In a tool the size of a pencil, the flint has a built-in fire starter, steel Wool tinder compartment, carbide-tipped glass Breaker, and safety Whistle. Weighing in at less than an ounce and measuring 4.3-Inches long, it's small enough to be carried on a lanyard, in a pocket, or in a pack. Wherever the destination is, it's always nice to have a backup plan.

Overpriced and poor Quality. Don't purchase this item, save your money.

Overpriced and poor Quality. Don't purchase this item, save your money. When I received this item I proceeded to open the part that housed the ferrocerium rod (fire starter) It fell out in small pieces with some crumbled dust particles. There was enough left to start a fire but the rod was so short it was difficult. I can whistle louder than what came with the piece. This product is a piece of junk. I wouldn't pay $5.00 if I had it in my hand before I purchased it. Save your money. And Yes, I'm sending it back.

ANOTHER GREAT SELF DEFENSE AND EMERGENCY TOOL
by Major T. (5 out of 5 stars)

SOG is a great company. I trust everything they make at this point of owning so many of their products. This is another great self defense tool for anyone. I got this for my wife for her walks. The whistle is great, but I'm writing about the tactical steel and its unbreakable power. Plus the fire starting ability for camping or emergency situations. I have tried to get my wife and daughters to carry small knives and kubatons.... but it's tough because of the size and the focus of their walks or.... This is also great for the glove compartment of a car or in the purse/case. It's loud whistling capability is also great in places with people around and in the night at a camp site.

Not great for keychain use but good build.
by By JR (3 out of 5 stars)

It is well built but it is a bit clunkier than expected. The key chain connection is awkward and the size and weight is slightly more than expected. I had originally thought I would add it to my key chain but that is not realistic. I think a few improvements would go a long way including a new connection for the key chain loop, adding a real pen and perhaps shrinking the whole thing just a little. if so the applications could be more. It is built very well and if you are going to put it in a pouch for EDC, leave in a bag or the car, it will be great. Just not a key chain application as I hoped for.

Daily carry
by J. Beaulieu (5 out of 5 stars)

I carry this daily in my front jeans pocket. I attached a Tec P-7 clip to it and it hangs in my pocket along the outside of my leg. I hardly notice it is there. The whistle is loud enough to be heard ~1/4-1/2 down the road. I've not tried to break any glass with the tip. The ferro rod throws sparks, I don't expect a full cascade of them but it throws a spark that in a do or die situation will be more than nothing. A good /additional/ tool in the EDC kit. I wouldn't want to solely rely on this for anything beyond the emergency whistle. The fire needs are always best served by a bic lighter. The glass breaker would be better if it were a bit bigger with something to keep your hand from slipping forward etc.

Another great product from SOG
by Boid1 (5 out of 5 stars)

I have not had the problems others have written about. Doesn't come apart in my pocket, and the ring is solid and has not come apart. Two of the three screw in compartments are sealed with an o-ring. The fire starter produces significant spark and it comes with the steel wool tinder, but I will replace that as steel wool attracts moisture and rust. I will put a small ball of cotton soaked in 100 percent petroleum jelly as that is an awesome tinder and it does not attract moisture. The whistle is not really very effective, but will alert dogs. I have another whistle I carry constantly, so that wasn't a deal breaker for me. I have not tried the glass breaker, but feel it will work well. I will try it out next time I see a junked car. It would work as a self defense tool if you know how to wield it, which most people don't. Fits compact into the hand and is easily concealable.

A Great Tool, But NOT for Keychains
by Carter M. (2 out of 5 stars)
January 20, 2019

I'm a long-time fan of SOG and like the idea of this tool. Its size and portability combined w/ its utility make for a convenient and useful day-to-day addition. However, its appeals have been greatly overshadowed by the weak link in its chain, as after just three days of ownership, it suffered what I'd considered a catastrophic failure.

I don't know whether I just got lucky and received a poorly QC'd product, but before I could even attach the tool to a keychain (as I was examining it in my hands), the keychain ring, the ends of which barely extend into the tool's cylindrical body, came off the tool completely. Never having had a remotely poor experience with an SOG product before, and keeping in mind that I only paid ~$9.50 for this thing, I grabbed some pliers, reattached it, clamping tightly to insert the prongs as deeply as possible, and went on my way.

However, after just three days, I am now left with a ring-less SOG tool, making it impossible to attach it to a keychain. I suppose I'm going to have to use some thin paracord or a more sufficient keychain ring, something SOG should have done for me, and for which I would have happily paid more.

Useful tool marred by poor quality attachment point.
by Meg Houghton (2 out of 5 stars)

The tools on this unit are relatively solid. The striker is easy to use. Though I haven't tested the glassbreaking feature, I presume it would work relatively well. The whistle is just loud enough to be useful. The big problem with the SOG Flint Survival & Defense Tool is that this thing is usually marketed as a keychain attachment, and though there is a keychain attachment point, the small gauge metal used is too easily bendable, and the attachment point will thus fall off when enough rotating force is applied to it. If this is something that you intend to carry inside a backpack or a purse, then it is of little consequence. But if you want to clip it to a pack or attach it to your keys for easy access to the whistle, for instance, you will need to be careful, or you will end up leaving it on a trail or at work.

Poor quality, waste of money!

Ferro rod broken. Unscrewed unit for the first time after opening package, rod fell out in pieces. For the price not worth the hassle of a return. Evidently not worth purchasing to begin with. Definitely would not recommend, unless I really didn't like the person, but probably not even then, can't think of anyone I dislike that much.

Nice little survival tool
by Marbelox (3 out of 5 stars)
May 14, 2017

Nice little survival tool. Uses will be limited and it could be longer to fit my hand better.

The metal loop that allows it to hang from a keychain or whatever constantly popped off until the last time when it was lost in a parking lot. Next year SOG should add a ring through the device instead.

Nice idea, but the flint to strike is low

Nice idea, but the flint to strike is low. I have others that strike a significantly hotter spark with less effort
