So far the best rear view dashcam/gps

I should give 4 stars because there is no Bluetooth and GPS mapping system needs improvements. This is my 3rd rear view camera and so far it's the best one. It runs android 4.4.2 so it's just like the small 5" tablet. Dash cam doesn't freeze like others, system got some hiccups but that's ok since it has only 1GB memory. Mapping programs are pre-installed and not compatible in US. Unable to get it going or update. Trick: I was able to do fresh install of Sygic app. If you go to play store it will tell you that this application it's not compatible with this device. But if you open google play store with web browser and click install, it will install on all of your devices, including dash cam, bingo. Just go to Sygic website and click download app from play store logo and select web browser not play store app. That should do the trick and you got yourself fresh copy that actually works. You can also use google maps but you do need use your cellphone as hot spot. I'm using both. You don't have to be genius to install the mirror it takes about 15 min. or 30 if it's your first time. Oh and it's $75 cheaper then the other brand on amazon for exactly the same product.

Okay, but a few shortcomings keeping it from being great

Overall, for the price, this is an okay device. There are a few issues that keep it from being a great device. See below for details.

Pros:
1. Android operating system offers flexibility. Comes with Google Play Store, and I've been able to install other apps of my choosing. Not all apps are compatible though. Can use Gmail and Chrome browser if you have a way to provide a wifi connection, though I'd rather just use my smartphone.
2. Reasonably clear screen. The resolution doesn't match a high end smartphone but is sufficient for the purpose of this device. The screen is difficult to see on sunny days, but that's a limitation of these types of devices which are half mirrors. If I really need to see the screen, I can tilt the mirror down so it's not reflecting the sun outside the rear window.
3. Relatively easy installation. Just mount the mirror over the existing rearview mirror using the straps, then hide the cables under the rubber trim around the window molding.
4. Responsive capacitative touch screen. Similar responsiveness to using a tablet.

Cons:
1. Video quality is low for both front and rear cameras. The video quality for the front camera is significantly less than expected for 1080p. Do not expect to be able to record license plates. It is enough to record movement of other vehicles, and so it may be sufficient to evidence of fault in the case of an accident with another vehicle. The rear camera is even worse; it's sufficient to see if there is an obstruction when backing up, but don't expect to see any fine detail.
2. Insufficient angle of view on rear camera. If there is a small child standing behind the car off to the side of the camera (at the rear corner of the car), the camera would not see it. So if the purpose of the camera is to prevent backup accidents, this would provide a false sense of security. The camera may show no obstructions, but there could still be a small child behind the car. I may have to see if I can replace the rear camera with one with greater field of view.
3. The Android operating system needs time to boot up before the backup camera is operational. Unless I feel like sitting in my car for a minute after turning on the ignition, I've usually backed up out of my driveway by the time the backup camera turns on. I will probably need to find a way to add an unswitched outlet so that the system is always on (hoping that this device doesn't use enough power to drain the car battery).
4. The GPS module takes five minutes or so to find enough satellites to be usable after first starting the car. This severely limits the usefulness of the navigation software. This may be helped by powering via an unswitched outlet so the unit is always on. Also, having a mobile wifi device may help speed up the GPS as Android can download GPS information via the network.
5. FM transmitter or small built-in speakers are the only audio output option. The device has its own music player app, or you can install Google Play Music or other music apps. This would be great as a music player; however, there's no way to get high quality audio to the car speakers. The built-in speakers are fine for navigation, but as expected, aren't great for music. FM transmitters by nature aren't high fidelity. I wish that this had a headphone jack, so I could plug directly into the car audio system. A bluetooth transmitters would also be nice, but not necessary.

I really wanted to like this. Got a car with no backup camera and that's what I was after. When I saw this, dashcam with backup cam with NAV and based on android, I was like wow, lets get this. Got it installed by a professional as well. Now for the good and bad, the display is good, cameras are good, decent quality. Other than the dashcam and backup cam, rest of the functionality is not usable. Do not buy this for NAV and GPS, almost unusable because of the small keyboard and sygic is way poor compared to google maps or waze. I started noticing it just hangs in the middle of recordings now, switched the SD card and the problem came back once. Overall I am not happy and wanted to return, but with the money I paid for the professional install, not sure what t do.

After 6 to 7 months...

I've been using mine for about 6 to 7 months now and I love it. I've even caught a few accidents on the dash cam. The touch screen responds really well and the quality of the video recorded is better than my old dash camera, and it even records the rear camera as well. No problems so far, and it looks like I wont have any problems for a while. Excellent product!

Works perfectly for what it is intended to - I had a previous rearview mirror that broke down within months of use, but the JunSun seems of higher quality and additional features.

I love it and it gives us a piece of mind while driving, knowing that we are protected with the stealth recording, doesn't come across as visible as other dash cams might be. Exactly what I was looking for!

Can't see anything in day time, it's heavy, need to adjust rear view mirror frequently.

strong reflection in day time, can' really see anything. I will prefer have a seperate viewer then mounting on rear view mirror. Does anyone know how to move the front camera out of the assembly ? I want to try only hang the front camera at the rear view mirror and seat the product on dash board.

Camera has great quality but very hard to get set up. Reads KM instead of MPH. Does not have time zone for central standard time. The DVR time reads a different time than the mirror time. Book that came with camera is completely different book and has nothing to do with the camera I have. There is NO customer support number to call and get live help. If anything changes ill change my feedback but until then I'm very unhappy.

Things were not working properly when I originally purchased this DVR device which gave me lots of frustration and caused me to write a poor review for the seller. I think it's ok but has problems first the maps are out of date Junsun is supposed to send me a map card I assume it's a micro sd second it has a rechargeable battery but only last about 15 minutes so when I shut the truck off mirror goes off and now uses battery so next day battery is dead and it has to go thru reboot and sometimes it will still shut off till battery gets some charge odd because it is plugged in next I have notice bubbles on the mirror I'm really thinking about a return or exchange for a different mirror I think they have others anyway take a chance see how it works for you
