Way better than expected!

This is a review for the Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter by Kindling Cracker.

I bought this as a humorous Christmas gift for my son. Once he took off the fancy bow, naturally we had to go play with it straight away. A half hour later and we're back inside with armloads of kindling. The splitter works perfectly and is even better than advertised. I've had fireplaces and wood stoves for my entire life, and figure I've seen every kind of splitter and maul by now. I had expected the Kindling Cracker to be good, but how could it be much of an improvement on what's already out there? Well, surprise, surprise - it's good and better. I couldn't be happier with this thing and here's why: I haven't been able to split kindling for a few years because of a bum shoulder, but today I discovered that with the Kindling Cracker I'm able to split SINGLE HANDED (with my trusty 4# Stanley sledge) all the kindling I'm in the mood for. I can even do it sitting down. This turned out to be a huge surprise gift for me because I never expected that I'd be able to split wood again. My son loves it, too, and the only downside is now we have to take turns.

Clean design, bullet-proof, super stable. The round top makes comfortable in the hand to carry.

Edit: I just bought an Estwing MRF3LB 3-Pound Sure Strike Fiberglass Drilling Hammer and it works even better than the Stanley for me.

Best Kindling Tool you can buy. Built from Solid Cast Iron To Last Many Years.

This really is the only way to split kindling. It's the ultimate tool that anyone can safely use. I actually split kindling right in the comfort of my living room. I located a suitable sized log which measured 15 inches high, by 12 inches in diameter and attached the Cracker using two wood screws. I cut out one side of a cardboard box to catch any wood chips, bark etc. And set the log in the center. I use the recommended 4lb Stanley Fatmax Hammer which I purchased as a combo with the cracker. Any lighter hammer would make splitting more difficult in my opinion. (See the photo)

I would also recommend using eye protection during use.

Husband had shoulder surgery - just before the heating season. Got this for him, and saw him picking up splits off the ground, so I cut the bottom out of a 8 gal plastic nursery pot, and voila ! no more bending over needed. He liked it before, and loves it now.

wielding a large blade or hatchet isn't really a great idea. This is a great item to quickly ...

Very nifty -- using a 4lb mallet, I split pieces of wood about 4-5 inches across into thumb-size, and smaller kindling. At my fireplace, I used to baton slices off a piece of firewood with a thick Becker BK2 knife. But with kids and pets running around, wielding a large blade or hatchet isn't really a great idea. This is a great item to quickly make your kindling without chopping (you must smash though). Make sure to avoid wood with knots in it, and don't go too thick-- a piece of wood just smaller than the diameter of the safety ring can get stuck in the ring after it splits. It is a hoot to use though-- just messing around trying it out for a few minutes, I filled a whole Jet Sled with kindling. If you're not a big fan of using axes, you will like this.

Another pleasantly impressed user. I purchased this as a last shot before having to purchase a power splitter. We have wood from tree cuttings from the last three years. The old ones are hard as rocks, i had about given up getting them in shape for the firepit. On a lark, I purchased this device as I was purchasing something else for the boss (wife). Opened the box and thought "my toy is here". Nope, it's a very good tool.

I used to fight with hatchets, mallet, wedge, and severe cuss words from trying to stabilized wood and get the right angle to get it to split. WIth this, it's a matter of a couple small taps to start, then 3-5 hits with a small mallet and the wood is split. If a piece it too big, just split it again. I would recommend stabilizing it, made a big difference for me. It's currently on a bench (a tad high, but not really a problem), with a coupld of bolts to hold it in place - easy to take off as needed. Only issue I have is that the old wood tends to leave lots of dust and crap that needs to be cleaned up. Minor price to pay.

I don't review everything, and I sure as heck don't always give 5 starts. Worth it here, though.

Great product, Makes splitting kindling a breeze. After using mine on the ground, then bolted to a log... I decided to saw off a bucket and mount the Kindling cracker in the bucket... on the log. Now the mess and the kindling stays in one place and is convenient when I want to build a fire. A few holes drilled around the side keep the water drained and the kindling dry.

I have been heating my home with a wood burning stove for decades. So I've cut and split my share of firewood, using chainsaws, axes, mauls, wedges and sledgehammers. I purchased this device a few weeks ago to see if it would ease my kindling production. To date I have split seasoned oak, ash, maple and many other kinds of wood. As long as I keep the wood lengths to 10-12 inches and no larger than 6" in diameter this tool works exactly as described. I mounted it onto a section of knotty pine for a stable base and I use a 4# maul with a synthetic handle. The Cracker is made of cast iron and because it is always outside I anticipate it will surface rust soon. Big deal. I'm splitting kindling, not drinking champagne from it. Highly recommended for those who know what they are doing.

Six month update: After six months the Kindling Splitter still deserves 5 stars. I attached two photographs to show my actual Splitter next to my woodpile. Six months of exposure to rain, snow, heat and cold. Works like a charm. I bought a second one for the Michigan cabin.

It delivers - but buy a mallet!

I have been heating my home with wood for a couple of years. I tried to split the old fashioned way, but I just couldn't get the hang of it, and was afraid of hurting myself. I have also paid others to split for me. I bought his as a way for me to just create a few small pieces of kindling from the cord of wood I bought, for fire starters. For this purpose, it works BEAUTIFULLY. I have tested on a variety of logs - small roundish logs from a downed tree in my yard, already split very dry wood for this year's fire - yes, if the wood is harder, it takes a few more "whacks" but I could not find a piece of the many laying around my yard, that would not split. I'm a middle aged female, not weak, but not super strong either. The box says to use a "hammer" or another piece of wood. IGNORE that, and just buy yourself a 4# mallet. I tried with both a household hammer & another piece of wood - neither of those methods works. Not sure why they don't just specifically say to use a mallet on the packaging, it makes a huge difference. I set the device on top of a nice stump, keep it level! I did not attach mine to the stump, although it has drill holes so you can. If you are splitting an already small log, you can steady it by holding with your non dominant hand about mid way down, and a few light taps on top to "set" the piece, then you can let go & use your full force to give it a couple of good whacks. It does make a pleasant ringing sound. First time I've actually ever enjoyed splitting wood!

The quality of this tool is the best I've ever seen in a cast iron device. Makes splitting kindling a breeze. Highly recommend.
