Top Reviews

A probably too long, detailed review.

Computer speakers are one of my guilty pleasures. I built myself a home office with two oak walls, just for being able to close myself in the office and work/focus while listening to whatever music I am in the mood for. Some would call me an audiophile. I don't believe I am. My favorite sound from music is a full, warm, mid-range. I used to love the boom of bass when I was younger and had four 12 inch Petras Prowlers in my first car and even went into a tweeter phase where I was wanting the high notes.

My brand of preference is Bose. We have three Bose Mini-Soundlinks in our house. I own 3 sets of Bose Bluetooth headphones. I also have had Bose Companion speaker sets for my PC and our home surround sound is Bose. That all started back when I bought a Nissan Maxima and it had a Bose factory stereo and speakers in it. I just haven't found Bose PC speakers that give me a full enough sound since they're all 2.0 (no sub). I'm sure I could mess with the wiring and put an exact surround system in the office if I wanted but that would be overkill.

I also do like Harman Kardon and had the HK Soundsticks 2.1 set hooked up to my PC for nearly 5 years. When they stopped working, it was only natural to think another set with Bluetooth would be the best replacement. Then, I saw these Edifier 2.1 speakers.

Design is important for their use. I'm a construction engineer and clients stop by my home office to make changes to blueprint ideas (new house construction), even to discuss new ideas they have about their in-wall speaker systems in their new house. I can't have an old, clunky-looking pair of speakers sitting on my desk when I'm trying to sell them on my ability to be innovative and groundbreaking in my designs. The Harman Kardon Soundsticks worked excellently in that regard and so do these Edifier Prisma Encores.

The sound of these speakers out of the box was too punchy. Some people will disagree with that because they cranked them up and thought the bass didn't sound strong enough. If you want to test speakers, turn your PC's master volume to 40. Then listen to see what you hear the most. With these speakers it's the bass. I wish I could recommend a software program with a good equalizer but I have an Asus Xonar DGX soundcard in my PC and it comes with a full-range equalizer that I use. Once I messed with the sound settings for about 20 minutes, I fell in love with these speakers. There's bass, there's highs and the mids sound very warm. It's rare to hit that combination in a PC speaker set.

I'll go over a few of the specifics of using this set. Something that I know has annoyed me for a few years is "Bluetooth" speaker sets, sets being the key word. A singular Bluetooth speaker can run without wires, not including the power/charger cord. Anything more than one, there will be wires. Amazon and their Alexa speakers are working on the ability to sync Bluetooth speakers without wires, Sonos can do it currently, but it's not an exact Science at this point (2019).

So, know ahead of time, there are wires that go from each satellite to the subwoofer. There is a power cord as well and it's a power brick at that. One of the complaints I had seen on this set and was worried about myself is the length of the cords. Here are the measurements: Speaker A (satellite) has a 56" cord, Speaker B has a 60" cord. These are plenty long enough for the way I set the speakers up and will note that those measurements could be an inch or two off due to the wires being new and not completely stretched. Those plug into the subwoofer, meaning, you can have one satellite roughly 5' away from the subwoofer.

I have a tall end table that my PC sits under and I use the top of it for the subwoofer to sit on. The Left satellite is only 18 inches away from the subwoofer, the right satellite is 4 foot away on the other side of the monitor. I'll also say connecting to Bluetooth is very easy ... as long as you read the instructions. I didn't and thought something was wrong. I first tested them with my phone then "wirelessly" connected them to my PC through Bluetooth. At my desk, the speaker separation, the highs, mids, bass at a low to moderate volume is excellent.

There's also the nice touch of the wireless remote that fits the look and theme of the speaker set. I probably won't use it other than something unique to place on my desk. I rarely change the volume of my PC speakers and would use the master volume for that.

Overall, I gave these speakers 5 stars across the ratings. Five for value of money, five for material quality and five for sound quality. Do not give up on these speakers based on your initial out of the box perspective of the sound quality. They do need equalized. I'm thinking most music software (iTunes, Amazon Music, have EQs). I wouldn't have been this thorough with the review if it's a product I didn't feel strongly about it. For the price, this is an excellent, the best I've heard, 2.1 PC speaker system set.

Fantastic sound for the price. I work for best buy and these speakers are as good as some 400 and 500 dollar sound bars.

Sounds is okay, but overall for the price is not as good as expected. Pretty mediocre, and the design is probably it's strong suit more than anything.

Fantastic set for the price, with a little help

For the price, this is a very nice speaker system. I agree with others who have noted the system sounds a bit flat. I use Boom 2, a system wide EQ for mac, which makes it easy to get rich sound out of this set. Very elegant industrial design, looks nice on an expensive modern desk. And truly the system does produce great, crisp, rich audio (especially great for Jazz!) if used with the right EQ. One request: switch to a radio remote instead of IR so I can control it when the sub is out of sight, or move the receiver to one of the speakers.

Good volume but needs tone controls.

These speakers have sufficient volume and good tone. The only complaint I have is that there is no bass and treble tone control. In the unmodified state, I'd say that it is too heavy on the bass. However, if you have a source player with an equalizer, that can be corrected.
