Think of it as an insanely jealous significant other.

OK, so I've had this for several weeks and we've used it numerous times. Basically, I agree with a lot of what the reviewers say, but I'll add my own experience. You do with it whatever you want. We bought this mainly because we go camping a LOT, but having to buy the little bundles of certified firewood is getting to be annoyingly expensive. We were going through the cost of this fire pit every weekend in wood.

First, the unit was delivered with an annoying dent at the bottom of the flame pit. It still fits on the pedestal OK, so it doesn't harm its function and I didn't bother to return it. I believe others have mentioned receiving one with this same problem.

Second, there is a pretty big learning curve to keeping the fire going for a long period of time, and I'm still not there. To start a fire, you fill the thing to the depth indicated by a few cutouts on the inside of the pit. This is a depth of about 2" of pellets. Get your fire going and within maybe 10-15 minutes it'll get hot enough to start the secondary burn around the top ring of vent holes.

This fire will be very hot and amazing in appearance. Nearly zero smoke. Beautiful, truly. If you do nothing, it'll burn like that for maybe 15 minutes, then die down to nothing and you're done. The trick lies in keeping this stubborn thing going. There's a good reason pellet stoves have an automatic feeders that dribble pellets in nearly constantly.

I use a big metal soup ladle to add more pellets. This needs to be done every few minutes. If you add too much, you'll snuff the flame out and this thing will produce more smoke than you would believe possible. What I've learned, however, is that if you ever let the level of pellets drop too far below the 2" mark, it won't burn right and your fire will die out no matter what you do. So add more pellets constantly and quickly, but not too fast either. It's a very difficult balance and I've never been able to keep the fire going well for more than a couple hours.

This fire is like the most clingy, insecure, attention-demanding girlfriend/boyfriend you've ever had. It requires constant reminder that you love it, you will continue to nourish it, and you have eyes for no other. Should you dare turn your attention to anything else for more than a minute or two, this fire will start to wither quickly and no matter what you do, it's love for you will not burn any longer. You'll be left in the cold with the smoldering reminder of your happiness. Until you make a new flame, that is.

Also, the paint on mine started to flake off right during the first use. Then it immediately started to rust.

On the positive side, it does make a big, hot, beautiful, smokeless flame that doesn't leave you smelling like campfire. The fact that it dies quickly can be a plus, if it's late and you're ready to go to bed. No need to dump gallons of water on it to kill it. Just wait 10-20 minutes. Bags of wood pellets can be had cheap at tractor supply, and a 40-pound bag will go for a few hours, I think. Also, it produces very little ash, which is nice. At Alchemy we burned about 100 pounds of pellets and only had a couple inches of ashes in the pedestal.
3 stars because it does work, but it's just a real pain in the butt to keep the fire going. If you have dreams of just hanging around a clean-burning fire and having some beverages with your friends while not having to work hard at keeping the fire going, maybe look into a propane campfire. That's what we've switched to.

a nice alternative to a traditional wood fire pit
by Mark W. (4 out of 5 stars)

I've only used it a couple of times, but it is seems very easy to get a rip-roaring fire in minutes, and boy does it throw off some heat! It is relatively smokeless compared to a traditional wood fire pit UNLESS you let it burn down to red hot pellet embers and decide to throw additional pellets on top of it to get things fired up again. At that point it will smoke like a witches cauldron, bellowing out tons and tons of bright white smoke for awhile until the newly added pellets ignite. The flame distribution is gorgeous to look at and the unit itself is quite light. I just hope it holds up to repeated use.

Decent

When you have it dialed in it works pretty damned good. There is a steep learning curve though. The best method I found is to keep the pellets no higher than than the side slits and leave about a 2"donut hole in the middle. Hardly any smoke that way.

Add more holes and it works great

At first I was really frustrated with the flame genie. It would work great for 20 min but anytime I added pellets it would smoke like mad. That was untill I drilled a bunch more holes that are the same size in the bottom. Now it burns anything. Sticks, pellets, wood chips, etc and it doesn't smoke at all. The things amazing just needs a little modification.

Grating warped after 10 uses [based on previous model]
by Luds (4 out of 5 stars)
June 8, 2015

Love this thing. Use a piece of fat wood to start it up and you can have a blazing fire in 10 minutes with basically no effort. The pellets turn into a tiny bit of fine ash which falls through the bottom. You don't have to worry about burning pieces flying out of the fire - it is very well behaved. And there's no smoke so you don't end up smelling like a campfire.

If you don't add any pellets once the fire starts to die down, the whole experience lasts 30-50 minutes. That's perfect for most occasions.

UPDATE: After making about 10 fires, the bottom grating warped and created a one-inch gap between where the grating meets the inner wall. Now when I put pellets in, some spill out the side. It's not a huge problem yet, because the pellets for the most part stay in, but I don't like cleaning up the spilled pellets. The grating should not warp like that.

SECOND UPDATE: It looks like Flame Genie has changed its design since I wrote this review. Now there a cylindrical base rather than three legs. I expect that this solves the warping problem.

Really like it...
by D. Cole (4 out of 5 stars)

Great little fire pit. When its burning at full burn, it really puts off a lot of heat and it looks great while doing it. The secondary burn at the top really creates some unique patterns. Cleaning is a snap to. I have a stick that I just tap on the grate after it has cooled down and any ash still siting on the grate then falls through.

Now there are some issues I feel that need to be noted. This isnt like a regular fire pit where you got lots of time with a few big chunks of wood that are on fire. There is no popping or cracking of fire wood, Just a nice looking flame coming out of the top and some great heat at full burn. Full burn though, is very short. You have to put about 2 inches of pellets in the bottom and get it started. If you use a gel fire starter, its best to give a quick squeeze over the entire area for even burning and a much quicker start. If you only light a couple spots, your going to be waiting a really long time for this thing to catch fire. You put enough starter gel over the entire top and it will be at full burn in about 15 minutes tops and this is where the issue starts....

You constantly have to feed this thing pellets. Like every 5 minutes or so. So it can make it difficult if your trying to sit around it with your friends and relax. I dont think this is designed to be used for hours at a time. I think its basically, get it going, throw some pellets on it a few times then let it go out. 30-45 minutes, maybe an hour if you are feeling frisky. The constant need to feed it is its biggest downside. This also requires a fair amount of practice!. I have added to much on a few occasions and had it smother it right out and turn what is almost completely smokeless, into a column of smoke that you are now afraid your neighbors are calling the fire dept thinking your house has got to be on fire! Seriously, the mount of smoke that it can cause is just absolutely unbelievable. The good news though is that the chamber is still very hot. Let it smoke and build up the gases in it for about a minute then just try to relight the very top of the pot. It will instantly flame back up and all smoke is gone. So adding pellets so you dont have this problem will take some practice if you are not used to working with pellets.

I had about 6, 45 minutes-1 hour burning sessions with it before I finally dumped the ashes that collected underneath. To my surprise, it was only about half full. Overall very pleased with my flame genie!

Attached a couple pictures. One at full burn, notice how high the fame is and the little fire wizard wielding his flaming sword! Its putting out a lot of heat at this point. The other picture is of it just about done. Notice how most of the embers have fallen through the grate and into the bottom and it is now lit up with the red words, Flame Genie. A very nice touch!!

This cost reduction in the product is not good for the performance overall
by rbindl (1 out of 5 stars)

The design for the product was changed from an open mesh in the fire pit base to a plate with a series of holes. This cost reduction in the product is not good for the performance overall. As the product MFR claims, the ash should fall through the pit base to the bottom. It will if there is an open mesh but with the few holes in the latest revision, the fire gets smothered by the build up of ash and smokes and smolders for hours. The product in its first revision is a good product but the latest rev isn't anything to write home about.

The best fire pit out there!
by DK (5 out of 5 stars)

This eliminated so many hassles. No more smoke, sparks, mess or hassle from heavy firewood. No more propane refills or hoses leading to gas fire pit. The flame with this fire pit is high and looks great and it creates a lot of heat. It come in two pieces and the lower section collects the small amount of ash left behind for easy clean up (nothing compared to firewood). After it cools down I pack it in its original box for storage the two pieces fit together 14 x 14 x 8. Wood pellets are amazing. 40 pound bag of wood pellets for $4 at Menards. I fill a few paper lunch bags with the appropriate amount of wood pellets, then I just grab and go as needed. Lighting the paper bag helps get the flame started. Sprinkle in a few more pellets in as needed for extended use.

Makes a nice uniform flame once heated up but is a one ...
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

Makes a nice uniform flame once heated up but is a one shot wonder. If you try to add more pellets to keep it burning it will just go into smoke mode. If it gets breezy at all it will throw smarks and sometimes smoke again. I used good hardwood pellets of a few brands. Save your money and get a real fire pit.

Perfect for evening fire and drink and perfect pack size for trailer
by Karen B. (5 out of 5 stars)

This is amazing! I dont understand the one complaint about this having a learning curve or being difficult to maintain. I dumped in about 1 1/2 " of pellets, added a little lighter fluid, and in 3-4 minutes I had a great fire. I got a stick at about 20 minutes and cleared about and inch hole in the middle and put 3 pieces of left over cut wood from a weekend project that we're about 1" x 6" and that REALLY helped extend the fire thru the "nursing" period that everyone talks about. I got a ladel and sprinkled about a cup of pellets around the outer edge (think sprinkles on a cake) and this thing has been going great for an hour. The heat is intense. So much, I stepped away to write this review. Now it's sprinkling rain and the fire seems to be doing ok. The base is cool to the touch (see pictures) as my fire fighter husband questioned my logic of sticking it on the deck. I did that on purpose. So save your money and don't by the Solo, I mean stainless steel is nice, but I like to hang on to my money. I got the 12" genie and I believe it to be perfectly adequate for our camp trailer packing and for nights we want a fast fire to knock the chill off and enjoy a drink before bed and not have to waste precious water when dry camping to put it out a typical fire.

As a special note: PELLETS CAN CROSS STATE LINES AND INTO CANADA WITHOUT CUT WOOD RESTRICTIONS.

I also already know that this will be great with briquettes with a round grate for a little bbq, so the hibachi is going bye-bye.

Since starting this, we have been having a heavy rain for 2-3 munutes and it did finally put it out, but the pellets had burned down a good bit. I added two hand fulls and fanned it 30 seconds with a piece of cardboard and have a nice fire again. Yes, when it goes out like that it will smoke as the the pellets heat the smoke then flash over to ignite...all if these type stoves will do that.

So, between baking a cake and taking a few phone calls being interrupted writing this, it has burned for almost 90 minute with minimal effort. Also, with this fire, the paint seems to be curing well.
I look forward to hundreds of hours of use with this amazing genie!

Just go for it! This won't disappoint!
