Not even close to worth the price
by Anthony Bjorklund (1 out of 5 stars)

Returned the first one because it kept making various pinging, scraping and banging noises. The second one was fine for a while, but now 4 months later it too is scraping, and the speed keeps going up and down, sometimes to a complete halt. Totally unacceptable for a $60 fan.

Update: Contacted Vornado as per their suggestion, and they quickly sent me a replacement (they could not offer a refund because it wasn't purchased directly from them). Good customer service, but we'll see how long the new fan lasts, and I will be updating this after enough time passes (or it also becomes a rattling, wheezing mess).

Update of my update: the replacement Vornado sent me has now also begun to make the same annoying scraping noise. This one probably lasted a bit longer, maybe 6 months, but still totally not worth the price for anything but a retro looking paperweight.

Great airflow and build quality - so why is the bearing so bad!?

****2/27/18 UPDATE****

Down to 1 star.

Every single one of these fans develops the grating/screeching/grinding problem. Vornado's response is to have you destroy your fan (cut power cord at base), send them a picture with power cord and serial number in the photo, and then ship you a new one. They do this relatively quickly, but it's a huge waste. Going to go through yet another replacement and hope that 8 months later they've improved their manufacturing process, but I'm not hopeful.
****Original Review****

This is my 3rd VFAN Jr. All 3 of them have developed a high-pitched grinding noise. Have it in both white (at home) and Chrome (at my desk at work). Chrome at work developed high pitched whine, Vornado quickly and easily replaced fan for me, new fan developed same grinding noise within a few days. Completely unacceptable for the price. Fan at home also developed grinding noise within about 2 weeks. Recommend avoiding if in a situation where you'll hear the fan noise. I'm living with it until I get motivated enough to disassemble and figure out what's causing it.

I'll note that I have this fan in standard and large sizes as well - those are performing just fine and have not developed the same sound. It's only the Jr. model that does it.

Looks cool, cuz it is. (revised 7 months later)

I don't have any problems with my fan. It isn't quiet, but it's steady, so the noise gets tuned out. It's hard to know how big it is in photos, so I'll just tell you.. if you had a globe on a stand that spins and the globe was the size of a volleyball, that's how big the fan is. It is currently blowing at me from 7 feet away and I can feel a nice gentle breeze on my face. Haven't had to touch that thermostat. Very pleased.
+++Ok, so real talk.. I read reviews about the fan making strange noises after a little while, but I bought it anyway. Ill give it one little bit of sympathy.. it has fallen off the shelf (from a trip over the cord) and has ran continuously for about days on end in the last 7 months.. make of that what you will. Truth remains. This fan has recently started making strange noises. It woke me a few times last night because it sounds just like someone is piddling around in a drawer looking for something. I eventually realized that wasn't the case, but it has DEFINITELY started making weird various noises. It sounds like it's oscillating, and it isn't. It sounds like something is jingling in there from time to time. Ill say the first thing one more time to bring up another point. It sounds... just like.. an oscillating fan. It is currently to my right, and though it is on II speed and facing straight at me, it sounds like its moving and changing speeds, because the sound is crazy. It's been a cool fan, and it sure is nice looking, but dang if the old folks aren't right on the money about new stuff... it just isnt built to last. Built to look cool till you throw it away.

Fantastic Fan
by Gary Nored (5 out of 5 stars)

At first I was disappointed because it is so small (my fault -- I didn't check size). But as soon as I turned it on I was in love. Quiet. Powerful. Puts out more air than any fan this size I've ever experienced. So I decided to get another one. All I could find here was fans in black plastic. I'm old. I have poor eyesight, and I simply hate black plastic. So I looked around and found this little guy's big brother in white metal elsewhere. The plastic units probably work even better than the simpler metal units, but I like the smooth feel and heavy weight of the metal units. Either way, these are awesome fans, worth every penny.

Update: these fans worked for less than 6 months
by JSchiavo (1 out of 5 stars)

Ended up buying 3 colors, and after less than six months they are making an awful sound. We can't even use them and now I can't return them. Thus is horrible coming from what's supposed to be a great company. Complete waste of money unless your looking for a paper weights, which these are.

Trust me, but the Hunter metal desk fan, I have 2 that have been running for nearly 5 years. Going to buy some more of them NOW.

Purchased 2 of these awesome fans, one in red also for my daughter. These put out a perfect amount of air for a bedside table fan, which is what we got them for. Low noise but still enough to satisfy us humans that cannot sleep w/o a fan in our faces.

I switched to all metal fans a few years ago b/c I was sick of replacing plastic ones nearly every year and they were just cheap looking.

These fans are great at being fans and great looking. Will Be purchasing the next size up for our living room soon. Just buy it you won't regret it.

Adorable retro look, abhorrent performance
by Michaela Stelzer (1 out of 5 stars)
February 23, 2017

I have a mid-century design aesthetic in my home and wanted a table fan for my son's shelves in his nursery and thought this would be perfect as it looks retro. It arrived and seemed to be solid, good quality. I wanted this fan for airflow and a little white noise while he sleeps. The airflow was adequate, but the noise was actually a bit quieter than my other fans in the house and not that great at drowning out household noise. A Pro for those looking for a quieter fan, a Con for someone wanting white noise. Also note that it a very creamy, off-white, not a pure white.

I decided it was cute enough to give it a shot anyway and kept it. I'm now sorry I did. Less than 6 months later with daily use during naps and overnight, it gave up. It started to make a god-awful screeching noise and the blades would wobble a bit. My husband tried to tinker with it and WD-40 it and got it to limp along a bit longer before it died again. I think I'm long past the return/exchange window and will be looking for a new fan again. I can't speak to the Tornado/Amazon's customer service regarding this yet. I'll update my review if I hear anything.

Great desk fan.

Wonderful size for my desk. It's high setting is too high for your face blowing but its fantastic for cooling the whole room. The low setting is just what I needed at my desk. Adorable look.

Not a Vornado fan fan
by soz (1 out of 5 stars)
June 28, 2017

What a disappointed. On the plus side, it's cute. Beyond that there isn't much positive to say about it. It was supposed to circulate the air in a small room. I put it in my tiny bathroom and only felt the air moving if I stuck my face or hand right in front of it. It's unclear to me why it gets such good overall reviews. I have another tiny Vornado that was meant to be used on a desk or something similar so that it blows directly on you. That one barely moved the air at all.It didn't even make my hair blow. I'm not sure why Vornado fans, which are reasonably high priced, are considered good fans. I must be missing something.

The small fan is great for a small space where the fan will hit ...
by SuperLuigi (4 out of 5 stars)
September 12, 2015

I purchased the small and medium fan. They are both so close in size and didn't know which to pick. The small has 2 speeds, the large has 3. The lowest speed will most likely not be used because it's too low and equivalent to someone standing next to you and blowing in your face...

The small fan is great for a small space where the fan will hit you directly - like a desk. The larger one is only a tad more powerful but will do a better job circulating air in a small room. I posted photos of the small and medium fan side by side for comparison. Also - The color of the fan is lovely but not as bright as seen in the photos. It has a more vintage mint green color, not as bright as in photos.

Great Customer service, beautiful fan, but it is hard to clean.
by Swedisheik (4 out of 5 stars)
August 28, 2017

Update: I originally posted this review with just two stars after one of the 3 Vornados I own died after just a year of light use. Almost immediately after I posted the review, I was contacted by Vornado, who wished to honor their 5-year warranty, which I was not aware of. The process of submitting a claim for a replacement fan took less than a day from start to finish, and I await my replacement fan.

I have purchased three of these fans: one junior last summer, another junior this summer, as well as the larger size model, also this summer. The one I bought in July 2016 just died, a year after purchase. The motor had tipped out of its housing, causing the fan blades to scrape the metal outer part. This caused it to make a horrible shrieking noise intermittently. I am not handy with small appliances, and didn't realize right away what was causing the problem.

The front grill is very difficult to remove for cleaning/maintenance of the fan. The motor burnt out before I was able to figure out what the problem was or access the inside part of the fan. I watched YouTube videos in order to figure out how to take off the grill, with no success. My teenage son eventually got it off, but he scraped the paint in the process. Not that it mattered, since the fan no longer works. If you use a tool that has been modified in some way to prevent scraping the paint, it slips all over the place and makes it even harder to get the grill off.

The fan is beautiful. And the larger model seems much sturdier and has more metal parts. Such an expensive fan should last longer than a year. Not only that, but it was sitting safely on top of my refrigerator, and not even used every day in the summer.
