Product Description

Mycestro is a wearable 3d mouse that is used to control your computer, tablet, or phone using gestures and mouse like functions. Mycestro is a wireless three-dimensional (3d) mouse, which means it has the ability to track hand motion in 3d space. Right out of the box, it can perform all the functions of a traditional computer mouse and more. The Mycestro has three buttons on its thumb pad, corresponding to the left, middle, and right buttons on a traditional mouse. The Mycestro scrolls when you slide your thumb along the thumb pad from side-to-side. The Mycestro is ergonomic, in that you can hold your hand and arm in any position that is comfortable to you within range of your device. We've seen people using their Mycestro' S in all of the following positions: sitting down, arm in the air, forearm resting on the desk, elbow resting on the chair armrest, forearm in lap under the table even waving their arm around in the air while walking around the office, if you've come up with a unique way to use your Mycestro, please tell us about it the Mycestro will work up to 30 feet (9.1 Meters) from the Mycestro dongle, which is plugged into the USB port of the device under control. Go ahead and type; at only ½ ounce, the Mycestro will not interfere with your keyboarding, and because the Mycestro only reads your gestures when your thumb is touching the thumb pad, you can type without the cursor jumping all over the screen. The Mycestro will work with computers configured for multiple monitors, and yes,.. The Mycestro will work in the dark. Each Mycestro pairs uniquely to its own dongle, so your Mycestro' S will not interfere with each other. We support: Windows XP, vista, 7 and 8 Apple os x linux.

Elegant and with a learning curve thankfully less steep than its price tag
by Stefan Scherbik (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this device because I wanted to create my own Arduino Micro-based gyroscopic wireless mouse and compare it to an actual product. However, having used the Mycestro (which does almost exactly what I wanted my home-brew mouse to do) makes me think twice about using a gyroscope/accelerometer for axis control.

The reason for that is ergonomics. The Mycestro requires one to make minute wrist movements to control the pointer. This works very well (insanely well once you get used to it). It's incredibly convenient to have so much control with a small wrist movement. But, once I started using it for a few hours, I started to notice some strain in my wrist, particularly in the area responsible for left-right movement. So, this is the same ergonomic issue from which regular mice suffer. Having to move one's wrist repeatedly over the course of hours every day causes strain. That's why vertical ergonomic mice are so much more comfortable than regular mice--they make it so that all movement originates from the elbow instead of the wrist.

I actually set up my Arduino using four light receptors and an LED for axis control (instead of a gyroscope), so that when you shine the light towards any of the light receptors, the pointer moves in the direction of that receptor. This makes it so that your wrist stays stationary, and all movement originates from your elbow. I'm not done with that project yet, but it seems way more comfortable to use than the Mycestro so far. Although it does require having photoresistors tacked onto one's monitor. Mycestro might want to consider designing a sister product that uses something allowing for elbow-based pointer movement as opposed to wrist-based movement.

Despite all that, this is an excellent product for what it is. It is so, so convenient to use once you get the hang of it. And it takes just over a day to gain proficiency with it. The touch buttons are super elegant to use for movement and scrolling, and the whole thing is satisfyingly responsive and zippy. One can keep their hands on the keyboard and move the mouse without having to repeatedly move to and from a mouse. I use mine with a large screen monitor and it works just as well with that as with a smaller or dual-monitor setup.

I wish the battery life were a bit better (it wouldn't be so bad to make the device physically larger to accommodate a larger battery), and that the price weren't so high. Even with all that, this is a truly fabulous device.

UPDATE: I now feel like a complete dummyhead, as it turns out that indeed one can control the Mycestro by originating movement from the elbow instead of from the wrist. So rather than twisting your wrist around to move the mouse pointer, you can also move your entire forearm with the mouse using your elbow. It works splendidly and it really reduces strain, so I'd recommend doing that instead of relying on wrist movement.

Not as efficient or accurate as mouse for my situation

For multiple monitors and precision work we couldn't find it as useful or accurate as a mouse. They agreed to refund the product once they received the tracking number. But now its been 9 days since we mailed it and they are not responding. :-(

Vulnerable, bad function
by A. Boersma (1 out of 5 stars)

I had a bad experience, this Device arrived damaged, I could not use it properly.

The construction is to vulnerable, the Scroll function does not work, so I can't use it.

But I had to pay 2x Postage costs (2x 30 Euro) plus Taxes (40 Euro). And this 100 Euro is lost, even after refunding.

Teaching an old mouse new tricks.
by P. Wojtowicz (4 out of 5 stars)

I originally received the Mycestro as part of a Kickstarter campaign. It took a while to get in, but I've had it for over a year now and I'm using it as my main mouse now.

First of all the Mycestro is a small capacitive touch mouse that tracks your movement through space to move the mouse. When I first received it, I found it awkward to type with the mouse hanging on my finger constantly and found that it slowed me down a bit at first. After using it for a few days I was back up to normal typing speeds. The mouse it self is great. It helps me keep my hands on the keyboard when I need to do mouse related tasks and it is surprisingly accurate once you get used to it. It's a pleasure to use and my wrists feel much better now that I'm not having to move my hand over to my mouse and hold it in an awkward position. In terms of comfort and performance it's a great investment.

Now for the bad, which I must prefix, I mine is one of the first Kick Starter backer orders, so I don't know how well this will translate to current production runs. When I first received it, it would constantly crash and freeze up for seconds at a time and become unresponsive. It got to the point that it was crashing and not working for hours at a time. I finally sent it in and they were able to repair it and now it works much more reliably, though I'll still get a freeze up maybe once a week or so. The other issue I found is sometimes clicking is not super intuitive. When I'm moving the mouse and then go to click, the click will sometimes move my mouse a bit from where I want to click, or will do a drag click simply because the mouse is still tracking motion since my finger is still touching the surface. It's a little bit annoying, but with more use I've gotten better at it.

Cool Concept + Poor Execution = One let down user
by Chris Gracia (3 out of 5 stars)

Cool concept, but like the leap motion, doesn't quite hit the mark. Also, I question the quality of the product, as mine is currently in pieces after attempting to take the device off of a USB charger one time, the device came apart in halves. I tried to find a support link and could not find one on their website. I don't trust this company or their products anymore. I was so excited for this product, but I am let down by the execution. I ended up putting the device in a plastic bag, in halves, and put it in a drawer, where it has sat for a year. Some day, I may sit down and try to solder the battery back on and glue the case back together, but I am honestly not that driven to do so, knowing that the performance of the device itself is not that accurate.

Cool Factor: 5/5

Device performance: 2.5/5

Quality: 1/5

Takes a while to get used to it but awesome when you do!

I also got mine as part of the kickstarter campaign so I've had it for quite a while now. It took me about a month of constant use during my 9-5 day job as a software engineer to get the hang of it. I've been using the logitech trackman marble wheel since 2004 and it is a huge difference! The tracking is SUPER accurate so I can select individual characters in visual studio / microsoft word / etc. The only trouble I've found is when you single or double click (you can set it allow taps on the pad to click or physically press in on the pad button to click) it will move the mouse so you end up doing something you didn't want to like drag select so that's why I give it 4 stars. If they can figure out how to make it only start tracking movement once your finger has been touching the pad for more than the time it takes to tap/click then they'll earn that 5th star! Also note that if you bend the rubber "ring" around your finger and put it in between your two index finger knuckles you can wear it the full 8 hour day comfortably. I've accidentally worn it to lunch and the bathroom a few times forgetting it was there. And it's so light you can type just as fast with it riding around on your finger.

I expect better.

It is a neat unit, but not overly durable... and when the finger strap breaks (which happens regularly) they gouge you $10 plush shipping for a new one!! They need to re-engineer that strap. For $150, I expect better.

It works well and is useful
by EMF (5 out of 5 stars)

I've had mine for about a year and a half and I really like it. It's very handy for emails and editing text documents. I wear it while typing and have no problems. I have used it with SolidWorks and it does a reasonable job but I find it difficult to precisely select and move things with it. The really nice feature is that you can be using both the Mycestro and a regular mouse at the same time so you can easily utilize the strengths of each. It has proven durable and bug free for me. It has definitely lived up to the manufacturers promises and I would buy another one. I just wish it was a five button mouse.
