It uses a lot of batteries and one of them quit working at all. I ordered 12 of them for my shop. The ones that work, work well we had to finally buy rechargeable batteries, they go thru them so fast. I called to get some support but did not get much help

Living in the South certainly has its benefits, but it also brings a lot of challenges. Like right now, my kitchen is 87 degrees and my buttercream icing is melting on top of my cupcakes. This brings about other issues. I can put them in the refrigerator, but that will ruin their moist texture. I can leave them on the counter--this will attract ants. Here's where the Good Cooking Auto-Vacuum Food Dome saves the day. I can put my cupcakes on the tray, place the dome over them and press the red button on the top. This will remove any air and seal the dome shut. This smart container also monitors the pressure inside the dome- if the seal is broken or pressure drops, it will automatically vacuum out the air.

I can actually place the Good Cooking Auto Vacuum Food Dome in the refrigerator to resolve my buttercream icing issue, without drying out my cupcakes! I can even just leave the sealed dome on my counter with cupcake inside and the ants won't be able to touch 'em. This being said, it's not really big enough to accommodate a two layer cake. I couldn't even get one dozen cupcakes in it. There is also a disposable tab that the unit ships with. You will need to remove this tab before pressing the sealing button--otherwise it will not work. It took me a few minutes to figure this out. It is on the unit where the batteries are installed--the side opposite the red button. Aside from its size, and having to find the tab on my own, this is a great kitchen item. It gives me more options than I had before.

A useful nice-to-have kitchen tool

I do think this is a handy tool in the kitchen. I wouldn't consider it a must-have but definitely a nice-to-have, however if you're in a home that eats bread on a daily basis then I would consider it a necessity.

What I liked: sturdy item, doesn't t seem cheap or flimsy. Easy to use, just press the red button to create the nice air tight seal and it automatically shuts off or back on depending on what's needed. It takes both C or AA batteries. I thought it was relatively easy to figure out how to use.

Didn't like: I thought the instructions could have been a little more user friendly on how the dome works and how to put it together. My batteries seemed not to fit just right and kept popping out, don't know if that is a flaw or by design.

I've used the dome to marinate meats. For meats that I should've marinated for at least an hour, I marinated in the dome for just 30 minutes and I thought it did a good job to assist sealing flavor into the meat. I have not used this for bread yet but I expect it will do a great job of keeping breads and pastries fresh longer. Based on my marinating success with this, I rate it four stars but will update after I see how it does with bread. If it performs just as well then I would definitely rate it a five star item.

I cannot say enough good things about this cake dome. My husband is a Mexican American living in Florida where good pan de luce is hard to come by so we make long trips to other towns and bring home his goodies. He can finally enjoy them at his leisure because this dome keeps them fresh sooooo much longer than his old regular cake dome. He's a very happy man and we thank you.

Self suctioning for an air tight hold. Uses 2 C batteries but comes with adapters to turn AA into C sizes. I thought that was an excellent idea as most people don't have C batteries laying around. I also love that it's self controlling. If air does leak the lid will automatically detect it and suck more air out and reseal.

I LOVE this thing. I am obsessed with it. I do a lot of baking- daily bread, sometimes muffins and always our family birthday cakes. Since this food dome arrived I've used it to store leftover birthday cake, to marinate chicken (yes! It does that too!) and to keep our daily bread fresh. The vacuum seal is really tight on this and it kept everything from going stale.

It's really easy to use, just insert the batteries (there is a size adjuster if you don't have C batteries. I used two AA batteries because that's what I had on hand). Then put your food on the platter part, place the dome over it and press the red button. You'll hear the air being vacuumed out of it. It takes about two minutes at maximum. After that the seal is so tight that to release the dome and get to your food you have to press the handle button again.

The only thing that I was not pleased with was the size. For some reason I was expecting this to be a little bigger. It could not fit a 9 inch double layer cake without crushing the top decorations and having the sides stick. However, it fit the leftovers just fine.

I'd recommend this for 8 inch cakes, brownies, cookies, or muffins because of the size. I also used this to marinate my chicken. I places the chicken in a dish with marinade and let the dome vacuum. It is supposed to increase how porous the meat is and to allow the marinade to soak up more quickly and thoroughly. I will definitely be using it again for that purpose.

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars because so far it has proven far better than I thought. The first thing that really surprised me is that even though it recommends using "C" batteries (which I normally don't have on hand) it has an adapter to allow you to use "AA" batteries (that I do usually have) to operate the vacuum system. I wanted to see just how well it would work so I took 1 slice of bread & tore it in half. I put half into a regular cake cover & the half into the smart food dome & turned the vacuum onto it. After 2 days of them sitting on the table I checked & the half in the regular cake cover is getting stale & dried out & the one in the smart food dome still feels fresh & ready to eat. I resealed it & plan on checking it again in a day or so. I can see this saving a lot of money since my husband is the only one that eats breads, cakes, etc. here & he can't eat stuff before it ruins.

Update: The half slices of bread has been under the cake covers for 5 days now & the one under the regular cover could be crushed into million pieces & the piece under the Smart Food Dome is still edible... just bring on the jam...

Final update: I finally had to remove the bread from the Food Dome after 8 days (just so I could use the dome to protect some brownies) & the bread was still edible.

this works great.....put a cake in it & it kept the cake moist & soft as the day i put it in for over a week. i use it all the time for cakes & muffins & rolls.
