Made with magic! Literal magic...because that's the only way to get blue strawberries

These were awesome until I ate a few of them....then I started having rainbow colored farts. It was a real bummer, because people started following me around taking pictures of me. I mean, who needs that kind of attention? Fortunately my trusty unicorn was close by so I could gallop away to safety.

Still reading? Hopefully it's not because you believed the rainbow gas story above. If you did, then you are the target market for multi colored strawberry seed sellers because these are 100% fake. Maybe they will grow normal red strawberries...I don't know. But they will NOT grow blue, green, yellow, or purple strawberries.

This whole thing with the color strawberries started in 2004 when scientists in Thailand genetically modified strawberries using DNA from fish to make a strawberry that was more resistant to cold temperatures than normal strawberries. The results don't really discuss the strawberries being blue. It simply says that the subcloning vectors used were pT7blue and pT7blue2. (Subcloning is the process of taking the fish DNA and moving it into the strawberry DNA) But using those DNA sources doesn't mean the resulting product will actually be BLUE. The scientists weren't trying to make a blue strawberry either. Nor is anyone using this process to develop one. Nor could you.

That 2004 study can be found by doing a google search. The title is "Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of modified antifreeze protein gene in strawberry" (Clear your scheduled before reading that. It's 11 pages of science that will keep you riveted to your screen! Especially when you get to the part highlighting which DNA sequences have been swapped. Sorry, there are no pictures of the blue strawberries in that study. Just the plants, which are a normal green.)

In any case scammers took the news of that study and often cite it as proof of the existence of blue strawberries, and then it morphed into other colors over the years. Now you can find listings for every color of strawberries you can think of. The white ones with the red seeds are actually real, but they are called pineberries.

As for the pictures above, take note of some of the tell tale signs of photoshopping. The green, blue, and purple starberries are the best examples. Look at the leafs on the top of each berry. The green strawberries have a deeper green leaf than normal, the blue ones have a purple leaf, and the purple ones have a pink leaf. Why is that? It's because the photoshop technique used here is one where you change the pigmentation of the entire image, not the more time consuming one where you meticulously only change the color of the specific pixels you want to change.

When you change the hue of the entire image it turns the color of the red strawberry to whatever you want, but it turns the color of other things into something else. In this case, the green leaves turned to darker green and purples. You'll also notice that the purple strawberries are in a box labeled FRESH STRAWBERRIES. But that label is the EXACT same color as the purple strawberries. That happens when you change the hue of the image. The original red strawberries and red text on the box both turned into an unnatural shade of purple.

Then of course there is the whole matter of importing unregulated seed material into the United States. (With a 4-6 week shipping time, it's a pretty solid bet that these are not originating inside the USA) But from what I understand the agents of the United States Customs Service, Environmental Protection Agency, and Food and Drug Administration are just delightful to deal with over these matters. So you might end up making lots of new friends.

Of course if these have a proper Phytosanitary Certificate (documentation that says the USFDA has approved the importation of the seeds) included in the packaging then you will have nothing to worry about. I don't see anything in the product listing about a Phytosanitary Certificate being included though...that seems like it'd be a big selling point....hmmm...weird....
