Did not work for me

I needed Spanish translator only. The review is for Spanish only. This device is only working with very simple phrases. You also have to speak clearly and slowly for it to translate well. I tested it with a native speaker, and 8 out of 10 phrases it translated incorrectly. Day to day stuff - nothing complex. I also tried it live in one of the stores - people did not understand what i needed, it was translating something completely different.

We took this on a trip to Japan. Not very helpful. We did better without it. It doesn't understand a lot of things and was constantly mistranslating leading to a LOT of confusion. I would not recommend this to a friend and I will likely never use this item again. What a waste. I gave it two stars because it holds a charge for quite a long time. That is the only positive I have to say.

It's very light and the design looks great.

I bought it for an upcoming vacation to Shanghai but have been trying it at work with my Chinese colleagues. It was pretty mind blowing the amount of things I can say with ili. I know some basic Chinese phrases only, but now I am able to say a lot more. We tried many sentences that I might need to use and they are pretty much all covered.

I natively speak both English and Spanish, and to that extent I can verify that its Spanish translation is precise. It would be perfect tho, if the volume can be adjusted. But overall, it's a great purchase!

Best remedy for travel anxiety

I travel a lot for work and I ended up in too many situations where language was a barrier, especially in China and South America. Before ili, I used to either Google a phrase in English on the spot, and pray that I have fast enough reception or the translation I don't understand made sense or I start asking everyone around me if they know English - both very anxiety inducing situations. So I bought this thing after stumbling on a viral video about it.

It comes in a very Apple-esque packaging with;
- a User's Handbook that goes through the buttons and stuff,
- a Quick Start Guide to take you through your first translation,
- a 'Welcome to Japan' handbook that has some general cool stuff about Japan, with example phrases you can test with,
- the device itself, a wrist cord to hold it and it's charger. Nothing too surprising about any of it. I'd have liked to see a case of some sort or a pouch to carry the device in since it's $200, but not a big of deal as the material seems to be scratch resistant.

The device itself is super lightweight, as heavy as a small lighter. The button feedback is nice and it feels high quality. The light colors are distinct enough to tell what the product is doing. The volume is high enough for almost all situations you can get yourself into and given the device size the speaker is very impressive. It comes with charge right out the box, which is always great to see.

To use it is super simple and intuitive;
1. Press the button,
2. Say something in English,
3. Wait for it to translate (0.5-1.5 seconds),
4. Hear the translated sentence.

And that's it, just like that you just formed a comprehensible sentence in realtime in a language you don't know. It's really fun talking to someone with this device. The main gripe, as others mentioned, is that it's one-way, meaning it won't translate back in English from the other language. It's really a party trick and people are baffled the first time you use it. It's offline, easy to use, fast to translate. It does the job I need it to do, which is to help me communicate enough when I'm abroad. Would definitely recommend and it's exciting to see how they will improve over time with updates.

It helped out in a pinch at the airport with no WiFi, which alone I think made it worth the purchase because I didn't miss my flight, but once I got out in the real world. I was plagued by bad translations and def longer than advertised translation times. I also wish this had a case, if it's not hanging around your neck declaring you a tourist to scam. It just keeps getting turned on in your pocket and the battery will die quickly. Wouldn't mind a hold switch. Final gripe is that it's only one direction. Everyone I used it with expected to be able to use it back, which further complicated situations. I was sure to only use this thing for small, one sentence translations as advised by the company. After about a week. I just left the ili in my desk drawer and had much better luck with google translate. I'm sad about this review because I think this product had a ton of potential in offline translation. But it needs work. Final note... make it out of metal... the cheap white plastic can't even make it through one or two sessions in your pocket without becoming discolored.

Awesome Companion for Traveling

Bought it for a family trip to Japan this summer and it worked very well! It was so easy to use even my grandma had fun using it to order food at restaurants. It was handy and it translates super quickly. I think the locals also love it and were amazed when we used it with them.

We played this game where my husband would use his phone to translate besides me and I always beat him! Bringing the translator with us on the trip definitely made things easier. I'd say it's a great product!

One of my friends recommended this device for my next trip to Spain.

I tested with my friends from Mexico and it seems to work pretty well! Sometimes it doesn't translate certain words such as bad words, it can translate basic sentences.

It's really light and well designed and translates really fast, which I like the most. Can't wait to try it out in Colombia.

The ili translator was suggested by a co-worker whose son works in Japan. The set-up (which effectively consisted of charging the unit and connecting to a computer for an update) was a snap. Using the device is quite easy as well. The unit came with a nice book providing tips when traveling to Japan and various phrases to focus.

I have not yet traveled to Japan (the trip is forthcoming) but did test the Spanish translations. These are accurate and appropriate.

I'm looking forward to using this during our visit to Japan!

Sleek design, incredibly light weight, works offline! Great for people who travel for work, like myself, or those that are vacationing in a Spanish, Chinese, or Japanese speaking country.

This little translator helped me get from point a-b in South America and navigate Tokyo's INSANE metro system with ease! Only wish is that it could support French translation as well, as I travel there a lot. That said, you couldn't ask for a better travel companion for the price point. Highly recommend for those wishing to navigate another country with ease!

ili is an AWESOME translator! I bought one for my trip to Peru last week because I can only speak and understand very limited Spanish, and I wanted to use a translation tool that was faster and more convenient than Google Translate. Ili was so easy to use to ask for directions to nearby restaurants and shops, and also to direct taxi drivers to take me to destinations further away from my hotel. I also used ili to haggle with local vendors for souvenirs! Ili was able to translate my phrases VERY quickly--it felt like I was traveling with a mini local Peruvian translator. Overall, ili made my solo trip to Peru incredibly convenient. I am usually hesitant to take solo trips to countries where I can barely speak and understand the language, but ili gives me the confidence to take more trips to Spanish speaking countries. I'm also planning on going to Japan next year, and will definitely bring ili along. Would highly recommend! :)
