Nice Pen, But.....
by Cardinal Computers (3 out of 5 stars)
July 19, 2017

As much as I want to give this cool and helpful device 5 stars, The quality just isn't there. When I first got it out of the package, I put it on charger for a bit and then after a while, I tested it out and it would not move much at all. There was not much pressure being put against the the tip of the pen.

I shut the pen off and decided to take it apart only to find that the ink cartridge holder had come apart. The magnet, the spring and the plastic piece were separated. They weren't broken so I put them back into the proper placement that I felt they belonged. And it worked well for a few minutes and then it came apart again. Further investigation lead me to believe that there must have been type of glue that should've held these parts together. If there wasn't any glue supposed to be added then it is something that needs to be fixed because the magnet would only be held into the plastic by friction alone. Luckily, I have some very strong epoxy on hand to bind these 3 pieces together and it seems to be working wonderfully as well.

If you plan on buying this pen just be aware of this issue. It's a great pen otherwise. I do apologize if it was a bit confusing to follow along. It's hard to explain unless you are looking at it.

Sucks.

As an avid stippler, this is a great concept, one that me and a buddy thought about inventing for years. The first one I ordered had a problem with the charging port. To my surprise they replaced it free of charge a year or two after I purchased it. The new one however has stopped working after only a few short uses. The spring inside has fallen out. As great of an idea this is, for me personally, it's a real pain when you get stuck in the middle of a huge piece of art and having to deal with return issues. I think it's time to go back to the old school technique. Disappointed.

Update:

Sometimes I received my third one and after the first use the pin stopped working. To my surprise I was offered a FOURTH REPLACEMENT. Finally came in the mail and I started a new, very important drawing. Twenty minutes in I noticed the ink was fading. So I went to replace the ink cartridge and low and behold the new one stopped working too. The motor clicks but the pen doesn't move. I don't understand why I'm not seeing more comments of this nature. Why is it happening to me? Again, great idea but to good to be true.

Fair Tool overall

This was introduced to me by another artist several months ago and I purchased one. I have used it for several time-intensive pieces. As a professional artist, I've found limited use for the pen but it does have applications for specific kinds of mark making (and not just stippling), much like a mechanic needs certain specialized tools for certain jobs. For the stippling enthusiastic/hobbyist, however, I can see the appeal.

Highly recommended.

Awesome pen! If you are new or seasoned to pointillism or stipple this is a must have pen for your artistic instruments. As long as you remember to give the mechanism room to move (don't put the pen on the paper), the pen creates a hypnotic rhythm and super fast results. Highly recommended. Looking forward to future colors!

Worked for one day
by Hobbitopoly (2 out of 5 stars)

Bought this for my daughter. It worked great for about a day, then the nib stopped moving up and down. I disassembled it to try to figure out the problem, but ultimately decided to return it. I'm going to purchase another one, since she liked it so much, but if the second one breaks, then that's the end of this experiment!

Not a fan.
by K Anderson (2 out of 5 stars)

Pen works like it says. I only give it two stars because most stipple pens have a tiny nib and it's dry the second you put the dot down. This is a gel tip, so the dots aren't fine and look sloppy and it takes forever to dry. I did some dots 24 hours ago and went to erase the pencil lines and the dots completely smeared all over the paper. Not a fan! I'll stick to my KOH-I-NOOR Rapidograph pens.

Cheaply made
by Peter (2 out of 5 stars)

Bought it as a gift. Seemed to be working when I tested it out but the on/off button stuck in place after only a couple of uses. Everything thing on the pen seems flimsy and cheaply made. Could be a great product if the quality was better.

Dotspen adds a new technique to watercolor paintings
by Bob from Seattle (5 out of 5 stars)
January 27, 2018

My Dotspen lets me do artwork that I never would have done without it. The white dots allow me to add very realistic waves splashing onto rocks. Most white pens will not work on watercolor paintings because the ink runs or soak up watercolor and the white is white no more. Not so with Dotspen. It leaves a whit dot. In water color, use the dots pen last for a really sharp effect. I will demo the Dotspen this at the next art class!

I really want to like this product
by Kirandeep (1 out of 5 stars)

Straight out of the box not working. I tried everything by the book but I see the motor inside moving but not the nib. Upon inspecting I see a small spring attached to the magnet of the motor, I tried placing it properly and also inside the nib holder. But its not working. I'll change my rating when I get help. I really want to like this product.

So easy to use.
by Jean (5 out of 5 stars)

Love love love this product. The battery does not last for me for more than 15 or 20 minutes. But if I am wanting to use it longer, I work with the pen while it's plugged in. I use this pen for going over parts of my sketch I want to stand out before I use watercolor. The ink is not water-soluble. I really enjoy refining a drawing with this pen.
