My Coffee Science Experiment :)by IvanaYvonne (5 out of 5 stars)

My Hubs is a French Press kinda guy & I am a Pour Over kinda girl. A new cafe opened up downtown offering the syphon vacuum coffee at $9 a cup! $9 is too much for even we coffee snobs to try!
I came on Amazon & saw prices ranging from $39 to well over $200 per machine and chose this 'middle of the road' coffee maker which, bonus! had a warming plate.
So Fun! This takes me back to high school science class :) The 2 of us gathered round watching the water go up, up, up & then stirring in the grounds & watching the 60 second extraction.
The coffee is so clean! I did not know what that meant until I tasted it~an exceptional cup!
The instructions left us wondering how much water to how much coffee, but after some fun trial & error: 30 kg coffee to 400 kg water is our sweet spot
Note: So glad we didn't pay $9 a cup! At the rate we are consuming this, we would have had to get a second mortgage by now:)
It's a good coffee maker

First off, I had a Gourmia GCM3500 maker before this, but one of my kids broke the upper chamber while cleaning it and I couldn't find it for sale anywhere anymore, so I tried this one - NEWS FLASH, it's essentially the identical product! The base is slightly different, but operates the same, however the carafe, utensils, filter and upper bowl look exactly like the Gourmia maker and I'd guess come off the same factory line.
Having said that, it works very well and makes a great cup of coffee. Yes, a native English speaker could update the instructions, but they are clear enough to do the job. If you like a rich, clean cup of coffee, then this is your maker. The cup size is not standard at 167ml per cup, or 500ml for 3 cups; essentially, it makes 17 ounces of coffee at the 3 cup mark or just over 11 ounces on the 2 cup mark. It makes a nice large cup of coffee.
I use the 16:1 ratio of water to coffee, aka "the golden ratio", and find that it makes a very good cup of coffee, which my wife refers to as strong, but it's not bitter.
Simple instructions:
1. Put desired amount of water in the carafe.
2. Insert filter and desired amount of coffee in the upper chamber
3. Insert upper chamber into carafe and turn on base by touching the power button twice (this prevents turning on inadvertently, which you will likely do if you are wiping the unit down).
- optionally, place the cover on top. This is not necessary to make the coffee, but it does prevent any splash over or steam from getting on the counter.
4. When the water boils into the upper chamber, touch the SEL button and choose either manual or auto.
5. Wait for the vacuum to draw all the water down, with a little flourish at the end as the vacuum draws air at the end and creates a little bubbling in the carafe. (this is a bit of the cool part that makes it more of a science experiment).
The unit does include a stirring rod (photo attached), but in practical terms, there's a lot of boiling action going on and I don't find any taste difference whether I stir the coffee or not. If you add your coffee after the water starts boiling, maybe you need to stir it, but I think it's not really needed.
Personally, I like the 60 seconds and use Automatic, but my wife prefers a little weaker coffee and uses Manual for ~40 seconds. Either way, once the unit is shutoff and coffee is done, just dump out the grounds, rinse the glassware and filter out.
Lastly, I do not like the cloth filters as they a lot of work, IMHO. I use a Cory rod (google it) and it works wonderfully with only rinsing required, so clean up is simply. Another filter option is the Diguo Permanent Coffee Filter (on Amazon) that works fine as well. Knowing that my adult offspring will likely break my Cory rod, I don't let them use it, but go them the Diguo filter to use.
Nice product that unfortunately did not work for long!

Product came well packed and has a quite elegant and stylish European look to it once assembled. Product is made in China and as seems the norm for products from there the instructions are a bit vague. Basically to brew coffee you push the power button twice and it will start heating the water. Once the water starts to boil and it is all forced into the upper vessel you then have the option to press select once for manual control or twice for automatic. Doing that puts the heating unit in a lower power setting (to maintain a low boil/simmer) and starts a times. In Manual the timer simply starts counting up showing you the steep time and when it hits whatever duration you want you just press power again and it will shut off the heating unit, allowing the lower chamber to cool, reducing the pressure and drawing the coffee back into the lower chamber. In Automatic mode (which I did not use) it again puts the heating unit in a low power mode and after 60 seconds of seep time it will automatically shut off the heating element to draw the coffee back into the lower chamber.
This was my first vacuum coffee maker and I was really excited to try this out. After experimenting with seep times etc I finally settled on a system that made a really great cup of coffee and I was impressed with the system! Unfortunately though after about 1 week I noticed that when heating the water in the lower carafe (which has a heating plate built in) it started taking longer and longer to get to the boiling point. Then it got to the point where the maker would take so long to heat up that it would basically time out and shut down before the water is heated enough to boil. So I then started needing to run it for multiple heating cycles and when it did start to boil I could visibly see that only 1/2 of the heating plate in the lower carafe was boiling water and the other half appeared to not be working. It was still possible to get the water to boil, building pressure and forcing the water into the upper vessel using multiple heating cycles but unfortunately doing it that way it would end up boil violently. When that happens it would force large air bubbles into the upper vessel which would then blow boiling water and coffee grains out of the top of the upper vessel so you would not only make quite a mess but you would have to risk getting burned to shut off the machine! In a nutshell after about 8-10 days of using the machine one time a day it was no longer working properly and is being returned.

Instructions are very difficult to read so I highly recommend watching instructional videos prior to use but overall for the price it worked well. Doesn't take up too much counter space and a lot easier to put in a cupboard than a standard coffee pot. It has decent size pot for my spouse and myself, certainly will not replace anything the size of an air pot. The glass is definitely fragile and if you are as accident prone as I am I would also recommend the protection plans.
Works Great....Will it last?

This Klarstein Vacuum Coffee Maker is very convenient and produces a great cup of coffee. I have only used the Klarstein for a week or so and although I am very pleased with it's performance so far, I am somewhat concerned that the bond between the metallic bottom heating section and the glass may be a future point of failure. It is not normally an easy thing to maintain such a bond over the long term but for now, considering the great performance of the unit and it's remarkably low price I have to give the unit 5 stars.
I'll update over time with respect to durability.

Really neat coffee maker. This thing is very fun to use and so far it's been making some pretty good coffee. I like the digital controls because it makes it easier to use. It is a little annoying to clean out (most coffee makers are).
Very unique

Absolutely love this unique coffee maker! It looks like something out of a Harry Potter movie or a mad science lab. My kids love to watch the water twirl when i make my morning coffee and i like how easy it is to take apart and clean.

I bought this only a few months ago and really like it. At first. It's not the easiest coffee maker to use, even if you're familiar with siphon coffee brewing, but once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad. Unfortunately, after only a few months, mine has ceased operating. The buttons no longer respond, and instead the base starts to overheat. I'm guessing there's a short somewhere within the device. Today is the 19th of June and Amazon shows the product support window closed out on the 12th of June, so I guess I'm up the creek without a paddle. I'm left with a $54 coffee brewer that doesn't work and wishing I'd just bought a $20 French Press instead. The coffee it makes is some of the best tasting coffee I've ever had, but if the machine can't last more than a few months, I'm inclined to say it isn't worth it.
Caffeine!!!

This is not the coffee maker you want to use for your first cup of coffee in the morning. Making coffee with it is a bit more complex than a drip coffee maker and takes a little long. However, it makes a really good cup of coffee. Really more of an afternoon cup of coffee maker or to show off when guest are over. Coffee made with it seems to have a bit more of a caffeine kick than drip coffee.
Interesting coffee maker that makes average tasting coffee

First of all I was surprised at how small this unit is. It will make no more than two 8 oz cups of coffee at a time. The coffee comes out very HOT and you have to let it cool for while before you can drink it. I was expecting exceptional tasting coffee but its no better than my drip pot or pour-over coffee maker. It is fun to watch it brew but thats about it.
After two months of use I've updated my rating from 3 to 4 stars. This little coffee pot has worked well for us and after experimenting with the amount of coffee grounds we now get a very good tasting cup of coffee.
