Product Description

DISCOVER YOUR PERFECT SOUND WITH THE AWARD WINNING NURAPHONE. The proud recipient of the Best of Innovation at the CES Innovation Awards for 2018 in the headphone category for most impressive technology. HOW IT WORKS The nuraphone plays a range of tones into the ear, and then measures a very faint sound that your ear generates in response to these tones called the Otoacoustic Emission (OAE). This tiny signal originates in the cochlea and vibrates the ear drum, turning it into a speaker and playing sound back out of your ear. This sound is about 10,000 times smaller than the sound that went in. Encoded in the returning sound wave is information about how well you heard the sound that went in. The nuraphone uses an extremely sensitive microphone to detect this returning sound wave, and a self learning engine built into the nuraphone to create your profile. This all happens automatically and in about 60 seconds. Once the nuraphone has created your hearing profile it sonically molds your music so that it matches your hearing system and delivers all the detail of the music you love. Once personalized you can listen to your favorite music in stunning detail on any device. WHAT DOES MY HEARING PROFILE MEAN? The nura app creates a unique hearing profile that represents how you hear. Your hearing profile has a color which helps you to quickly recognize it belongs to you. The shape of the profile contains all the information about your relative hearing sensitivity to different tones.

It's a, "You might this thing if you like this kind of thing" thing.

I have spent my entire 29 year professional career as an audio producer and engineer. I have owned more than a dozen different kinds of reference headphones and in-ear monitors. These are not the best. Not by a long shot. They aren't terrible, but they are not accurate. They're not even the kind I would listen to simply to enjoy music. Each ear cup contains two drivers: a mid/high driver that delivers sound through the earbud. The low frequencies are handled by a larger driver in the outer ear cup. I won't bother to describe the customization component of the app as it has been described in great detail all over the web and is the main reason someone would be interested in these in the first place. You may or not be impressed by it. The personalized profile will undoubtedly sound better than the generic profile of the test song provided. It sounds to me like the generic version might be deliberately "dumbed-down" in order to make the comparison more dramatic. It's the switch between the generic and customized profile that makes the people in the marketing videos open their eyes wide and smile. I'm a bit surprised that the audio engineers in the marketing videos were so easily impressed. A far better test is to simply listen to your current favorite headphones and then switch to the Nuraphones. I used the pair of Audio Technica ATH-M70X headphones that were sitting on the mixing console. I usually use Grado SR 325's for critical listening, but even the M70xs sounded better and more natural than the Nuraphones. The Nuraphones weren't bad at all. They're pretty good sounding headphones. One function that is touted in the literature is called "immersion". If you're a 17 year old kid with a souped up Subaru with a giant subwoofer, these might be right for you. They literally vibrate when the "Immersion" is turned up full. I don't get what some folks get from a ton of low end, but different strokes for different folks. But for any kind of critical work it would cause you to make terrible mix decisions. Worse than useless. With the Immersion setting set to "off" they seem to have a respectably flat response. I didn't feel the low end was lacking without engaging it, and I never thought it would sound better turned on even a little.

I don't mind the feel of in-ear monitors or ear buds, but if you don't like how those feel, you wouldn't like these. They don't fall out like off-the-shelf earbuds often do, but slight pressure on your ear canal opening is always there. It might become annoying over time.

The seem very well made, are solid without being too heavy, the packaging is beautiful and they aren't gaudy like Beats or other "HEY! LOOK AT MY EXPENSIVE HEADPHONES" headphones. They block out extraneous noise as well as most noise-canceling headphones, largely due to the earbud sealing up your ear canal. I didn't listen with anyone else in the room, and they turn off as soon as you take them off your hear, so I couldn't tell how much leakage they allow to the outside world. I just kept imagining they must be like the Subaru kid next to me at a stoplight.

Overall, I think they are a decent pair of headphones with a novelty hook. The measurement/ customization idea might morph in to something truly unique and useful in future generations, but for these, I think it's more of a gimmick than a really useful feature.

Packaging aside (it really is gorgeous!), I found I preferred a pair of headphones that cost half as much as the Nuraphones.

I bought them a week ago and returned them today.

Great sound. Great conversation piece.

I ordered these headphones because let's be honest, they have some pretty interesting features and abilities that you don't see in other headphones. Here's my breakdown:

Pros:

I think the silicone is super comfortable and the earcups don't bother my head where they go over my glasses which is a big plus for me.

I like how much noise they cancel without being "noise-canceling" headphones. I can be watching a different show in the same room as my roommate (who always has things way too loud) without turning my volume up--it's like he's not even there.

I like the look of these headphones; very simple and black and not overly large looking for being over-ear.

The battery life seems to be pretty good, although I haven't really been keeping track. I've only charged them once and I've owned them for about a month with regular use. You can see how much battery life is left when you connect them to your phone, but there isn't an indicator on the headphones. When they are dying, they will say, "battery low" in your ears.

I also really like the bass setting that these have. From what I understand, the outer cup is where the vibrations are generated (which you can adjust to your liking, so the sound doesn't have to feel super bassy like some are saying) giving you a very different experience than other headphones. I don't know how to describe it, but it's a very cool experience.

Cons:

Occasionally, I will find that they feel uncomfortable, but usually, a quick adjustment solves the problem. They're a little heavy which is the main problem for me since you can feel the weight on the top of your head. I haven't had any issues with the in-ear portion as some reviewers are stating they're uncomfortable. I guess it just depends on your ears, although the "earbuds" are quite squishy and seemingly adjustable.

The cost is the real issue for average buyers--these are expensive headphones (and I wouldn't classify them as a well-known brand) which is a big deterrent. They have some cool features/technology which was why I personally bought them, but I'm not an audiophile and I'm not made of money either, so this was a little bit of a bigger commitment than I was comfortable making, but once I tried them, I deemed them worthy of keeping.

Overall, I really like these headphones, and they're a conversation piece. I've always wanted some cool, good quality, Bluetooth headphones, and these seem to be just that.

Wow. A completely mind boggling experience.

I wanted a replacement for my ps4 platinum headset . I noticed, after using some $30 in-ear buds that produced better sound, that they just weren't providing me the punch i was looking for. Tried some Sennheiser's 550 pxc's and still was left wanting more. Then i decided to take a chance on a new, little known, revolutionary option. The Nuraphone. I was looking for an option loud enough where i would have to turn them down from the highest volume possible. Something that had bass comparable to the sound my subwoofers produce in my car. I didn't know if it was even possible at the $300-$400 range i was willing to pay. I'm glad to report to anyone who has been looking at YouTube videos or online reviews of these that they are indeed what we've been looking for.

First the pros. The sound. It's.... unexplainable. You just have to bite the bullet and hear them for yourselves. I'm rocking out to them as i type this. I haven't been able to put them down. It's crazy. I consider myself a music aficionado. Not an audiophile per se, but someone who likes to escape the daily grind with a wide variety of different tunes for different moods. Music does this for me. Anyway, i have thousands of songs available to me that I've heard over and over again over time. I skip a lot of stuff usually, depending on said mood. But no more. Everything i listen to either sounds better then I've ever heard it or its to the point where I'm hearing it in a different way. I'm hearing things i never have before. Example: 311 is my favourite band. I used to play drums. We would play the song 'Down' in my band (circa 95 when it came out) the way i thought it was produced. I must have heard that song a million times, trying to get the beat down. I was wrong this whole time. Little things like bass drum rhythms are so much more distinguishable now. It's bananas. Rediscovering songs is the name of the game with Nuraphone's on. I love it. I lay in bed with the lights off and just get lost. Every night. For hours.

I call these prescription headphones to everyone i show them to. I let them create a hearing profile (after a good mandatory ear cleaning) and just sit back and wait for their reaction. I then let them compare their profile to mine and my son's. It's pretty amazing to hear the difference in how differently we all hear things. Next level stuff, no doubt.

The Immersion mode is basically the mode i was looking for but was totally unprepared for. Full disclosure, most things I've listened to sounded a bit too drowned out by the bass at 'front row' level, but certain songs do work. I usually use immersion mode a couple levels before full blown front row. That being said, these things kick. And it's different then most in-ear headphones I've experienced in the past, that would seem to give that feeling of being at a concert. The sound isn't pumping straight into your ears. That's the mids and highs. The bass rumbles from inside the cans, separately, in through the back of your ears. Its brilliant. I get no ear fatigue this way. You can hear all the notes from the bass guitar and individual drums perfectly. Sound is top notch on these. Different then anything I've ever heard. Better than anything I've ever heard, no doubt. 'A Kiss from a Rose on the Grave' almost made me tear up. Almost..

The carrying case is top notch in every way. I keep the headphones in them, not just to protect my investment, but because its nice to take them out when I'm about to listen to more music or whatever. Screams quality. Passive noise cancellation is just as good as the active noise cancellation in the 550's. Just have to take them off to hear what's around you. They are well ventilated. My ears didn't sweat inside the cans. After hours of use the ear bud part would start to get moist but that's normal from what I've found when using in-ear headphones/ buds..

Now for the cons as nothing is perfect. They don't fold up. They are pretty heavy compared to those 550's, but those are some of the lightest you can get (for the quality). There's no volume control from the touch pads on the side as of yet. This could change with a firmware update eventually, which i have hope for. You must use your device for The time being. The touch pads themselves are very sensitive and will get touched by accident, no doubt about it. The Bluetooth connection, while very solid in every way, is limited to one device at a time. I have to turn off the Bluetooth on my phone in order for it to connect to my tv. Then i have to have my tv 'forget' the Bluetooth connection for the headphones before reconnecting back to my phone again. Its a little inconvenient but again, something that could and should be remedied eventually through an update. Hopefully.

There's no way to see the power level left on the headset without having to go to the app. Weird decision. They use their own proprietary connection to the headset so I can't use my phone cord. You can buy them though for 20 bucks from their site. Doesn't come with a regular headphone jack that would plug into your phone either. $20 for that. So its Bluetooth or bust right out of the box. But i guess that's the idea, right? I would have liked the option myself.

That's about it. I've heard people complain about some discomfort in the way the little in-ear stalks sit in your ear but i luckily haven't had that problem after using them for a good while now. I've heard that there's a sort of break in period for some. Its one of those things where you're just going to have to try them out for yourself and decide if they're what your wanting. They offer a 30 day money back trial but Amazon already kind of takes care of that with their return policy anyway. These are THE headphones I've always been waiting for but never knew existed until recently. Hope this helps some of you out there on the fence! I'll update this review through time as i get more 'hands on-y' with them.

Initially I was in love with these headphones. After owning for about 2 weeks. That quickly changed. The sounds is amazing especially the bass. What I didn't like was after about an hour of use they begin to hurt unbearably. I had to take them off for about the same time and then I'd prepare for the same thing again. Ontop of that, I began to experience them turning on and off on their own after a full charge. WHILE I was using them. That could be due to the previous owner though. Initially I thought they were brand new since it wasn't stated they were used or refurbished, plus I'm paying $400 for them. So you'd think they were new right? Upon opening the box I could tell they were used, Seals had been broken, and plastic coverings that came on them were removed. To add on to that, when I connected to them via Bluetooth, it already had sound profiles created a sure sign they had a previous owner. I'd suggest to anyone considering them, wait for Nura to create V2. They have great potential, but these won't do.

Gimmicky: PAINFUL to wear more then 15 minutes, Sound nothing special
by Obesessive Reader (1 out of 5 stars)
November 16, 2018

Very easy to set up. Impressive custom profiling process. For all the tech, I was expecting to have my mind blow by the sound. But alas, they sound no better than good headphones or earbuds.

The big issue for me is that the are painful to wear. The things that go into your ears after a couple minutes start to make your ear and jaw hurt. And with nothing special with the sound there is no point in trying to persevere thru the pain. So I will be returning these.

Also what is annoying is when you try to adjust your headphones on your head, you invariably will touch one of the side panels. This will activate some touch control. Since the touch control is a tap and not a slide, this creates all types of havoc when you try to adjust the fit. This is a bad design.

Finally, I was expecting some type of immersive or spatial sound out of these given the ear profiling. But these are just plain stereo headphone with in-your-head sound. I am anxiously awaiting the Creative SXFI Air headphones for hopes of a true out-of-your-head sound experience.

The best audio experience I have ever had.
by Caleb Allen (5 out of 5 stars)
April 5, 2018

The most profound audio experience I have ever had.

I've been listening to my favorite music through these and hearing them in a way I've never been able to. The setup process is pretty neat, and I think they intentionally flatten the "generic" profile but the personalized profile still makes a world of difference. It's as if every song I've listened to has been through cardboard tubes, and these headphones let me FEEL the music.

The sound profile is one thing, but what gives this incredible product the leg up is Immersion Mode. They've got some kind of bass driver that uses a haptic motor or something, but whatever it is is the closest I have felt to being in the front row at a LIVE concert; there is no other way to explain it. You know when you see a band live and you can FEEL the energy? You can feel the hits of the drums, the power of the bass. That's what this is.

A few nights ago, I was shuffling through my library and thought to listen to Madness by Muse, one of my favorite songs of all time. I was feeling FULL immersion. Volume 100%, Immersion Mode 100%, and it is a lot to handle. In casual listening it's almost painful how much it rocks your head, and for a while I wondered why they let it go that high.

The song started, and instantly I was stunned. The power of the bass, the energy that these headphones drive is absolutely incredible. I was almost paralized for the entirety of the song; it is an experience I did not know existed. I was wholly enveloped in the music like never before. What VR is for the eyes, Nuraphones is for the ears. It's as if Matthew Bellamy was singing into my ear, and the bass speaker was a few feet from my face. This was a better musical experience than when I saw Muse live.

After this experience, I took off the headphones and haven't listened to the song since. I actually legitimately considered returning the headphones because I don't believe that I will ever experience music the same way again. It was truly powerful.

I remembered that I was wearing my Fitbit which tracks my heart rate. I checked it out, and my heart rate had gone from ~80 bpm to 126 bpm, something definitely physically happened to me.

I have a few minor gripes, like the buttons are way too easy to accidentally hit, and I've disabled them. I also work for long hours at the computer and they are not as comfortable as my Bose QC 35s for all-day listening (let's be honest, nothing else is), just because after 3 or 4 hours the earbuds begin to irritate my ears, but that is the same for any earbuds. For the sound experience these offer, those don't matter a bit.

Don't do Nuraphones kids, stay in school.
**edit:** they just sent a software update that enabled active noise cancelling, AFTER I bought these months ago. I'm still getting new features! I love that they didn't advertise that, or promise features that weren't yet available, but chose to surprise those of us who already owned them. The value was definitely there before, this is just an added bonus and gives me more reason to love this company. "Social mode" is a newly added feature which allows audio to pass through and makes the headphones feel like they are open backed. Amazing for an office setting.
**December 2018 edit** I still love these headphones. I still use them consistently for all of my personal music listening sessions. I've put hundreds of hours of use into these. I still hear new things in songs I've listened to hundreds of times. My girlfriend tried them and later told me "You know I really do get the obsession with nuraphones now", and loved them so much that I bought her pair for Christmas.

After she got some time with them she texted me this (as a precursor, I listen to a lot of jazz and classical): "So I was listening to this song I like on the nuraphones and I understand now why you don't listen to lyrics because I was so immersed in the music and how great it sounds that it was impossible to concentrate on the lyrics".

Are these amazing for an audio engineer? Probably not. They give a personalized, opinionated balance that doesn't represent the artist's original mix. For a music lover looking for an amazing audio experience, I can highly, highly recommend these.

well, this is kind of interesting. I got an ad for these and was really intrigued. On reading numerous reviews both on amazon and elsewhere several things were common. One, they sound fantastic. Two, they are uncomfortable. Three....well....they just aren't better than some of the competition. So I figured with a 30 day return policy it was worth the shot.

So. Well made. Very solid. Case was terrific. Like others, i'm a little baffled why they don't include a headphone from lightning/android cord but i guess Aussies are good capitalists and they wanted to make $40 on them as an accessory. OK with that. Setup - self explanatory, but it ran a test on me initially and could never get a good seal, with or without glasses. Finally got it to run the diagnostic on my hearing. No problem with getting the earbuds in my ears and a decent seal. First time I ran it, well, I was completely unimpressed. Treble was distant. "immersion" mode was pretty much just like what we used to call "contour" or "loudness" control on amplifiers. A/B tested against my Bose QC 25 or 35's as well as my bose noise reducing ear buds QC 20i. Back to Amazon they go....BUt....let me try to run a new profile and see if that makes a difference. So I deleted the first one and ran another. This sounded terrific. Treble was much better. Go figure. But I listened to them nightly for a week and although they sounded great, they weren't as comfortable as my Bose and frankly, as good as they sounded, they were no better than the Bose, which were cheaper. And a couple nights I just frankly found them unwearable. The sound, while superb, was not OMFG i've never heard anything like this....in fact....i had a pair of Klipsch in ear buds a few years back which had treble which was OMFG....

Anyway, if you don't have a high end set of headphones, you should give these a try. If you have Bose QC35 or another equivalent set in the same price range give 'em a try anyway, but I didn't find them to be better than the Bose and didn't find them to be worth $400.

Premium, high-quality headphones that sound amazing!
by wgiles (5 out of 5 stars)
March 15, 2019

Amazing. I've never heard headphones quite the Nuraphones before.

First of all, the sound quality is phenomenal. The Nuraphone measures your hearing the first time you use them and then customizes the music for you. I wouldn't say I'm an audiophile, but I do love tech and I would say that these are head and shoulders above the other headphones I own.

The design is also pretty unique, but I think it works brilliantly. The Nuraphone are over-ear headphones, but they also have small in-ear parts that go into your ears. This means all the instruments are really clear and the bass is CRAZY.

Overall, the Nuraphones are premium, high-quality headphones that sound amazing!

Sounds great. "Immersion Mode" is noticeably different, fun to experiment with. Comfortable, soft ear pads. The ear buds aren't too weird. High quality materials. Automatically powers on when you put it on. Side buttons can be programmed to replay songs, pause, change modes. Very smart design and unique.

When I received them I was unable to get a good seal on the inner ear phones
by Roy Sikkink (1 out of 5 stars)

After reading all of the hype I was really excited about owning a pair of Nuraphones. When I received them I was unable to get a good seal on the inner ear phones. The app acknowledges this after a couple of tries and lets you continue anyways. The resulting sound profile was horrible and inexcusable for a $400 set of headphones. I found them to be unusable and I'm sending them back.
