Monkiibars Seem like a such a simple and elegant product for those seeking a means of working out in nature or just hotel rooms while on the road. I originally bought them for my son so he could workout in his small Manhattan apt and perhaps nearby Central Park.
But my son didn't get into it. He said the door adaptor it was destroying the door frames in his apartment. This is partly because his doors open inward. The result is a lot of door flex, strain, and friction on the fame. Hmm. Well, he decided to preserve his apartment's security deposit and brought them home so I could give them a try. They were expensive so someone ought to use them right? I was so excited I even bought a very useful workout e-guide. Which is awesome by the way. The entire setup is obviously top quality. And the website is nothing short of inspiring. All those fit young people running around the hills working out. A millennial's dream. Good stuff. Bravo.
But then I realized I don't enjoy being a public spectacle when I workout, and that it was quite difficult to find a friendly door in my own home or on the road, and that our trees don't appreciate Monkiibars.
Ultimately, the product doesn't work for me because I don't want to be seen conspicuously straining in public. This is on me. Vanity. My bad. While I support the idea of promoting health and fitness in public I don't think I'm a good ambassador. Even if I was in excellent shape its not in my nature to show-off. Also, it takes me longer to set the bars up than it does to work out. I'm sure you get much better at this with time. It's been very hard to find a friendly door frame from which to secure it. Most doors seem to open into the room where you want to workout, but you really need to be on the outward side of a door to feel secure, avoid flex, and minimize damage to the door itself. I don't want to be in the hotel hallway. I want to be in my hotel room. What about working out outside? As for tossing this over a tree branch... well, I got covered in wet debris, and I didn't like the way the lines saw into the branches with repeated use. Guess you need special work-out friendly trees adjoining running trails free from snakes or poison oak. And you have to be okay with making a branch wave around in the air as you work out in public. Again, it made me feel quite conspicuous. "Look at me.... I'm wrestling a tree".
So it turns out I'm not adventurous, or patient, or confident enough to use Monkiibars. This said. I really admire anyone who is committed to using Monkiibars. You're my hero. You're a much bigger person than I. I'd like to believe I'd probably feel quite different about this wonderful product if I had the time to run around the hills in nice weather like they do in the videos. But I'm a slave to convention who has a regular job.
LIBERATING!

I received a pair of Electric Blue monkii bars for Christmas from my fiancée. I never knew how liberating a simple set of workout tools could be! I'm a former gym rat who's gained some weight since we had our daughter about 2 years ago. I know some people can do it but, with having to juggle work, school, a side business, and spending equality time with family, it doesn't leave a whole lot of time or desire to drive over to the gym. I have rafters in my garage and I leave these set up permanently in lieu of the gym rings I had in there - these are infinitely easier to set up and adjust and provide the same variety of exercises as rings do. I just throw the Spectra line over and loop through the "friction" attachment.
THE BUILD
In short, they are amazing! The finish of the wood is top notch and feels good to grab and grip. I had thought they would've been too slippery to do exercises like muscleup's, but I've been doing them without any added difficulty. The hollow of the grips are aircraft grade aluminum and feel as if I can chuck them down a cliff without breaking the core. The line, probably the most important part of the monkii bar system, is a Spectra line, normally used for rock climbing. It resist wearing, fraying, and is rated to support up to 220 pounds. I'm right up at that limit at 215 pounds and have had no problems doing explosive movements. All in all, these things are SOLID and could (should!) be used anywhere you can.
As an aside, the packaging is great as well. They include a set of digital training manual for free that cater to a specific environment you plan on using these in (e.g. Park, House, Office, etc.). What a great bonus!
my monkii bars ate my gym membership

OUT OF THE BOX
I bought theses little guys (Dark Bars w/ Green Plugs) a few months back, and have been waiting to post a full review until I could really put them through their paces. Out of the box they were incredibly solid, like you could drive over them with your car and they wouldn't break, they had nice feel-in-hand, and the wood was gorgeous.
MY MOTIVATION
I didn't use them too much for about the first month, but then I let my gym membership expire and they turned into my go-to workout. Since then I have taken my monkii bars pretty much everywhere with me. They say they are portable, and they are right!
HOW THEY PERFORM
In short, they are awesome. They took a little getting used to, but they soon became something that I am using several times a week, and now I LOVE them. It's winter right now, and my outdoor workout opportunities have been somewhat limited, but I'm getting really good and finding little secret spots to setup my bars and get in a great workout. Btw, the online video library has tons of movement examples, and workouts in it--similar to the TRX DVD, but better.
WHAT I'D CHANGE
I wish they came in other colors.
I wish it came with the door anchor (monkii branch), even if it ups the cost, because it makes indoor workouts simple.
I wish the adjuster had a more detailed online video of it's use. It's easy to use now, but I thought it was kind of hard the first few times.

These are unbelievably high quality suspension bars that I have used for almost 6 months now. Even in the cold I want to use them and I live in Wisconsin. They are very versatile, easy to carry and run with, and very quick at setting up. Even the customer support group is awesome. It may sound to good to be true, but they are all they are meant to be, a very functional piece of equipment that you want to continually use.
