The Best Way to Experience VRby Tara Tinnin (5 out of 5 stars)

I use this with my HTC Vive and I love it. The ability to turn and step freely without having to worry about the cable is a game changer, especially in fast moving games. I find it very easy to use as well. I've seen reviews where people claimed that you needed a "VR Caddy" just to get the thing on and off, and I'm wondering if they lack some fundamentals of basic human coordination. Even hot swapping the batteries while wearing it is very easy. VR Performance is great, and the backpack plus computer is very comfortable. The waist belt design (similar to a backpacking backpack) lifts the weight off the shoulders and makes this comfortable to wear almost indefinitely. The only real issue I have with it is that the batteries don't last long enough/charge fast enough to enable true continuous gameplay. By the time the second set is dead, the first set has only charged about halfway. With multiple swaps on partial charges, I probably get about 3-4 hours of gameplay before I have to stop and let the batteries fully charge. Also the only way to see how much battery life is left is to actually lift the headset a little and look at the LEDs on the battery's. I forgot to do this a few times and the system died mid-gameplay.
Many of the reviews I've also seen of this, compare it to other PC gaming computers as opposed to other BACKPACK computers, and while I have not personally tried any of the others I chose this one because it had the best features for the intended purpose of untethered VR. For example, the MSI computer lacks the waist belt, which I imagine would make it ludicrously uncomfortable because when I neglect to snap the waist belt on my Omen, it becomes very uncomfortable after about 10 minutes. Also, with the GTX 1080, this it has the best GPU available in any backpack PC. Its Pricey but its the best thing available right now for the very specific purpose of untethered VR.
THE BEST.

The Omen X by HP is a juggernaut of a computer - powerhouse, reliable, and efficient
are all words that fit the bill. From lightning-quick boot-up times, to running your favorite games
on their Ultra settings, while still getting 150-200+ FPS, this computer is quite possibly one of
the best choices on the market currently. These words of praise don't even mention other
(perhaps "auxiliary") functions and features of the Omen, such as the amazing portability, the
VR capability, and battery life (something that you won't get from a traditional desktop,
obviously). The best summary that I have for this machine is if you imagined combining the
sheer force of a high-end desktop, with all the benefits of a laptop (aside from included monitor).
When greeted with a mean boot-up/restart time of roughly 30 seconds, often times
lower, the first impression was already an astounding one. When compared to my, albeit older, gaming laptop's 3-4 minutes time to boot up and have Steam or BattleNet ready to launch
games, it was like a cold drink of water to slake my thirst. After installing every game in my
library, and booting up many of the much higher intensity games, setting them to Ultra, I was
legitimately surprised at the numbers my FPS counter was clocking. These numbers (mentioned above) have been consistent for the entire time that I have been utilizing this rig. Some of these, multiple of which are admittedly older, include, but are not limited to, Borderlands 2 w/maxed PhysX, GTA V, Overwatch (which on many higher-end rigs still has trouble due to using GPU instead of CPU), Skyrim w/visual mods out the butt, XCOM 2, Dishonored 2, and PAYDAY 2.
Aside from the power that this machine contains and pushes through into your games, it takes
its intensity to VR, as well. Dealing with VR, the computer is almost custom fit for a separate (or included)backpack, that fits the computer on your back, so that range from the computer is never an issue, as it hooks directly onto your person. This mitigates tripping over cords, issues with not knowing which direction you're facing, etc. This does, however, entail removing the computer from the base stand. This may seem like a concern due to battery life issues, however when hooked up, the computer consistently tanks 9+ hour sessions without dying. When asleep but still on, the battery can last for longer than a week not attached to the base station. These truly enable VR gameplay, and make the Omen X one of, if not the, best option for VR gameplay on the market right now. The only concern with it is that the backpack (and this is an issue that only
some users will have) sometimes runs into objects, but for me, this is because my Vive and
related gear is set up in a (relatively) cramped bedroom. Users with space any more than the
minimum listed on the Vive's setup shouldn't experience this issue.
Overall, the Omen X is a crazy computer, with the stats to prove it. The only two possible
complaints that I could see one having are A) The machine comes with one terabyte by default,
and as my library has expanded, even slightly, over the months that I've had it, I have found
myself needing to uninstall other games that I haven't played often. This isn't a major
inconvenience, however, because, as mentioned, I just uninstalled ones that I hadn't played for
a while or don't play often. Secondly, and this was not a major issue for me, when detached
from the base, the computer itself has only two USB connectors. The base has two USB
connections on it, making for four connectors total, but if you're looking to use more than two
ports while it's off the base, it seems like you're out of luck. All in all, this rig is a fantastic choice
for any gamer, casual or competitive (though obviously geared towards competitive).

The HP Omen X computer with backpack is not your ordinary computer system. For a start the main unit itself is not really a desktop computer or a laptop (it has no screen or keyboard) but something in-between. It is actually best to think of it as a laptop on steroids put inside a small desktop chassis.
First off, let us talk about what you actually get (and what is missing) from this bundle. When the package arrives you will get two main boxes. One for the computer and one for the backpack. Open them up and you will find the main computer itself, a docking station, a couple of cables for hooking up to a monitor, the backpack and four batteries. That is it. No keyboard, no mouse and more importantly, especially considering whom this bundle is targeted at, no Microsoft VR Mixed Reality headset (we'll get onto this in a minute). So out of the box you basically cannot use this system even as a computer unless you have either spare parts lying around or go buy them. I will forgive the monitor as those are usually not included in a computer bundle, but please at least supply a keyboard and mouse.
The main reason (I think) for HP not including basic essentials is that this system is actually targeted directly at the VR gamer. That being the case however, why is there no Mixed Reality headset bundled with it? HP do make their own, along with variations by Dell, Acer etc. So in order to get the full use out of this system, you need to spend another 200-400 on a mixed reality headset and controllers. So if you are interested in this bundle, keep that in mind.
The main computer itself is fairly stacked with an overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 with 8Gb GDDR5X memory, more than capable of handling the latest desktop games or a 4K monitor if you have one. An 7th generation Intel i7-7820HK processor with 4 cores and 8 threads, a 1Tb solid state drive (no secondary drive) and all your thunderbolt, USB3.1 and 3.0 ports and much more plus 16Gb or DDR4 memory (a 32Gb system is also available). One thing to note however is that none of these components are upgradable. This is a completely sealed system, and for a reason.
The reason being, as I've stated above, this system was specifically designed for VR. This is where the backpack comes in. Most VR systems leave a trail of wires and boundaries making it hard if not virtually impossible to move around with. With this Omen X system however, you can simply plug it into the backpack, plug your VR headset and controllers directly into the computer and off you go. No limiting boundaries. Now in order to keep yourself safe and stop you from knocking things over, you can setup a virtually boundary in your VR system. The backpack is well designed, comfortable to wear with hip and chest straps to take the weight off your shoulders and the computer is light enough that after a couple of minutes of being immersed in your VR world, you almost forget that you are actually walking around with a computer on your back. The computer, just like a laptop, has a built in battery which lasts for just over 1 hour and the backpack itself has two battery ports, one on each side, in which to put the supplied battery packs. These battery packs add another hour gaming time and the great thing about the design is that you can swap out the backpack batteries without having to power down your system (assuming you have a charge in the main computer itself).
I personally bought the Dell version of the Microsoft Mixed Reality headset and controllers although any brand will work with this system and it will also work flawlessly with other VR systems such as oculus however with Oculus and other types you will essentially negate the freedom and the usefulness of the backpack.
The system will work with SteamVR games as well as the usual Mixed Reality games like Minecraft although to be honest there isn't that much in the way of what I would consider good A class titles available at the moment. This is changing however as VR is becoming the next thing.
So overall this is an extremely competent system for VR gaming. The computer is very well equipped although not being able to upgrade it in any way does give it a slightly limited time life. It's also very well stacked if you don't want to play VR games and just want to edit photos or video or some other desktop activity that takes quite a bit of computing and graphics power (however in that case you may want to consider this system without the backpack). The backpack is a nice touch and takes VR gaming to essentially the next level however I have a feeling this bundle is really designed for a niche market at the moment.
My main complaints with the system are the incomprehensible decision not to include HP's Mixed Reality headset with it or any form of mouse or keyboard, rending the system unusable as it is out of the box. You will need to buy extras for this bundle, or ransack older computers you may own in order to use it. Also the lack of upgradeability makes me slightly hesitant as well.
A great computer and an excellent concept but let down slightly by one or two easily solvable problems.
