Not just a reskin - A really fun rework of Catan!
by Peter Shuck (4 out of 5 stars)

My family and I are Catan veterans. I've played standard, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights. Honestly, I had just expected this game to be just "Game of Thrones themed Catan", that would have been easy for the game developers. However, the Brotherhood of the Watch Scenario was fresh, fun, and brought a whole new dynamic to the game. Honestly, I think it's an improvement over Cities and Knights, it's a new dynamic with players having to balance cooperation of defending the Wall with the competition of settling the Gift. The components are high quality, nothing seems cheap about the game. Not to mention there's an ACTUAL WALL. I'd give it 5 stars, but I have to knock it down to 4 just because there were a few misprints on the box itself and the building guides... Which is slightly irritating but nothing the FAQ and errata FFG published can't partial remedy. Makes me wonder though, with such great game mechanics why didn't they bother to check for typos in the materials?

So fun! A few little things need to be fixed, but it's a great update to the classic game.

The new game play is a really fun twist on classic Catan. It has some similarities to Cities and Knights, but in my opinion Game of Thrones is a better, faster game. It requires zero knowledge of the books or the show to play, but fans of the franchise will have a little better understanding of the context behind the gameplay. There a few little tweaks I'd like to see in future iterations, but overall it's an awesome game. It's definitely replaced regular Catan in our house.

Pros: The new board and pieces look amazing (you can use the board to play regular Catan too, which I love). Also, the full-size resource and development cards are a huge improvement over the smaller cards of regular Catan. The addition of character cards also adds a fun new angle, and there are many more strategies to win as a result.

Things to tweak: There's a typo on the cards each player uses to organize pieces (it says "Keep" twice, in two places, where one should say "Guard"). Not a dealbreaker, I hope they issue replacements or something. I also hope they add more character cards or change the rules around a few of them. We've played more than a dozen games, and several characters are just too low-value to ever use / some are a little too powerful and get snatched up a little too quickly. Also, the blue and the black pieces are just a little too close; it would help if the blue was lighter or some other color altogether. Last, if the Wall were clear plastic instead of grey, it would help all players be able to see the Wildlings adding up on the other side. None of these are major issues, though--just things that I hope get improved over time.

Final verdict: SO MUCH FUN! A must-have for any fan of Catan.

Not just a reskin

Game of Thrones Catan is an interesting game of working together with your opponents while at the same time trying to reach ten victory points to win the game.

The standard game of Catan consists of players choosing to build settlements next to areas designated for gathering resources like wood, sheep, grain, rock, and clay. What dictates a players ability to obtain these products is a dice roll as each location will have a designated number of 1-12 with 7 being dedicated to Tormund who would invade the land to still from players and blocking a location. Players gather more resources by negotiating with other players to trade resources for what they need to succeed as building more settlements lead to additional victory points, but also the building of roads to reach another locations. This is generally what standard Catan plays like, but Game of Thrones introduces a few extra issues for the players to defend against.

As players are spending time trying to build up their resources, the Wildlings are advancing on the wall. The wall is a 3-D sculpt that sits above the resource spaces and is manned by guards created by the players. The Wildlings will advance on the wall every time a player builds, or earns the longest road/most night-watches. They appear randomly as a tile is drawn that shows one of four clan symbols. The individuals that will come out of the far north would either be climbers, giants, or Wildlings. Each of these types can cause havoc to the players' game. If a climber reaches the wall they climb over and begin to take up the space of one of the resources. The giants will simply eliminate themselves to eliminate a guard on the wall. WIldlings will simply accumulate until the exceed the amount of guards on the wall to cause a breach to occur at the wall. Now, Wildlings and Giants can cause a breach which would kill a guard and have them cover resources for the amount of those that cross the wall. The game only allows three breaches to happen before the game immediately ends. If it would end immediately, the player with the most guards on the wall will win instead of reaching ten victory points.

Game of Thrones Catan really allows the theme of Game of Thrones to come through the gameplay. It also gives players alternate routes, or worries, to victory. It has wonderful components as miniatures are available for the Wildlings, a four part wall, a board that is easily put together, and a card insert to hold all of the resource cards and development cards. Catan is a good game, but the Game of Thrones theme helps add more to the game.

GREAT game very fun and pretty design I like how ...

Pros: GREAT game very fun and pretty design

I like how the original Catan game is printed on the opposite side of the board to teach new players.

Cons: The pieces were not made very well. The edges of some parts of the board and hex pieces started to tear off within the first few times we played the game.

You cannot add any expansion packs to this board given its shape so you can never play with more than 4 people at a time. I personally like the settlers and nights modification better.

So fun! Good price

In most stores I've seen this is in the $80 range so this was the cheapest I found. Even $80 would be a reasonable price once you see all the figures it comes with (so cute! And so many).

Great game if you are a fan of GOT and regular catan is getting too easy/repetitive. Has a nice twist that follows the show, taking place in The Gift (the northern region). You still compete against each other with a lot of the rules being the same as regular Catan, but you have the added element of fighting off wildlings almost like a team. How much teamwork you put in depends on the placement of your settlements, the hero's others have in play, and your personality. My family quickly discovered who the Jon Snow's and Cersei's were, lol!

Overall I would definitely recommend and can't wait to play again! ❤️

It seems to hold a lot of promise for a great game, but it is very confusing to start
by Jill Burns (4 out of 5 stars)

I just purchased this game, and we are veterans of Catan. It seems to hold a lot of promise for a great game, but it is very confusing to start. It would have been nice for the developers to explain several things. We sat in confusion for about 20 minutes trying to figure out what the Gift was (thank goodness I had read the books at one time), the 'clearing', what the gold round cutouts are (still don't know). A suggestion for the developers - have much larger pictures when explaining the strategy and movements. We, as Boomers, cannot see as well as we did 30 years ago. 😁. The wall should have been clear, so all players could see what was happening; the blue and the black game pieces are just a bit too close in color for my eyes - maybe choose a bright green? Then color blind people would be able to play well, too. And the wildlings blend right into the game board. I feel that maybe a dark brown would have been better. All in all, Once we hurdle our initial color issues and determine how to move the wildlings, it will be a really fun game.

Awesome version of an already great game
by Phidippidies (4 out of 5 stars)

Basic Overview:

All in all, I really liked this twist on Catan. With this version, you can either play the original Catan game, or you can play a Game of Thrones style of Catan that includes brand new features: not only do you have to fight against each other to make sure you're building enough settlements, but you also have to work somewhat together to defend against the white walkers who are trying to breach the wall. There's a lot more to worry about with new ways to win the game and the wall element, making this a fresh update to Catan that doesn't become overly complicated. The instructions give an awesome beginners' guide with suggestions on how to play the first time, what characters to use, where to put resources, etc. We had a first time Catan player try the game out and he picked it up immediately and ended up winning the game against two Catan veterans.

Outside of some box damage, all of the pieces looked really detailed, and we didn't find any damage on any of the game pieces themselves. It looked like someone took a lot of time making sure the internal pieces would live up to both Game of Thrones and to the style of Catan.

Shipping/Delivery:

Delivery is the only reason that I'm not giving this 5 stars - it arrived on time just fine, and the plastic sleeve the box came in was undamaged. However, upon unwrapping we saw that the box itself had a few edges that were decently damaged. Not necessarily a huge deal, but my sister (whom I bought this for) was upset, since she cares a lot about keeping things in excellent condition. We had considered returning for this reason, but ultimately we decided to just go ahead and ignore the damage, since it was the holidays and we wanted to play the game as a family while we were all together.

Box Contents:

The detail in the game pieces was super nice - it looks like someone actually took the time to create the 3D models and they did not disappoint. There are a few new pieces in this version:

The board of the game itself is double-sided: you can play either the Game of Thrones version of the game, or you can play the original Catan with GoT pieces.

The box also comes with tons of extra plastic bags so you can organize the pieces that you punch out however you like, which was very helpful.

Game Play: (assuming you already know basic Catan)

We did not play the standard game for this set, and only played the GoT version two times. I imagine this becomes MUCH more intense when you get a group playing more frequently and you end up having more white walkers enter the game. In the GoT version of the game:

Each player gets the same three standard pieces as normal Catan: A road, a settlement, and a keep. However, they also get a guard piece in addition. The guards sit on top of the wall and block white walkers from entering the map. Each player also gets a character card that they can use twice before taking a new character. Each character has a different ability, stealing resources, getting rid of walkers, etc.

There are also now pieces to represent white walkers - three different characters represented by light gray. Each white walker has its' own "powers" for what they can do and how destructive they are.

As you play the game, with every settlements or keep that you build, you'll generate one or two white walkers.

With the white walkers, there are new ways to win the game: if a certain number of white walkers breach the wall, the game ends, and the person with the most guards on the wall wins. This ends up adding a nice twist to the game:

You have to decide between building settlements and keeps for yourself, or you have to help the entire group try to stop the walkers.

Meh

We love Catan! We play every weekend. We have get together a and play the game. So when I saw this combo of catan and our a great show I thought it was a no brainer!

Well I don't like.... the kids do but we don't.
(My kids have no idea what game of thrones is).

The game name made me think it's going to be about the different houses represented in the show. Actually is only about the walls watch. No one else! Ok so if we are all about the walls watch where is John snow??? Bummer!

The game is pretty much the same only now your also going against the wildlings trying to enter the wall and take over your land. I thought it was cute when I first opened it, the plastic characters are nice touch. But once we played it I realized it was not for me. The game is perfect as it is, don't mess with perfect!

2 new mechanics
by The Wardens (5 out of 5 stars)
July 7, 2019

This is regular catan with 2 new additions. The first is the hero cards which allow players to use abilities and these are important. It's very similar to Star Trek Catan if you've played that. These abilities are powerful and if you neglect them you will probably lose (also if you get stuck with a bad card, although after the beginning you can choose). The second mechanic are the wildlings which basically act like additional robbers. They impact the spots closest to the wall first, but those spots have the best dice roll markers so you have to choose your starting locations carefully.

Should also mention you can play the base or regular catan with what's included here so if you are choosing between this and regular catan, know that this basically comes with regular catan included.
