Problems after a year, customer sercice is awful
by JH (2 out of 5 stars)
October 20, 2018

Worked well for about a year. Fairly lightweight and good power output and lasted well between charges. After a year capacity diminished significantly and fittings became so loose it was impossible to recharge or use with an a/c device. Customer service consisted of: "thank you, for letting us know. we will tell our designers and engineers. Unfortunately you are outside of the warranty period. No we dont give partial credit for defective products. There is no way for you to call and speak with somebody. Please order on amazon".

For such an expensive product it's unforgivable. We biught 5 and all became unusable within a year. And terrible customer service.

Somfigure you'll get anyear -18 months of usability and then throw it out.

BE WARNED!
by Kevin J. O'Mara (1 out of 5 stars)

Arrived defective. Display not working correctly (see photos) and now not working at all. Impossible to tell how much charge is left or if the device is charging when plugged in. Customer service is lacking. No response yet on my request to exchange for a replacement. Be warned. Poor quality review and poor customer service.

Update: Anker still refuses to refund my money and/or send me a replacement. Their "help" was to remind me to press the button if I wanted the display to light up. Duh! THE DISPLAY DOESN'T WORK! REPLACE THIS UNIT!

Update 5/19 8 days after I was promised a new unit, there is still no replacement despite Anker's promises to replace the unit.

Campers with CPAPs, REJOICE!
by Dudely Abider (5 out of 5 stars)
April 28, 2016

Mine arrived this week, got it for $100 off with the promo. Still pricey, but more tolerable at $400.

I bought this almost exclusively for the purpose of having portable power for car camping at campgrounds where power isn't available. I use a CPAP (Respironics Auto 50 series, no humidifier) and while I CAN sleep without it, it's not a pleasant experience. My hope in purchasing this unit is that I can now expand the camping options available to us to include no power sites. I really love camping.

My first test was simply charging it up to the full 30 hour capacity and run my CPAP for 8 hours on the AC plug. After 8 hours of running the CPAP, the PowerHouse still had 24 hours of charge left on it, so theoretically it could run my CPAP for 4 nights before requiring a recharge. I plugged it back in to recharge this morning and it was back to a full 30 hour reserve in about 90 minutes. I am impressed.

I also tried hooking up a small fan (Honeywell HT-900 TurboForce equivalent) running on high. While the fan runs, It is apparent that the Anker unit is not designed to power this item to the degree that a wall outlet can, and on full power the fan ran as if on the lowest setting. Furthermore, the available power of the Anker dropped from 30 hours to 29 in a matter of minutes.

EDIT 4.29 - On a whim, plugged the fan, the CPAP, and a cellphone in to verify just how long the unit would last from full charge. After the reserve dropped from 30 hours down to about 9 in about 90 minutes, it leveled off and drained at the reported rate. This combination of devices will last about 10 hours before the Anker needs recharging.

My next test will be added later, with the CPAP connected to the 12v outlet using a 12v adapter (Part Number 1001956). After doing some reading, my conclusion is that the 12v option will be more efficient and therefore use a little less power. I will report on that test next week.

EDIT 05.03.2016 - Using the DC power adapter for my CPAP, I ran it for 7 hours, along with a phone being charged. According to the readout on the PowerHouse, it only used one hour of charge for the entire night. This amazes me. I had no idea how much more efficient the 12v option would be, but it clearly is, and means there is practically no limit to the number of days I can take this camping with my CPAP.

I envision using the PowerHouse as an intermediary power storage option if I am faced with an extended power outage. We have a propane-powered generator that I would use to charge this during the day, when the noise of a generator is more tolerable, and then use the Anker at night for running my CPAP and charging phones.

As others have mentioned, this unit seems solid and well-built. Objections to it being called a "generator" notwithstanding, it "generates" power for my intentions as expected and does so in a compact, highly portable, easily (if not quickly) replenished manner. As with many "convenience" items, the price reflects the awareness of the manufacturer that yes, there are other options, but they have identified a niche and know that the people who will find this device intriguing and useful are probably going to be willing to pay a premium for that convenience. I am one of those people.

I think Anker would do well to follow the suggestion of one of the commenters here, and equip future models to swap out depleted Li-ion components, perhaps in a way that made it possible to use other Anker battery products in a modular fashion, or expand the power capacity with some sort of backplane. That would be a feature that made the price absolutely and unequivocally in line with the functionality.

Great idea but I need more from Anker.
by Max Power (3 out of 5 stars)

Pros:
-Easy to use. Power button for each output with status indicators. There is no auto off for the outputs so make sure you turn them off when you are not using them. There will be a small power draw if you leave the output on.
-Weight is low for power capacity (compared to sealed lead acid). The Goal Zero Yeti 400 with similar power density is around 30 pounds compared to less than 10 for the Anker.
-Plenty of USB ports for charging.

Neutral:
-AC inverter power is limited to around 160 watts
-Only one AC power port
-Handle is not removable
-No expansion possibility - Would be cool to be able to expand the capacity in some way. Either by adding a second Powerhouse or some expansion unit.
-Battery cannot be serviced - There is no easy way to replace the battery when they wear out. Batteries are a wear item and will usually wear out before the other electronics do so this makes the useful life of this piece of electronic equipment limited.

Cons:
-LCD is too simple. There is not enough detail to determine the charge level accurately. In my testing I used a 40 watt load on the AC inverter and the time does not update quickly enough. For example, I plugged in my 40 watt load into the AC port and the unit displayed 30 hours for a couple minutes. It deducted around 1 hour about every 10 minutes and finally showed the true time value after about an hour. That means you won't know the true time remaining unless you wait for a while with your load plugged in.

I also expected the 40 watt load to last about 8 hours (estimating for some power loss during the DC to AC conversion) but it drained it completely after 5.5 hours.
-AC inverter is very inefficient. I only got around 50% efficiency with a 40 watt load. Specification shows that the battery capacity is 434 watt-hours but I measured about 240 watt-hours in my testing of the AC inverter.
-Very little documentation. There is no mention of this item on the Anker website. Nothing in the store page or in their support section. I had to piece together information from the label on the unit and from other reviews on Amazon.

Suggestions for improvement:
-Add a power meter to the LCD that shows charge and drain in watts. It is too vague to use a time value and a simple bar graph. The only reason I knew the LCD was wrong is because I had a power meter inline with my loads. Someone who did not do the calculation manually only has the time value in the Lcd to go off of.
-Use more efficient AC inverter. Only getting 50% of the battery capacity from the AC inverter is wasting too much power.
-Provide support documentation on the website. There needs to be better documentation on this product.

Overall I think it is good to see Anker coming out with a product like this. I use many other Anker products like their USB cables and portable USB chargers and I really like their products overall. I was hoping this unit could replace my Goal Zero Yeti 400 (that I recently sold because it is just too heavy) since that unit is very heavy but the features on the Anker just don't match up to my needs. The Anker unit is much lighter in weight and that was my reason for wanting to try this unit out. However, the AC port is limited to 160 watts and is not very efficient.

I also would have liked a more detailed LCD screen that showed how much power in watts was coming in and how much load is on the battery. The display showing the capacity in hours is a nice idea but it needs to update faster in order to be useful. I can see someone plugging in something and assuming the unit will last 20 hours when it should read much lower (which it will eventually show the correct number it just takes anywhere between 10-30 minutes).

Finally I would like to see manufacturers have some consideration for the serviceability of their products. Especially when the product is as expensive as this portable power supply. The battery is a wear item and it should have a way to be serviced. Another reviewer has opened their unit and showed that there is no practical way to replace a dead battery. Serviceability of the battery will allow users to reuse the electronics that aren't worn out and prevent creating extra electronics waste from being created.

I purchased this unit with my own money with the intention of using it for camping, road trips, and occasional use at home. However after trying it for a couple weeks I will be returning it and looking for another solution to meet my needs. I really hoped that Anker was going to check all the boxes, I guess I will have to wait and see if version 2 or another product from them will be better.

Used mainly for Cpap
by Rick (5 out of 5 stars)
April 14, 2018

I just purchased this product from Amazon, so I am going to give some quick feedback of how I used it so far. I charged it up and plugged in my Resmed Airsense 10 Cpap device with the ac adaptor. I had the heating tube and the humidifier on. It lasted exactly 6 hours. Next night I turned off the humidifier and took off the heated tube and it lasted 3 nights at 7 hours (on average) on a full charge. This product worked wonderfully. I had to test it out quickly because I am going camping for 2 nights with my son for boy scouts soon. I also looked into other reviews on using it with the 12 volt adaptor, but I have to buy a whole new power unit. I just need the 12 volt attachment (which ResMed does not sell separately). That's another 80 dollars I'm not shelling out for this. And to the people whining that "It's too heavy". It's a BATTERY PACK used to charge small devices. It's 9 and a half pounds, get over it. I will give an update on other uses with the power house at a later time. So far I love it. Its small and it is built solid.

UPDATE--- I ended up shelling out the 80 dollars for the 12 volt adapter. It was worth the purchase. Instead of getting 3 nights out of the Powerhouse. I am able to get an extra night with the adapter. I used it on a couple cold nights and I was afraid to use the heated tube for both nights, cause I had nowhere to recharge it. The second night I turned on the heated tube at 65 (which helped immensely) and only used 48 percent and the machine was on for 8 and a half hours. Now I know I can use it for 2 full nights with the heated tube on 65 and no humidifier. No more breathing in cold air for me. That is not an experience I want to go through again. Wearing the mask intensifies the cold air and is very unpleasant.

As a reliabile power source, this device can not be matched.

This works. I've dragged this thing all over the place. It is rugged, and puts up with just about everything you would expect.

Best test so far was to bring it camping where 7 families (that's a total of 30 phones and tablets) all were able to stay topped off simply using this charger. And best of all, in the 5 days it was in use, the battery level dropped from 30hrs to only 23 hours. Many times we had multiple phones charging off a Y Cable from a port and at the highest, we had 6 devices all charging at once. Used the 12v port for running air mattress pumps. Used the 110 socket for charging camera batteries.

Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it is heavy. But holy cow does it last.

A bang up job - Anker does it again!
by D. Carr (5 out of 5 stars)
July 2, 2018

As always, Anker has put out a superior product - and it's totally worth the $499 I paid for this thing. Unit powered my CPAP while camping (sans heater and heated tube) with mobile device and vape battery also connected for two days before requiring a recharge - and I probably could have pulled one more day out of it!

My *only* complaint is that I cannot find a proper barrel adapter to connect this to my solar kit - the closest I have will fit in some Dell laptops, but that's a fraction of a millimeter off from fitting correctly in the DC In port on this unit. Still, that's not entirely Anker's fault - and come to find out, it's a hard part to find for the consumer!

EDIT: Downgraded to four stars, ONLY because there is no adapter for a solar kit at all that's going to fit - at least, nothing I've been able to find. Heard scuttlebutt that they're releasing a panel, though - so stay tuned. I'll bump back to five stars once it comes out.

EDIT AGAIN: Back up to five stars. I can wait for the solar charger. Back up because, while running a Resmed 10 at 16/11 and no heaters, I got three full nights of sleep on this thing before I bottomed out and had to recharge - after using it to air up my mattress.

Changes the way I use my computer and iPads for the BEST!
by F/X (5 out of 5 stars)
May 13, 2017

This thing is amazing. I can power 3 iPads for 2-3 days non stop. I almost want one to carry to the coffee shop so I don't have to look for a plug. Its great for the outdoor patio. Powers my new MacBook touch bar 15 inch pro perfectly with my ipads to. But I haven't tested how long it will last with the MacBook plugged in. Fantastic product and looks like a portable speaker so I am sure would be fun to bring to a coffee shop to. MacBook batteries don't last a full work session anyways, so no matter where this thing goes with me my MacBook will be charged. Cheers and GL with your purchasing .

A Minor Hiccup, but a Great Utility Charger
by Matt G. (5 out of 5 stars)
November 13, 2017

Ordered 2 thanks to living in an area prone to power outages (thanks, Florida!) and one was DOA. Tried both power adaptors on each with no luck. Contacted Anker, and they immediately provided an RMA... which UPS and Fedex both refused to ship, even via ground. Anker contacted the shipper independently, and requested parcel pickup on my behalf. Picked up no problem, and upon receipt they sent out the replacement which works great. Definitely recommend over my old GoalZero.

Updated - Go with Goal Zero for solar backup or wait for the new Powerhouse and see for solar.
by Daniel G. Caddell (3 out of 5 stars)
April 25, 2018

5/7/2018 - Anker sent me 3 power cables, so I will hopefully be able to splice together some MC4 solar cables and finally get a solar solution. I wish they had included the DC mini cable that has the correct 7.5mm tip (or supply the manufacturer info) on it to plug into the DC power input that reviewer K. moon used to splice his solar cable together. I'm not sure why I didn't get one in mine.

Never supported solar which is why I purchased in 2016 as it was stated they would support it. The charging cable is way too loose and does not stay in very well. Had Anker send me a new charger to see if was the same and unfortunately they sent one with a bent pin inside which broke when I tried to fix. At least they sent it at no cost to me. Now, unfortunately, it will not charge at all and seems to have died. No readout, no nothing. Now I have a 400 dollar brick. I should have went with Goal Zero. Now I need to see if I can fix it myself as they do not have a place for me to get it fixed.
