine give me cash. It doesn't even screw in screws. This device's lack of functionality was a real let down when I was breaking free from alien intruders, the other day.

Big improvement over the last iteration of this sonic screwdriver!
by ThatOddJoe (5 out of 5 stars)
November 6, 2015

I snagged this sonic screwdriver during one of Amazon's Black Friday deals last year. I have the 11th Doctor's sonic screwdriver as well, and the (10th Doctor's and the 4th Doctor's.) I have to say that Underground Toys must have listened to the fans and collectors when they created this version of the sonic screwdriver. They fixed that pesky bottom button cover that would not stay closed after a little bit of use. This is a huge improvement, and a big upgrade over the 11th Doctor's design.

If you are a Whovian and you are contemplating whether or not to get the 11th Doctor or 12th Doctor's sonic screwdriver, do yourself a favor and get this one. You won't regret it.

Pros:

Better design over the 11th Doctor's sonic screwdriver.

Accurate sounds from the TV series.

The light-up feature is visible in most lighting situations.

Cons:

This is sadly just a replica and will not make you the Doctor.
