Just an awesome desktop with unparalleled 4500x3000 touch screen.

Little more can be said given on the hype surrounding this machine already, so all I can add is the observation that hype is true and a few more details. First, I use it as my TRAVELING computer. Now, you can question of the wisdom of putting a $5K computer in checked baggage, even having built a custom wood protective plate for the screen, and all I can say in my defense is it works. I have even taken this machine to China. I don't put fragile stickers on the rather nondescript suitcase I use for this machine, as it too clearly advertises value, so this Surface Studio 2 has to withstand full-on airline baggage mistreatment. I did buy the downtown warranty against breakage for $400. While it is NOWHERE in the specs, you can plug this machine into 220V with no problem. The spring-loaded stand is a little tricky and it doesn't fold perfectly flat to back, so I had to build a little wood support for that too. To hold this folded in the suitcase, and the wood protector against the screen, I just use a luggage strap. About 25 pounds all in. The Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that come with the Studio 2 are great, and light. The wifi seems to jump on any network easily. The camera and facial recognition software work well. It has four USB 3.0 ports, one of them being labeled "power" but not enough power to give you phone fast charging. I haven't been able to make this machine recognize my Note 9 yet as an external drive. The adjustable screen hinge is a miracle of design. And the ability to have TOUCH screen 4500x3000 display (192ppi) is like working on a photograph.

Most popular computer in Studio. A real DIGITIZER unlike any Apple computer
by Grant (5 out of 5 stars)
December 11, 2018

This computer is expensive. But so are Apple computers. This one has features that NO Apple computer has, namely a DIGITIZER that is built into this HUGE high definition color screen... a screen that can TILT down to a very comfortable drawing angle. The screen is also "touch screen" which lets you pinch zoom, rotate, etc., but that's low and old tech. What is fantastic about this machine is the DIGITIZER which lets you draw at fantastically high resolutions right into drawing software programs like Affinity Designer for vector graphics, or Affinity Photo for photos and raster imaging. Then these programs let you EXPORT into PSD type formats which are readable by powerhouse programs like MAYA where you can make 3D environments using the assets you draw in Affinity. You can then animate. Make CGI. You can then load it into UNITY and make GAMES and then sell games or make them downloadable.

ALL WITH THIS ONE MACHINE. Its a One Stop Shop tech powerhouse, and it works really really well.

We have brand new iMacs loaded with ram and fast hard drives. Same with MacBook Pro laptops with powerful SSD drives and super fast graphics chips. We use them for movies. But they can NOT digitize into art programs right on the monitor. You would have to use a separate pad, USB cable, and draw on it while looking up at a monitor.

Believe me, the Surface STUDIO machine is way way better, to see the ink or paint flow directly from your pen tip into the software as you actually DRAW on the screen directly getting instant results. Future is here.

Review from a Real IT Guy
by Just Another IT Guy (4 out of 5 stars)

Quickly.. My wife is a professional photographer that is *VERY* demanding of her computers because she has extremely high standards for her product. She doesn't want to have to think about technology (that is why she has me.. as she will tell you). We have been through using Wacom and an iPad (using Astro) to get her the feeling of doing art on a computer. She hated both of them.

So, I suggested the Studio line for her. It was not initially an easy transition for her. We had issues with Lightroom and Photoshop that she had not seen on the Mac. These problems prevented the smooth interaction with that the Studio provides while drawing and editing.

Short and long of it... After months of working with Adobe/Microsoft... It was an Adobe issue which they have fixed.

Now she absolutely LOVES her Studio. She has the laptop and the Pro and I don't think she'll ever go back.

If you have a need to interact with your machine by drawing, I don't know that there is a better product on the market.

FYI.. We did speak with Apple about all their issues, but they didn't seem to care like the Microsoft Store did.

Horrible for video editing and motion graphics
by Robbie Kujath (1 out of 5 stars)
August 13, 2019

I did a lot of research before I bought this and only saw positive reviews. I'm a motion graphic designer and video editor and kept hearing how this was a great computer for creatives. It might be an okay computer for illustrators, but DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU NEED TO EDIT VIDEOS OR CREATE MOTION GRAPHICS. It is soooooo slow and takes forever to render.

A project that would normally take me 3 hours on my 2015 MacBook ended up taking 7 hours because of how slow the computer was to preview/render everything. I will never go back to a PC again. I'm returning this computer and opting to just buy another Mac.

Unbelievable

This is the most awesome computer I have ever owned. I keep my previous Dell All-in-One as a backup but after looking at the screen of this Microsoft Surface, the Dell looks dark and muddy - I can't even look at it anymore. The monitor resolution is absolutely brilliant! And the screen is huge but super wafer thin. Spending almost 5K is a pretty hefty price tag but it's worth every penny - trust me - you won't be disappointed. I've owned and built desktop computers for as long as I can remember and I've never seen anything like this. I've seen state-of-the-art Apple computers and they don't even come close. What else can I say? It's just astounding!

Nearly Perfect
by Stever (4 out of 5 stars)

I've had my Surface Studio 2 for a little over 7 months now and I am pretty happy with it. It is a beautiful system and I don't regret my purchase. Be aware that Microsoft has made certain sacrifices on the construction of this system. The biggest is that they have put all of the components in a very small enclosure. Because of this, the components are basically similar to laptop components. In other words, don't expect the same performance as high-end desktops. I always get a little nervous when running games or applications that are computationally heavy for long stretches of time. The system will get very hot in these cases. In some cases I have experienced thermal throttling. This isn't an issue for 2d art/illustration applications. (Which is the system's real strength.) I'm a little disappointed with the N-Trig technology that Microsoft uses for the stylus. You pretty much have to use some type of software stabilization to compensate for its poor design--you will get jitter otherwise. Microsoft either needs to improve this technology or ditch it. The digitizer on my iPad Pro is much better and I didn't pay nearly as much for the iPad as I did the Surface Studio 2!

Screen is huge.

Love the look...the facial recognition and pin features stopped working for some reason and I've only had it for 2 days...maybe a software issue. But the facial recognition feature is awesome and excellent for privacy. Screen feels huge and I have to push it far away from me to take the whole screen while working.
