Worked great at first, then broke within several months - huge design flaw.
by Alex Topier (2 out of 5 stars)

I purchased 2 of these to mount my iPad mini to my MacBook pro. You're only supposed to need one Mount to make this work, but I wanted it to be super sturdy, so I purchased 2 that I used in tandem (one on top, one on bottom - see 2nd image). It worked for a few months with no problem (probably used it a couple times per week at most for an hour or two here and there when I needed it specifically). Then a few weeks ago, both of them broken within a few days of each other. The plastic latch on one side that goes opposite the rubber stopper just snapped off (see 1st photo). Tried crazy glue to get it working again, but it just broke again after a few days. I was very surprised by this given that I was already using 2 when only one should be needed. Very disappointed in the quality because this is clearly a huge design flaw. One of the pieces that ends up shouldering the most amount of pressure is a piece of plastic about 1-2mm thick. Maybe if it was reinforced with metal inside or on the outside, it would be much more sturdy and not prone to breaking.

Doesn't work well with hard-shell cases.
by Caleb Kierum (3 out of 5 stars)

This is a tough product for me to review. I really like what it does and no other product does this function well, however its execution is a bit off.

I have a MacBook Pro 2017 15inch which has a small bezel size. And with the small bezel size there is really no good place to clamp this on except at the very top of the screen where it ends up feeling less secure. Otherwise the clip leaves a weird visual effect on the screen when it is clamped lower on the device. I have heard that this will not damage your screen in the longterm but I am not about to risk that on my precious MacBook.

The rubber pieces that come with it to help it hang onto various items are not enough. There needs to be more sizes. There isn't really a sweet spot for some of the things it needs to do. It is either too tight or too loose on my MacBook.

This device also does not do well with hard cases. The stick is shaped to fit snug with the edge of the MacBook screen and when that shape is modified by a case it holds much less better.

That all being said I am not really sure how this product could have been designed/built better. The job it tries to do is a difficult one. They did their best.

Personally I plan to use this mostly to hold my Samsung T3 Portable SSD - 1TB - USB 3.1 External SSD (MU-PT1T0B/AM) to the bottom part of the MacBook. With no rubber pieces on it can clamp nicely onto the bottom part of my Mac even though I have a case on.

DO NOT BUY FOR 2016 / 2017 MACBOOK PRO
by ichawkeye2013 (1 out of 5 stars)
July 11, 2017

The concept here is good. And on the 2015 and earlier MacBook Pro models (the ones with the larger bezels around the screen) it fits like a glove and the bezels allow enough space for the Mountie to not cause any distortion or damage to your screen. I actually bought two for a 2012 MacBook Pro (1 has arrived, the other is on the way). I'm using an iPad Air (gen 1) and iPad Pro (9.7") and it works great.

With that said, that is NOT the case with the 2016 / 2017 MacBook Pro; it is immediately apparent when attempting to attach the Mountie. My screen became blotchy, dark, and yellow in the areas where the Mountie was placed. I tried all sorts of configurations with the spacers, smaller 'fine tuning spacers' and even placing the Mountie on the outer rubber bezel of the MacBook Pro in an attempt to get this to work. It just isn't going to work without the potential for long term damage. The bezels on the 2016 / 2017 MacBook Pro's are simply not deep enough to allow for the Mountie to apply pressure without affecting the display. It also creates 'waves' in the display whenever you type or slightly move the computer; as much as I'd like to try to give it a go and see what happens (even with the issues I mentioned above), I'm not going to potentially compromise a $4500 laptop just to use this mount. Essentially, the Mountie's best feature (you can mount an iPad to your laptop screen) is it's achilles heel for the 2016 / 2017 MacBook Pro.

So beyond the 2016 / 2017 MacBook Pro, is it a good product? I'm unsure. One of the Mountie's broke within the first week of using it (I was being extremely gentle and cautious, so I was surprised to say the least). I purchased 3 of these in total (2 for MacBook Pro 2012, 1 is on the way as a gift). I'm actually curious to see how long it will be until the others break (again, a gift so hopefully they won't). Now that I won't be attempting to use the 3rd with my 2017 MacBook Pro, I'm stuck with a broken product and a few wasted hours of trying to get this to work. I just wish I could get my money back for the 1 broken Mountie. Sigh.

Also, I don't know what is going on with the 'D' spacer's pegs, but every single one I have has distorted 'pegs' which makes placing them into the Mountie annoying and difficult.

I'm rating this 1 star because everything (including the website, literature, etc) claims that this works on all models of MacBook Pro's. It does not, and I wish that they would update that. I also believe it reflects the issue with the Mountie breaking and the odd 'D' spacer issue. I really want to like this product, but my experience thus far has been very very frustrating.

Good but I'll strry another to compare

Great concept and good reasonable price. First star off is because the rubber pads, that are necessary to fit and hold the various devices fall off once the product is put away. Always a pain to try to find it in the bottom of the bag when trying to use the product. Second star was because it broke The small front tab, when closing the clamp, snapped. Was I being careful, probably not enough, but nevertheless these two issues are frustrating.

or how easily it might fall if someone walking by bumped into ...
by Mandy (5 out of 5 stars)
February 17, 2016

There were lots of mixed reviews when I purchased this product almost a month ago, but I decided to take a chance and make the purchase.

My set-up is a 2014 Macbook Pro Retina 13" (with a case) with an iPad mini 2 (no case).

I'm surprised to see that the reviews for this product are less than a 4.0 on Amazon. Many complain of their iPad or phone slipping off when the screen is constantly moved, or how easily it might fall if someone walking by bumped into your device. However, to me, these scenarios aren't likely to happen in real life.

There are several grips which come with the device. I ended up not using their recommended fittings, and I recommend you do the same. Everyone has different sized cases so it's a matter of trial and error in finding out what works best. I've had my iPad mini attached to my MBP without any slippage even after being attached for over 2 consecutive days. They also include extra pads to add more customization to the fit.

In terms of appearance, the design is very sleek and minimalistic, which I appreciate. This is truly a travel size device made for on the go and mobile lifestyles.

This device most useful if you've purchased Duet on the Apple App Store for iPhone/iPad. This app allows you to use your iPad or iPhone as a true second display which is awesome if you're a laptop user and always mobile. It allows you to be more productive by utilizing something you probably already have. Ten One Design Mountie and Duet is a match made in heaven.

My only con is that the extra pads they include with the grips lose their stick within a few days and can easily fall off. So far I've noticed when they've fallen, but it's bound to happen in the future without my attention. They only provide 2, so it'll be a bummer if I lose them both!

New two for 12.9" iPad.
by Mike Clinton (4 out of 5 stars)

Works really well! However, I had to buy 2 of them to make it work with a 12.9 inch Ipad so that was a little expensive. But with two I'm good to go even on a bouncy train. With one it will fall off and does not seem secure. Even on a stable desk.

Love love LOVE this for holding my iPad mini!
by Paul L. (5 out of 5 stars)

So at first I tried to be stingy. I bought the knockoff. Sometimes the knockoffs work, ya know? But not in this case. The Fixie I bought broke on the second or third use, prompting me to do what I should have done in the first place, and buy the real deal.

I'm a freelance videographer/editor, so I'm on the road a lot which means lots of day's spending hours in a random coffee shop editing away on my MacBook Pro. With this handy little device, I can clip my iPad Air to my macbook's screen and it stays, literally all day without any sliding, sagging, or risk of coming unclipped. Even though I have a thin case and a screen protector on my iPad, this holder does the job, and does it wonderfully. I've been using it for several months now almost daily, and it's not showing any signs of giving out on me.

TL;DR: If you're looking for a way to attach a tablet to your computer screen, spend the money, buy the real deal. Go with this guy!

Save your money and DO NOT buy this product. I love what this does and I hate how its designed!

This is round 2 for me on this great little gadget. Unfortunately, both have broken around the 6-month mark. On the first one, I chalked it up to a fluke, one bad apple and bought another. At $20 + dollars each, I cannot continue supporting this product. I'm only using it for an iPhone 6, not an iPad or other tablets. Both of the failures have been in the exact same place. Right at the grove in the front wing that faces you when mounted and at the keyboard. Sad but true! They don't even warranty this thing. If it fails beyond the Amazon return period (about 1 month) you are out of luck and your hard earned money.

Awesome, holds up a 15" portable monitor
by Skylar (5 out of 5 stars)
May 17, 2017

A lot of good has already been said about this clip so I'll keep it short. It's...
* Lightweight
* Small
* Slim profile
* Keeps monitor closer than comparable clips for less gap.
* Functions as intended with gentle but firm rubber grips that have spacers and even tiny rubber stickers to fine tune fit

I only wanted to review as a counter for those who say it doesn't work with tablets. It easily works with my iPad Air 2 9.7", but also manages to hold up my 15" portable ASUS 169C+ monitor (pictured). You can see in the photos it's leaning downwards ever so slightly, but this doesn't impede on the function or visuals.

If I move the laptop around the screen will fall back or forward a bit, but for sitting at a desk it performs admirably.

Just bought a second to line up my portable tri-monitor setup.

Brilliant product. Wish it existed years ago.

This product is great. It's simple in concept, but it is so easy to mess this type of idea up, leaving a novel but useless piece of plastic garbage.

The rubber chosen for the clamp setup (which comes with several thicknesses and angle configurations for many different hardware cominations) is just right. It's grippy but not sloppy, firm but not going to damage your devices' screens.

I am using a 2013 retina macbook pro and an iPad mini 2, and with the app "Duet" it allows the iPad to act as a second monitor, and at any of the possible resolutions that the device itself can emulate (including high-DPI scaling or native 1:1 which is 2048x1536) which if you are a developer in a somewhat confined space (coffee shop, couch, etc) is priceless.
