This was a total waste of my very adult money... and I love it. Lol.

It's Dysen-terrific, but with a few quirks
by Michael A Brannon (4 out of 5 stars)

First of all, the item's very concept and design makes me happy. Not only is it a perfect emulation of the Apple IIe version of the Oregon Trail, but it's designed like a mini Apple IIe computer!

There are, naturally, some small hitches here.

First of all, the directional pad is awkward. Instead of a traditional D-Pad, it has an embedded NSWE compass with separate median buttons. It's not a big deal for most of the game, which is navigating menus: but during the hunting screens, it becomes a big liability. Especially if you have big thumbs like I do.

Second, there is, naturally, no keyboard. While there's only one section where you enter text, it's pretty tedious to have to use an alphabet screen. A small carp, but it's still annoying.

Finally, the screen is, naturally, tiny. Like the above gripe, I don't see how that could have been avoided, but it does make it a bit hard on the eyes.

Other than that, it's a perfect recreation of the (and what was for many of us, our first) Oregon Trail experience. If nothing else, it's a fitting tribute to this icon of edutainment. Definitely worth the buy.

Nostalgic!

This is awesome. I used to play this in 6th grade! My classmates used to race to get our work done so we would have time on the computer so we could play this. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the screen is very small. It may be hard for someone who can't see very well to use.

Other than that, it is great!

This brings me back to my childhood.

This is great. The way it looks like an old computer. The plastic does feel a little cheap and so do the button. However, the screen is really good and its in color. Batteries come with it which is nice.

My 10 year old grandson loves this game. He plays it over and over. He has successfully made it through the Oregon trail a few times but keeps playing. We love how educational it is and the great history based conversations we have because of it!

Target exclusive item- don't overpay- but probably worth a little extra for Prime service.

I love the game, but it is a Target exclusive item (the seller has edited the image to remove this info) and should be priced at $25. Nevertheless, I paid $30 and was able to get 2 day shipping here, so I'm not super-offended or anything. Beyond that, the game plays just like I remember it, but the proportions are a bit off and some images look a bit squished. The way the screen displays color can strain the eyes, and it's a small screen and hard to focus on after a while. Luckily, there is a save and continue feature, so you can give your eyes a break and don't have to travel the trail in one sitting. If you want what is probably the best version of the classic game you can get, this is it for now. It's hard not to imagine how easily this entire unit could function as a $5 app download on your phone, though.

It's a good throwback game and looks and feels just like the original. I've run into a couple minor glitches, but overall, the game is great. Solid piece of nostalgia.

Pros:

Same as original

Easy to play

Portable

Cons:

Very minor glitches on occasion

Hunting is HARD. Worth the cash anyway.

I was one of those kids that grew up in the 80's and 90's BOTH. I remember the feeling of walking into my 2nd grade classroom and seeing those old Apple computers in the corner, wishing I could play Oregon trail. My friend had one at his house too and we played that thing so much. All these years later, as a grown adult with kids, I can say with relief this game is still fun! My son and I really enjoyed playing it together. It's a great history tool for younger kids too. They packed all the fun of the old 80's computer game into this thing. The case has an authentic look. The power button is a floppy disk! I love it. If you liked Oregon Trail when you were younger or if you want a piece of nostalgia buy this. It's worth it. I will say that the hunting on this is super difficult. It's hard to maneuver and point. Don't let that discourage you, just be warned so you don't get frustrated. Still worth it.

Blast from the past!

I loved playing this game as a kid in the computer lab in my elementary school days - and this handheld does a great job of recreating the original game! Seems faithful to the original, styled after the DOS version of the game. This isn't an emulation, but rather a recreation, and a pretty accurate one at that. I got this for $10 on Amazon, can't beat that price, and it even came with batteries!
