Fun truck, but Traxxas electronics issues make this an extremely regretful purchase
by Nick Overstreet (1 out of 5 stars)
September 24, 2018

I'm updating my review and lowering it from 4 stars to 1 stars due to Traxxas electronics issues. This truck has been an unending nightmare since the day I took it out of the box.

In the first 2 weeks of ownership my truck has had the steering servo die, the ESC fried itself, and finally the motor lost all forward drive, only reverse works. Traxxas support has told me it's a 2 week turn around time for new parts to ship to them and to ship back to me. So now my very expensive truck that I've owned for a couple weeks is going to be down, broken and unusable for at least 2 weeks. That's not even considering all of the disassembly and reassembly of these tiny parts I'm going to have to do myself. I find this situation highly unacceptable for such a high dollar hobby grade product. This was my first Traxxas purchase and after this experience will absolutely be my last. A new speed controller if I were buying myself is a $95 part, and a new upgraded steering servo (because the Traxxas ones are junk apparently) is $80, and a motor is $25. So that is $200 worth of parts my 2 week old Traxxas now requires to get running now, or I'm waiting WEEKS for Traxxas to get me new parts?! How is this acceptable?? Extremely disappointed, and returning it only refunded me half cost because it was used. OF COURSE IT WAS USED, THAT'S HOW THIS JUNK KEPT BREAKING. Avoid at all costs, DO NOT BUY TRAXXAS.

Amazingly versatile truck
by Matthieu P. Raillard (5 out of 5 stars)

This was my first foray back into RC in a few years; the last car I'd owned was a Traxxas T-Max nitro truck, and while that was a fun one, it was finicky to run. This TRX-4 Bronco is an amazing piece of kit, and is tremendously capable yet not intimidating. It is kind of a jack of all trades; you can use it for rock crawling, you can do trail running, and you can just bash around the backyard or let your dog chase it around if you want. There are two transmission settings, hi and lo, which you can select via the remote. You also have three differential settings that you can control remotely: unlocked, front locked, or front and rear locked. With the transmission set to low and the differentials locked, there is very little that can stop this beast- I've climbed up steep rock screes without difficulty. I've been running it for a couple of months, and have had no problems. I've run it with a 2S Lipo battery, and also a 4200 NimH, and honestly for this type of truck, the Lipos aren't really necessary (though it is slightly faster in high gearing, but marginally so). All in all, this is a terrific truck. It's not for you if you're looking for a super fast machine, but it's versatile enough that you can do just about anything else with it.

Tough enough for a 8 year old to thrash.

I wanted an RC truck that could go through the yard without dumping a battery in 8 minutes. After three rounds of burning out motors and steer servos in a Latrax and Slash, I bought this truck. It's been running great with near daily use in the yard by my son. He rolls it regularly and has figured out how to get it back on its wheels by cranking the steering to one side and mashing it in reverse.

He runs mostly in high gear, we hardly ever use the lockers, and I've removed the mirrors to try to save them. I'm pretty sure this RC is not going to nickel and dime me to death. Plus it looks pretty cool.

Problems to be aware of
by Patrick G (3 out of 5 stars)

Steering servo motor quit on 2nd charge. The Titan 550 drive motor quit on 5th charge. Running Traxxas 2s and 3s battery packs and for only about 20-30 min each run. Bottom line, I've owned it for four weeks and had to replace a servo and now have to replace the Titan 550 21t motor. Where's the quality control? Otherwise I love the truck.

Wobble and shake
by D. B. Martin (3 out of 5 stars)

Truck is awesome but deducting two stars for the extremely warped tires. Seems to be a common gripe on the blogs. Does affect the stability of the truck at full speed on a smooth surface as it makes it wobble and shake really bad, not so noticeable off-roading. You think for as much as this truck cost it would have better quality tires on it. And if you want to replace them you have to replace the rims as well cause the tires are permanently bonded to them. And you can't buy this style rim so kiss the authentic look goodbye if you do this. Disappointing.

Gives a lot for a moderate price

Only 4 stars because of no long-term durability testing/use. Other than that, it's really set to go out of the box. Does great in stock form. Traxxas really did the right thing with this ready to run rock crawler. The things that have been cited by other reviewers for being "weak points" are not bad at all for the casual user. The steering servo could be stronger, but is sufficient for out- the -box fun. It looks great and performs well. The instructions to get it up n running are rather quick n easy. It comes with basic tools to get you by with basic needs. The remote is just fine. If you want aftermarket/upgrades, you're going to find anything you want/need to go as crazy as you want. I've rocked this thing in stock form at an informal competition against heavily modded trucks and it did great. Once again, time is needed for durability issues. Not that I've encountered any as of yet.

Great Platform. Highly Capable. Lots of Fun!
by Brandon L. Turner (5 out of 5 stars)

I did a ton of research before buying and bought a stronger cheap steering servo and BEC before the truck even arrived in anticipation of breaking it. Even with the weak stock servo, this truck is worth buying because of all the great features.

I actually use the 2-speed transmission and locking differentials more than I thought I would. You can get totally different driving experiences. Of course... every time I go to high gear something bad happens. Which was most likely user error but this truck can really move on a 3S LiPo.

Very fun! My only other crawler experience is a highly modified Everest-10.
