Solid for NES, GB, GBC...small warning about the mini SD Slotby Matt S. (4 out of 5 stars)

There are any number of Famiclone systems out there. We know how they are. They come with this annoying music, horribly translated titles, some rom hacks, and maybe 100 games if you're lucky.
This is a bit of a different take. Still limited to only playing NES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color games. But you just load the roms onto a mini SD card (4 gigs will be more than enough space if you have a smaller one kicking around somewhere) and the system will play them on the built-in emulators.
I play tested several games on all three of the emulators and most of it was pretty solid.
The two knocks I have against the system is the mini SD slot. Once you put your mini SD card in, it will NOT want to come back out. There's really no way to reach in and eject it. I had to unscrew the back screw to loosen it to get a pen in there to help it eject. My advice is load up all the games (easy enough to do) first, put it in, and that is the mini SD card's new home.
The other is the not-at-all intuitive way of adjusting the volume and screen brightness. So I'll likely be keeping the manual for a while longer until I memorize it.
I'd gladly pay another $10-15 for SNES and GBA emulation on a device like this. As these consoles improve, I hope they phase out the AV out cables and instead opt for an HD cable for TV.
Overall this is a solid purchase if you're sick of playing vintage games on your computer or phone and you're looking for a more authentic Game Boy experience.
I attached a picture of my 2DS, BittBoy, and New 3DS XL. The Bittboy is by far the smallest. The thickness is probably about the same as the lower end of the 2DS.
The coolest portable retro game player I've seen.

I love this thing!! Mind you, you'll need to load the games with your own ROMs on a mini SD card which is not included, but once you do it's so cool. The screen looks amazing. The sound is great. I've only tested a few of my favorite NES and game boy games but they run great. The screen is a little larger than the 1st generation gameboy, but of course has a resolution like an iPhone screen or something. Clear sharp color. I only wish I knew about it before Christmas so I could buy it for a couple friends. Other cool features: a built in rechargeable battery is included as well as a usb charging cable and AV out so you can connect via RCA jacks to any TV that has those type of Inputs. My only wish would be for a way to connect a full size controller for when you connect it to a TV... because the buttons are a little cramped compared to the NES controller.. smaller even than the original gameboy. Still that's a minor thing. I love this thing!!!
Great little emulation machine

The New Bittboy has a few negatives, but I would class it as a five star emulation machine for the money. NES emulation is great. GB and GBC emu feels a little "floaty" because of screen rendering - but I tried a game on the original hardware side by side and there was no lag difference. I stopped noticing this pretty quickly - it's kind of like the ghost trails left behind on the OG gameboy. The screen is phenomenal, the buttons are a bit noisy but feel great. I have some issues with controllers on the smaller side, but this is big enough that I haven't had any cramping, even on marathon sessions. The GB/GBC sound emu is a bit lacking - which is typically the case with those emulators anyhow.
The battery would be a negative for me, but it's removable and replaceable! It's the same battery as a Gameboy Advance SP. I snagged an aftermarket SP battery with a higher capacity (the BittBoy's battery is 700 may, you can find 850 mah batteries on Amazon) and it kicked up the battery life a bit. Having a spare also means being able to swap batteries on the go. The batteries charge fast, and you can play it while you are charging.
To load roms, they need to be unzipped and placed in the root of the SD card, i.e. not in a folder.
This thing actually fits into a jeans pocket, and is my new go-to bus commute distraction. My unit has an issue with the SD card slot being a bit tight, but removing the top two screws from the back allows the card to be removed freely. The TV out doesn't look particularly great on a HDTV (and I wish it was HDMI instead of composite), but I don't see myself using this machine for that purpose anyhow.
I'll update my review if there are any changes, but after a week I am exceptionally happy with this.
Excellent Little Retro Handheld!

I've had the new BittBoy for a few days now and so far I absolutely love it! The screen is a high quality IPS screen that you typically don't see in these clone systems. It's very bright and vivid which makes playing the older gameboy and gameboy color games great as the original systems didn't have a backlit screen back then. Battery is rechargeable and lasts around 3 hours or so. Loading ROMs on it was a breeze! Just format a micro sd card to fat32 and toss all your NES, GB, and GBC roms onto it and when you put the card into the BittBoy it automatically detects them and organizes them. Compatibility is great and I only ran into issues with a few NES games like Battletoads that had graphical glitches. This will likely be sorted out in a future firmware update for the system. It supports savestates so you can save/load any game at any time. Last I also love the fact that it comes with an AV cable so that you can hook the system up to your TV and play it on the big screen. I tried it on my 55in TV and it looked great! Overall I highly recommend the new BittBoy to anyone who collects retro games that is looking for a more modern portable way to play them and also anyone who just wants to relive the classics.
Emulation struggles

Great hardware with increasingly buggy UI that renders the product almost unusable to me. I was quite excited for this product, but even when a ROM loads up perfectly, I'll often face crashes and freeze (typically when saving) that result in losing progress and really acting as discouragement to play it.
I hate leaving a 1 star review as it feels overtly harsh, especially when the product DOES have some really redeeming qualities (brilliant display, pleasant form factor, acceptable price point). However, the underlying basis of the product is emulation, and when it struggles to do that at its simplest form, I really can't recommend anyone make the investment.
It is worth noting I see no indication I received a defective unit. If that were the case I'd be more than understanding, however the issues I experience are purely software.
A very capable backlit handheld

The Bittboy V2 is a wonderful little device that plays NES games and improves upon the first version by adding additional support for Gameboy and Gameboy Color games through a Micro SD card slot, true save states (3 per game), and digital brightness and volume controls. It has a nice speaker that is clear and crisp.
The form factor is small and attractive, incredibly portable yet still retains enough real estate for playability. It has a handsome shell that perfectly mimics the DMG Gameboy with a nice grippy texture. Controls are responsive with an oversized (although a bit creaky) D Pad, and Turbo buttons are welcome. I really would've preferred to see the A and B buttons rotated 45 degrees to more mimic the traditional set up we are used to, but it's not a deal breaker.
What instantly makes this handheld a winner is this GORGEOUS screen: wonderful color depth, adjustable brightness that doesn't wash out in sunlight, incredible viewing angles, and a decent enough refresh rate to keep up with the on screen action without tearing or blurring. It's truly a sight to behold and makes the Bittboy irresistible to pick up and play!
Emulation is it's only downfall, it runs original Gameboy games nearly flawlessly, I have yet to find any issues with any GB game I tried, it's wonderful. Most NES games and Gameboy Color games work well enough, with some having poor/garbled or missing sound emulation. A few games I tried like Shantae for GBC and Tecmo Super Bowl for NES are unplayable, which is unfortunate. But the vast majority of games run just fine, which brings me to my final point.
If you are in the market for a Gameboy DMG, Gameboy Pocket, or even a Gameboy Color, you absolutely MUST first consider the Bittboy as a compelling option. A backlit GB or GB Pocket plus a few of your favorite cartridges will easy double and possibly triple the price of this Bittboy, which currently comes in at $39. The exceptional screen, the available save states, and ability to load any game you want in an ultra compact form makes the Bittboy an excellent value packed purchase.
Great Portable Emulator; Small

This will play NES, GB and GBC well with little tearing. The screen is really bright and the speaker is loud, to adjust the volume you hold select down and then adjust with A and B; to adjust screen brightness you hold select and press TA and TB. I took off one star cause mine came with a little bit of screen damage.
Quality is very poor.

My first problem I have with the bit boy 2 are the buttons. The buttons are some of the wort stiff and cheap feeling buttons I have used. The first bit boy 2 I received had a broken power button. The second one I got has dust under the screen and has multiple dead pixels. The screen overall looks good and bright. That said there are no built in dials to turn down the brightness or the sound. Adding to the cost is having to buy a SD card and you have what feels like a cheap device with no built in games. I have a bit boy model 1 and knew what I was buying before hand. The quality control is horrible and the cost is too high.
Issues and Dirty Screen

Overall I like the Bittboy 2. It could be better but is still a bargain for $40. The unit I received appeared to be new but had a dust on inside of screen that was very noticeable. Also, only a 32gb Samsung EVO U1 micro s card worked for me. I could not get any other brands or sizes to work. All of the games for .gb, .gbc, and .nes added up to just
less than 1gb of storage. Even with possible future updates you should be able to use a 2 or 4gb micro sd. The unit would start with the "MIY pocket" start screen with two yellow eyballs and a gamepad graphic "X" but won't go further unless it recognizes a micro sd card that it likes. Once it does it will automatically go to the emulator screen for each separate system - NES, GB and GBC. I will try some different cards in the future so I can reclaim my 32gb Samsung card.
If you think your unit is broke because it won't get past the "boot" screen than you have to try different micro sd cards. Some have had trouble with the micro sd card getting stuck in the slot. For me it happened one time and as soon as I loosened one the top screws on the back than the chip popped out. It appears the chip is getting stuck under the edge of the plastic case. Easily fixed but still another quality issue.
I attempted to clean my screen but it appears by doing so I made more of a mess with light scratches. When the screen is on and displaying you cannot see the scratches but still it is a bummer. I will update this review later...
Screen problems

Okay. So I had issues with this thing out of the box- getting the SD card in the slot was difficult, and getting it back out nearly impossible. Now that I have games on where I'm sure it won't be something I deal with often. But the screen had a dark corner- which I was going to return the device for as it was defective. Upon opening the device and playing with the connector for the screen, the issue was solved. For $40 this thing is great, but keep in mind it's cheap and you may need to fiddle with it to get it working. Might bump up to 4 stars if I continue to enjoy mine, but the headache out of the box makes me want to leave it at 3 for now.
