Won't connect to the phone -- overpriced thermometerby Beth (1 out of 5 stars)

This is an expensive product that does not do what it intends. For me, it acts like a basic thermometer but costs $80.
First of all, it will not connect to my iPhone 5. There is no manual with the product, only a manual on the app. I followed the directions to get connected, even went as far as taking out the batteries and doing the reset as they suggest. I got it finally paired with my phone, but when I wanted to use it? It would not connect. I did the whole battery/reset process -- nothing. So so aggravating!!!!!
When I finally used it without the app, it just acts like a simple probe thermometer, only the set temperature would not change. I cooked something to 150, but the thermometer wouldn't go past 125. So it beeped every degree above 125. Annoying!!!!!
Third, the stand is useless. In the image it shows that the stand hold the thermometer upright. On mine, the stand does not hold, it is flat either up or down. It doesn't hold, like the stand "joint" is not stiff or something.
I am not a novice cook and I use thermometers every single time I cook. So I am not inexperienced. I use Bluetooth all the time and have many many apps, so this is not my first experience with connections and apps either. I thought it would be fun to have a Bluetooth thermometer and carry around my phone to see how my food is. What I got was a thermometer that I could have purchased for $20.
I have used it so I can no longer return it, which is unfortunate.
So far so good....

I have some picky eaters, so I have to grill for the full range of doneness. I have those who want their meat practically mooing, and one who wants it well done, no red at all. So, thats a bit of a challenge that I usually fail at miserably. Hence the decision to invest in a good digital thermometer. Sadly, I have yet to find a digital thermometer that will last beyond a year. I was going to buy a Thermapen (heard great things about the quality) to get fast, accurate temperature measurements at the grills ( I have a Magic Chef & a Big Green Egg), but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that my biggest problem when I grill is being distracted, usually by guests, and then overcooking the meat. So thats when I realized that the iGrill might be the better purchase because it can alert me on my iPhone which is usually on my belt to let me know when its time to turn the meat or take it off the grill. I also smoke meats, so the range alert feature would be useful to let me know when my fire has died down.
I have only used the iGrill once, but I am so far impressed. It works as advertised and the steaks were perfect. The bluetooth signal is strong enough to pick up just about anywhere in the house or backyard. And if you do lose the signal, it picks right back up when you come back in range. The preset temperature feature is nice too. If it keeps working this well, I will have some much happier campers when I cook. Some reviewers say the unit is flimsy, but I don't see that. I do recommend the black over the white however. The only issues I have noticed is:
1) The iPhone reports a low iGrill battery level - one red bar. But I have checked the batteries and they are fine. I have sent an email to iGrill service, but nothing yet.
2) Despite a miriad of alert tones you can pick on the iPhone, the temperature alerts just vibrate and show an on-screen notice. Thats fine in a quiet environment, but I don't think it will be enough to jar me from my conversations with guests and get me over to the grill, so I'm going to have to figure this one out. I'm assuming for now its user error.
Update:9/2/2013 - Three complaints after having used this device for more than a year:
1. The batteries drain quickly. They should have designed it for a rechargeable battery.
2. The bluetooth distance is really bad. The app frequently loses the connection. Going out side to the grill restores it, but that defeats the purpose.
3. The probe suddenly started reading 165 degrees, even when resting outside the grill. Its hot in Arizona, but not that hot! The batteries read fine. I reset the unit by removing the batteries but no luck.
Excellent device

This device works very well. I was able to sync it with my iPad with no issues. I was concerned about the range, since my grill is obviously outside my house, however, I had no issues. The thermometer was able to connect through blue tooth to my devices and held a solid connection. The ambient air temp probe was very helpful as well, allowing me to set a range to alert me if the smoker was getting too hot or too cold.
I really wanted to love the iGrill

I really wanted to love the iGrill. I loved the concept. I hate the implementation.
iGrill worked almost properly the first time and I enjoyed it. The bluetooth range was nowhere near what was promised and I had to re-establish the link a few times, but it basically did what it was supposed to do.
Every time I used it after the first it got worse and worse. More dropped connections. The range was shorter and shorter even with fresh batteries. It got to the point that it no longer worked with my iPhone and only worked in "base" mode.
Now it doesn't even do that. I just threw it away and will look at buying a reliable thermometer with a reliable remote with a workable range even if it isn't my iPhone.
It's too bad. I really really wanted to love the iGrill.

Oh man ! Where to begin. This thing is awesome . Use it all the time with my smoker and it helps out so much . With the built in timer and meat temp quide it makes for a professional quality smoke every time. I have not found anything I have not loved about this yet .
Great idea, works well, although cheap implementation

I was an early adopter of the iGrill. Love the concept, and the ipad app (Pro version) really is useful. With this device, I can monitor two pieces of meat at the same time using the same application. I am mostly using this for my smoker, and for the longer cook times in the smoker, I am able to monitor the temperature curve of the meat to get an extremely accurate assessment of when the meat will be up to temp. (usually it is hard to judge whether that 8 lb brisket will be ready by the time your guests arrive).
FYI, it can only connect to one device at a time (e.g. you can't have it sending data to both your ipad and your iphone), which someone has asked.
My biggest/ significant complaint is that the plastic of the housing is quite brittle. The first device I received had the screws for the back stripped out and you could hear the plastic piece rattling around inside the housing. IDevices was great and replaced the device. The second didn't suffer the problem, but it is pretty clear that this could suffer a similar fate because of the type/molding of the plastic.
Two other nits: 1) The 'stand' is really useless. There is not enough friction in the stand's hinge to actually keep it from opening all the way or closing shut. Poor design. Not a huge issue, I just lay it flat, and I am always looking at the ipad anyway. 2) The 'touch' buttons on the front are really mediocre. I guess they work, but there is no tactile feedback that the button press registers. This becomes apparent when powering the device on -- it takes a few seconds to before anything visible happens, and I find myself pushing, pushing, pushing the button without realizing that I am power cycling the device over and over again.
Performs as advertised

It's accurate.
It's easy to set up.
Easy to use.
App design (for the iPhone) is very clean and very simple.
Have used it mainly for poultry and it saved the day on Thanksgiving when I found the turkey cooking too quickly and needed to make on-the-fly adjustments to the smoker temperature.
The only con is that it's pretty expensive compared to an "old fashioned" meat thermometer and the plastic stand on the back is pretty flimsy. The process of "standing it up" on the grill is not a confidence-inspiring experience. Of course, if you are using the app to tell you the temperature (which I do) then it doesn't matter if its standing correctly as you're getting your temp reading from your phone and you won't be concerned with the viewing angle of the base unit.
Perfect gift for a Chef friend...

... loving gadgets is required, this is not for everyone.
Like myself my friend is a chef and loves technology. With it you can cook a large piece of meat or poultry in the oven or grill and literally forget about it: you can watch football on the TV room and have the iPhone/iPad loaded with the iGrill App to monitor the food from distance... it actually tells you the meat will be done in 5 minutes, which is awesome.
There are some connection problems, I have to admit these could be 50% the iOS blame, but they are easily fixed by resetting the unit *removing batteries) and the iPhone/iPad Bluetooth device list.
This iGrill comes with two probes, something to remember when buying the new mini iGrill... which is cheaper but only has one probe connector.
Bluetooth doesn't work, otherwise a great idea

This product is a great idea. I purchased it with the additional ambient probe, to use with a dehydrator (making yogurt needs constant temp for 5-6 hours), to use with my kettle grill, and to use with oven cooking. I didn't think the product was too flimsy or delicate, like some other reviews wrote.
The iGrill is very sensitive to voltage. Customer support said that more than 0.2V variance will keep bluetooth from working. I couldn't use with rechargeable batteries. It worked with new batteries only... until I put the iGrill outside (grilling steak in winter), and it lost connection after 10 minutes.
The frustrating part is re-pairing it with the iPad. I must have spent way more time doing that than actually grilling. After it loses the connection, you're supposed to "forget device" in ipad, reboot both devices, re-pair, and try again. The iGrill would just blink a few times and then emit a continuous high pitched sound that I couldn't turn off. Reminiscent of the blue screen of death. I was willing to let the bluetooth go and just keep an eye on the displayed temperature, but I couldn't. The display cycles through all probe temperatures and alarm temperatures, and it was frustrating. I just wanted to see the temp of the one probe I plugged in.
I ended up returning this product to Amazon and buying a Maverick non-bluetooth still-remote thermometer, hope it works better. The iGrill is a brilliant idea, and I would love it if it worked - my inner geek loves graphs. But the bluetooth connectivity and battery requirements were a no-go.

Very buggy at times, flashes the Bluetooth and the probe 2 symbol. Have to remove the batteries to reset it about every other time I use it. The probes aren't meant to last, I've been through 2 ambient probes and 3 temperature probes in less than a year. They wouldn't honor the warranty and the probes are $30 bucks a pop!
