No wasted motion .....
by Gary D. Langley (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this device to do simple activity tracking and sleep tracking. I didn't want the bloat of functionality that some watches have. I liked this one partially for the analog look to it and I was attracted to the 8 month projected battery life. I liked the simplicity of the interface in the app. I've only had it a few days and I love it. I had a minor problem setting it. I notified Withings customer service. They quickly replied with a suggestion that solved my issue. This device is doing exactly what I wanted with no "wasted motion", no wasted functionality. It is comfortable to wear, simple to use, motivating. I will update this review after additional use if anything noteworthy changes.

Great Style, Cheap Band, Horrible Sleep Tracking, Horrible Customer Support, Mediocre App, Closed Ec
by Dusty (3 out of 5 stars)

Here are my initial thoughts after owning this for 11 days now.

First, I want to start by stating that I have owned an Apple Watch Sport for a year now. While I have had fun with it for the past year, but the novelty has worn off for me. For starters it is bulk, heavy, not really that great looking, and just seems to constantly interrupt my life with notifications and information.

I was eyeing the Activite Pop when the Apple Watch was announced, but decided against it. So, as I grew tired of my Apple Watch, I turned back to Withings and saw they released the Steel and decided to give it a try. I have to say that this thing looks really sleek and stylish. I actually like it more than the Apple Watch as far as form goes. The round dial, simple minimalistic markings, and steel case and hands make this look very nice. If you pair this with a nice leather strap it really makes it look great.

This leads me to the included watch band/strap. First, the thing is cheap as heck. For $170, they could include a much nicer band. The material is very cheap and uncomfortable. I used to think that Apple's fluoroelastomer was a joke, but there is a huge difference in comfort between the materials. Even the buckle and loop are crappy, with sharp edges that kept catching on things or stabbing me. The first thing you will want to do is buy some replacement straps.

The only style element that I am not pleased with is the 18mm strap width. It is obvious that Withings was trying to strike a balance between male and female sizing and decided to try and strike a balance. The end result is that watch bands are not quite as easy to find at this size, most are female oriented, and on a thicker wrist the watch band looks just a bit too dainty for my taste. I would prefer a 20mm or 22mm strap width for my wrist, so I wish they made this in two different sizes.

As for performance, the watch seems to measure steps relatively accurately. I state relatively as I seem to log about 40-100 steps while I am sleeping, so it is not the most accurate. My Fitbit would always show less than 10 and I charged my Apple Watch at night (since it doesn't do sleep tracking), so I can't speak to how it compares in this regard.

As for sleep tracking, well this is a complete joke. Out of the 11 nights I have slept with the watch on, it has only tracked sleep 5 nights. This is less than 50% of the time that it has accurately identified that I actually slept. Out of the 5 nights it said I slept, 3 of them it said I slept less than 4 hours (which is about 3-6 hours off depending on the night). Only 1 night (the first night oddly enough) did it actually log my sleep correctly. So as far as I am concerned, it has tracked my sleep accurately 9% of the time I have owned it.

Because of this poor performance, I opened a support case with Withings and it was closed the following day without anyone contacting me. I replied to that email and never heard back. I then opened a second ticket and had not heard back as of 7 days later. I also opened up 3 other tickets about other questions and issues and have yet to hear back on those after 8 days. I just reached out to them on Twitter to see if that helps, but as far as I am concerned anything over a 1-2 day response time for a $170 product is pretty bad customer service.

The app seems to be syncing periodically in the background, but I try to open it a few times a day to make sure it keeps things synced up. That was definitely a nice feature of the Apple Watch, never having to worry about the steps syncing. The app syncs steps and sleep activity with the Health app in iOS. One odd thing I notice is that sometimes the time shown under my step count is a couple hours in the past, even though the app claims to have synced everything up to the current moment.

I was disappointed to see that you can only log weight automatically if you have the Withings scale and to log calories you have to use MyFitnessPal. The app does not read from Health, so if you use other apps or devices it will not sync back to the Health Mate app. For example, I log my food using LoseIt and I have the Fitbit Aria scale. I have to manually log my weight in the Withings app (even though MyFitnessPal is synced with my scale) or I can go and buy another $100 WiFi scale, which seems ridiculous to me. I don't know if I want to abandon all my food logging history by switching apps, so I haven't yet made the move.

In the end, I haven't decided if I am going to keep the watch. Part of me is frustrated with the support experience and this is making me question if I should keep it. The app itself could use several improvements and the lack of support for LoseIt and Fitbit Aria (or an API to load these data points) is also pretty annoying to me and has created a disconnected experience for me as a user. Lastly, the lack of accurate sleep tracking is another issue for me. Basically, if I keep it, then ii is most likely due to style and not function.

Beautiful, elegant solution to activity tracking.
by Liam (5 out of 5 stars)

I love this thing. It's one of the best purchases I've made all year!

First and foremost, it's a beautiful piece of equipment. It looks classy and stylish. People are shocked when I tell them it's an activity tracker. It's goes with everything and is very comfortable to wear 24/7 (which I do). It's been five months on the original battery (using a daily alarm) and it's still going. It even goes in my daily shower, no problems.

Plan on swapping out the band. I used a steel mesh one from an old Skagen. Any watch band of proper size will do. Also plan on getting the plastic protector for the glass. These things do get knocked around a bit.

The OS app is fine. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done. It's been very reliable.

Accuracy. Hmmm, there seems to be some grips about it with this watch. And I can understand it as my wife has a Fitbit and she consistently reports more steps than I, even when we've done the same thing ALL day (and her gate is longer than mine). However, the distances walked are about the same.

I don't know for sure which is more accurate step-wise, but the Fitbit definitely counts more. Math wise, the Withings is accurate. My gate is 2.5 feet and it measures a mile at 2000 steps. That equals 5000 feet, which is about a mile. Also. I've measured it over known distances and it's accurate.

But in the end, it doesn't really matter. Unless you're a pro athlete, the race is only with yourself. Your daily improvement is what's important. So long as the results are consistently reported, it's the delta that counts, not necessarily the end result.

The sleep tracking is not the best. I fall asleep almost instantly most nights, and it usually registers about 10 minutes afterwards. But then again it registers my wake time 10 minutes late too. So again, it's more about the improvement in the results than the actual results that count. Or the trends that are identifed over time.

Lastly, and this goes for all trackers, they are motivating. Every morning I look down at that little dial after the silent alarms goes off and it shows zero steps. It gets me up and moving to take my daily walk. And through out the day, that little dial keeps me going for more steps. If I'm a little short midday, I keep a pair of walking shoes under my desk. I take the stairs instead of the elevator. I walk to a coworkers desk when a phone call would have done. If the steps are below my goal towards the end of the day, I'll walk around the house. It's making me a healthier person.

Okay, if you're a serious health nut and want a serious piece of measuring equipment with multiple types of tracking, this ain't it. But if you want an elegant tracking solution to complement you through out your day, the Withings has that in spades.

I really wanted to like this activity tracker

I really wanted to like this activity tracker. I love the look of it, but it is very inaccurate as far as counting steps. Out of the 6600 steps I took to test it, it read only 4800. Not even close.

Best tracker for my lifestyle!
by Miki Laurent (5 out of 5 stars)

I love this watch/tracker. I had used the Withings Pulse in the past but was dissatisfied with how easy it was to misplace and that it was not water resistant. This solved those issues for me, plus it's a really nice looking watch in its own right. The large face is stylish but does not overwhelm my arm, several people have complimented the watch, not realizing it was a fitness tracker! The sleep tracker is great, I love that it tracks everything automatically and syncs with the app via Bluetooth. The silent alarm works well, it wakes me up and doesn't bother my spouse at all. I thought I would hate the silicone wristband, and had planned to order a different strap, but I quickly got used to it and now have no plans to order a different type. I am rough on it, banging it against things and getting it wet many times a day, has a couple scratches of course but it still looks great and keeps good time. All in all, highly recommend over any tracker currently on the market.

Be careful, watch breaks down and difficult to get replacement
by J N (1 out of 5 stars)

I loved the watch. Love that it looks like a classic watch, that I could change out the bands, and that it fit any occasion.

I tracked my steps and sleep daily. Then it stopped syncing. Contacted Nokia customer service. They suggested I restart bluetooth, reset the phone, make sure it vibrates, change my battery - repeated this over and over again. Phone under a year old, still under warranty, but customer service repeatedly asking me to go through same steps. Did all of it - no sync. Last recommendation was to see if phone works with a different ios or android (I have Nougat, and it worked with that). So let's see, I have to get a different phone to make this work, or regress to a previous version of Android?

Please!

Why can't Nokia just replace this watch?

Be careful before you buy!

Functional and Elegant Design
by nomad (5 out of 5 stars)

I have tried a number of activity trackers over the last ten years. I have accidentally flushed a few sleek Fitbits down the toilet and got used to taking my chunky Polar units off my writs before I put on my jacket. As a very long term user, I found myself looking for something a bit elegant. There are many units that pack lots of features but look too chunky to wear all the time. So I decided to get Withings Activité Steel to use at all times except when I am working out. The analog dial is easy to read even if I don't have my eyeglasses on to correct my astigmatism. The unit has a replaceable battery with a rated life of 8 months! The watch and the silicone strap it ships with are both water proof. More stylish leather straps are available for a modest additional cost. It reliably syncs up over Bluetooth with the Nokia/Withings App which in turn syncs up with Apple Health. The app provides a nifty way to twirl the hour and minute hands to make sure they tell the time correctly. The only feature I miss is a back light for night time use. The sleep tracking is pretty good. I am not using the step count or sleep in any highly detailed manner so accuracy of +- 5% is fine for me. I also own and use the Withings scale and their blood pressure cuff. They are all quite intuitively designed and the App does a good job of displaying all the data. I have read that many watches that have PPG sensors for wrist based heart rate sensing don't actually use the HR data to project calories burned. My experiments with such units were a bit disappointing. I was getting highly unreliable PPG sensor readings when I was running and battery life is always an issue. So I decided to forgo that version. I use the Polar units with a chest strap when I need to track heart rate reliably and keep Withings Activité Steel on at all other times.

Beautiful, functional, and durable.

Before buying this product, I probably did close to 100 hours of research on hybrid smartwatches on the market - current and future. Garmin was too clunky, Fossil was too fragile. Nowa and the other Kickstarter-fubded ones were too expensive and untested. The Withings Activité Steel does everything I want it to do - and nothing that I don't. I've had smartwatches that distracted me with notifications, interesting features, and bright lights. I just wanted something that told time, counted steps, and measured sleep. This does all of those things superbly.

The app is intuitive and motivational without being too naggy. It does advertise their products rather heavily, but that's something I expect and am able to ignore.

The only thing I wish this watch had is a second hand, but not enough to be a deal breaker.

so good. It is very stylish
by Chris (4 out of 5 stars)
April 29, 2017

I have had this watch for 3 days now. So far, so good. It is very stylish, lightweight, and it utilizes quick release straps. I just ordered a leather strap from Barton on amazon, should have it by Monday. Setting up the watch through the app was pretty easy to do. The app is very intuitive and easy to use. You can set up how many steps you want to complete through the app, and the meter on the watch will tell you how far you have come on your daily goal. Once you have completed it, you will receive a notification on your phone letting you know that you have hit your goal. The app allows you track to other things like sleep and swimming, but I have yet to use these. The watch is rated at 50 meters water resistance, so it can be used in the pool. One of the reasons I purchased this item was because you could take it swimming. A watch should be water resistant, and there are too many fitness trackers out there that cannot go in the water. This fitness watch tells you the time, keeps track of your steps, and can be used to swim, exactly what I wanted a fitness tracker to do. If your needs are simple like mine, this is the perfect device for you. If you require HR monitors and more advanced features, look elsewhere. Hope this review helps in your search.

Totally enjoying this tracker!
by Susan (4 out of 5 stars)

LOVE this tracker thus far! Very comfortable to wear, looks stylish and I have received many compliments. I also like to watch the tracker function go from zero to 100, and start over!

As I also use CPAP and have an app monitoring my sleep I wasn't too worried about tracking that. I have discovered that the sleep tracking function doesn't jibe with my CPAP data as to length of time sleeping. However perhaps it does give clues as to whether I am restless while asleep, which is why the length of time sleeping doesn't seem to match. I would love more information on how they track or what the tracker uses as data to determine sleep and the levels of sleep it says it tracks. On one occasion it said I was sleeping but I was reading the news.

As I don't run unless it's to save others or myself from an horrific event, I do not have experience with the runner tracking. However tracking my walking is very handy in helping me to analyze how much I am walking and motivating me to walk more. I really like to see the dial move up.

I did have a little difficulty getting the three taps to acknowledge and show me the alarm time. But eventually I found the sweet spot and it worked.
