The Joseph Joseph Intelligent Waste Totem is an innovative system that combines all your waste and recycling requirements in one neat unit. The general waste compartment at the top has a removable inner bucket that takes custom-fit liners, but includes liner-retaining holes if you're using standard liners instead. Breather vents make removing a full liner easier, while a carbon filter inside the lid helps eliminate odors and saves you emptying a half-full bag just because of the smell. A multi-purpose drawer sits at the base of the unit. Offering flexible use, this comes with a removable divider that's perfect for separating different types of recycling and features specially designed hooks that allow you to fix 2 standard carrier bags inside. Alternatively, custom-fit liners are available for a perfect fit. Totem Stainless Steel also features a removable food waste caddy. This can be stored on a kitchen worktop, in the general waste compartment or in the multi-purpose drawer - whichever suits you best. Custom-fit compostable liners are available as well, which fit neatly inside with no overhang. Both stylish and durable, the unit has a fingerprint proof stainless-steel body and lid. Custom-fit liners for the general waste compartment and drawer unit (IW1), compostable liners for the caddy (IW2) and replacements carbon filters are all available separately. External surfaces - wipe clean with a damp cloth. Liners and food waste caddy - Clean with hot, soapy water.

I know. It's expensive. But as I was researching trashcans turns out they are all pretty pricy. I was stuffing all my recycling into my pantry to keep it out of site which was pretty gross and inconvenient; but my kitchen is small. My garbage can after a few years, as nice and stainless as it was, started to mold inside :( and smell, no matter how much I scrubbed it. It's too expensive to just buy a new can every few years. Often I had to dig through my trash when visitors left to pull out the recyclables, as it's hard to train folks. I wanted my can to do what I needed it to do, be convenient and look nice in my kitchen for a long long time. I bought this a few months ago and I LOVE IT! First off, EVERYONE compliments it, asks questions and wants one. It's really as cool and quality looking as the picture. Second, EVERYONE puts garbage, food waste and recycling in the proper place, and actually seems to love doing it. I know seems weird but true! Taking the garbage out is so easy. The food waste bin doesn't smell and the entire system is quick and easy to keep clean. So if you are reading this review to see if going crazy on an expensive trashcan is for you...I say yes! I have a small house, and I'm not accustom to splurging frivolously. This has been totally worth every penny.

Whatever happened to "quality control"?

I really wanted to love this product, as it's concept is terrific. However, the execution is simply terrible. It just isn't well made and apparently they have zero quality control. None of the gaps line up, and the bottom drawer just looks terrible because it's so crooked.

The product itself is great once everything is in place. What I noticed when I first opened it:
1) My dog can't open this trash can. Hehe...yay
2) The bottom drawer isn't a drawer so much as it is it's own separate waste compartment with wheels that fits perfectly below the main waste part. This means that lifting the trash can causes the bottom to fall out because it isn't connected, so try not to lift it.
3) It's still easy to get around despite the last observation because of the location of the wheels. I can't describe this too much because I can't even tell you what other trash cans do wrong, but this one does it right.
4) It was a little dented when I got it. The packaging was fine, so I'm not sure if this was a problem with manufacturing or the deliverer being very aggressive with it when loading. Will be calling to see what they can do about it. As expensive as it is, I did expect it to come in better condition. The material itself seems very durable.
5) SERIOUSLY MY DOG IS SO FRUSTRATED she can't get it open. It's magnificent.
6) It was taller than I expected, but still a good size as its design does well in a kitchen without being hidden.

Very Poor Quality; Very Poor Customer Service

This product is poor quality and customer service has not responded effectively to my request to honor the manufacturer's warranty. They originally said they would replace the defective item (that was under warranty) but then said they could not (and canceled shipment of the replacement product) because I was "a USA customer". I do not recommend buying this product as the quality is not worth the price and the company did not stand behind their warranty.

It's just okay. The bottom compartment should rally be larger than the upper "trash" compartment, which is so large that it starts really stinking before it's close to filling up. The charcoal odor neutralizer insert doesn't do much to help. Whenever you press the button to open the can, the top frame pops off because it isn't a tight enough fit on the front side. Similarly, the bottom compartment slides in and out so easily that it's usually not clicked into place. Lastly, HOLY FINGERPRINTS!!

Good compact waste solution; has shipping and manufacturing issues

The first one arrived with large denting in the front, due to both Amazon's poor packaging but also the manufacturer packaging, which is utterly lacking on the sides. It's probably not intended for individual shipping but rather purchases at a bricks & mortar retailer.

Ship-back was easy and the replacement arrived quickly, but after two weeks of normal use, the large press-button that opens the lid simply fell off. It's stainless steel that is (poorly) glued to plastic underneath. It would not be hard to glue back on, but then again, I paid $240 (!) for this trash can and I expect more for the money I spent.

I applaud the industrial design of this product: it functions well and looks good. I'm going to try a third replacement, and it's nice that there is a 10 year warranty. But overall, this product feels overpriced given the construction. If you're expecting a handcrafted, artisan, made-in-small-batches-with-love trash solution, looks elsewhere; this is Just Another Thing Made in China.

If there were other options on the market - and I suspect there will be more soon - I would look at those instead. Maybe I'm a sucker, but it works well for what I need so I'm going to give it one more try.

Item damaged multiple times

I like the look of this trash can and believe it can be very functional. However, the first time I've purchased this item, it came in its original box plus an outer shipping box, but that didn't prevent the front of the trash can from being dented. I then returned and exchanged the item. When the exchanged trash can came, it was only in one (original) box. I had the sinking feeling as I was opening it that the product might be damaged again, especially since there's one less box than last time. And to no surprise, the item was dented and I couldn't even pop the dent back out from the inside. I am returning and not repurchasing the item, as it is such a hassle to re-box, bring it to UPS store so many times, and wait for exchanges to come.

3 main flaws

Such a great idea. Looks nice and the implementation is good, however three things disappoint:
1-Recycle bin should be larger than trash bin. -- Most people who would spend over $200 on a trash can live in cities with recycling pick-up. (And a lot of those are probably either single or dual-income, no kids). Those demographics are going to have more recycling by volume than trash.
2-Compost bin lid should be a hinged flip-lid. As anyone who regularly cooks dinner knows, your hands are full. You don't need to open the trash bin lid and *then* pull off a lid to put compost in... and where do you set the compost lid? What if you need both hands to dump a bowl of something?
3-It clearly says here on the product description that the compost can fit in the lower bin, which implies it hangs like it does from the top bin, but it doesn't. The only way it "fits" in the lower bin is by setting it in the lower bin.

Are these enough for me to return it? No. But pretty big design oversights for such an expensive product. If these were fixed, it would be darn near perfect.

Love the brand, not the totem

So I generally love Joseph Joseph designs, this totem trashcan was a disappointment. The materials were easily dented. The compartment for recycling was far smaller than is needed. The parts didn't seem to stay together very well either. Once assembled and standing in the kitchen, it was far too large. It had to be returned unfortunately. I will however continue to buy other well-designed Joseph Joseph products. Love the brand just not this totem.
