Best iPad I've owned
by Elvin (5 out of 5 stars)
April 6, 2019

This is so far the best and most advanced iPad that I have ever owned. As a brief history I have owned the iPad mini 3 and the iPad 5th generation. The new A12 chip makes this iPad so fast and fluid and is honestly more power than I will ever need in my day to day use of this product. I love that this iPad has a fully laminated display it makes reading on it so much better and of course it eliminates that annoying air gap that is on the budget iPad 5th and 6th gen. Another of the great features of this iPad is the True Tone display that adjusts the display to the lighting conditions of the room your in. This makes it much easier on your eyes when your using the iPad and it's effects are in my opinion most notable when reading. The battery life on this iPad is excellent and the A12 chip is to thank for that since it's very efficient, with how much I use it I can go for days on a single charge though of course your mileage will vary based on use and other settings. The mini definitely falls into an odd market as it has the same specs as the new iPad Air just in a much smaller form factor, so I'd definitely recommend the mini if you've got an older iPad and want to upgrade without breaking the bank and don't mind the smaller form factor or even prefer your iPads in a more portable form. Also if your looking to buy an iPad for the first time and you want one that isn't exactly a budget model but at the same time you don't want to spend the kind of money it takes to get a pro model then the mini 5 might just be for you. I'm in the camp of people that prefer this smaller form as it's easier to port around and if you read books on it it's not going to tire your arm out like the larger models. The mini definitely has a viable market even in 2019 and I believe is worth a look if your curious about how an iPad of this size compares to the much larger versions that Apple sells.

It's the latest iPad mini, what's not to love?

Perfect, exactly what I was waiting for. I was (am) an owner of the original gen1 iPad Mini, which I loved. However, it has become too slow for most use cases and is 2 iOS revs back, so I had to upgrade. I was holding out for an update, not wanting to purchase the Mini-4 which is already 2+ years old. The Mini-5 is very fast, responsive and the perfect size for how I use an iPad.

To start things off I want to say that I DID NOT buy this iPad mini off here (Amazon), I bought it from my local AT&T store. Now let's get to the fun part.

I have loved the iPad minis ever since day one when it was announced in late 2012. I loved what it had to offer, I loved the size and usability most importantly. It started off with me buying the 32GB original slate iPad mini with just Wi-Fi. I was just so blown away at everything, how thin it was, that badass slate color, the power, battery life and everything it could do. It was a true iPad just shrunken down into a more portable form factor. It's what truly got me hooked to the iPad mini series. After that I bought the iPad mini 2 when it came out and then the iPad mini 4. After that I stuck with my iPad mini 4 and for a good minute, to be honest I thought it was the end of the iPad mini series because Apple didn't refresh the iPad mini that following year. At this point I started to get scared/sad about what the future may hold for the iPad. Then out of the blue Apple decided to release the iPad mini 5th generation, it took Apple 3 ½ years to do this but hey who's complaining? Like you guys have no idea, I absolutely adore the iPad minis. I was planning on using my iPad mini 4 until it just stopped working LOL. Anyways let's talk briefly about what the 5th gen mini brought to the table.
1. A12 CPU

If you guys haven't heard already this iPad mini is packing the A12 CPU, what does this mean for you? Well to put it briefly it means everything you do on this iPad will be much faster and graphics in games will not only look much better but retain a higher frame rate. You will notice right away apps open in a breeze, it plays games with no stuttering or lag and it may even be more powerful than your laptop. Now you may be saying how is this impossible, it's just a tablet how can it be faster than a full blown computer? It's faster than most laptops for many reasons, one of them being that the hardware and software is designed and build by Apple, by one company in other words. This means maximum optimization! This is something Apple has always had over their competition, it not only just works but works well. The A12 CPU is also built on a 7nm process which means Apple can deliver more power while keeping the tablet just as cool as the old one (the iPad mini 4) and since its more power efficient you can still get that 10 hours of battery life.
2. More RAM, better multitasking

This new iPad mini has 3GB of ram as opposed to the 2GB of ram found in the previous iPad mini. What does this mean for us? This means better multitasking. You can now have 2 windows open in split view mode while also having a video playing. Also thanks to the 3GB of ram you can now have more apps stay open in the background for a longer period of time which also means means snappier performance and who doesn't like that? I personally like having more ram in my devices because for me it means there's a better chance that my device will be supported for a longer amount of time and with iPadOS in the horizon this means the new iPad mini is ready to take advantage of all of the operating systems new features.
3. Higher storage capacities, a darker space grey, Gigabyte LTE, and Apple pencil support

The new mini now starts off with 64GB of flash storage and has a max capacity of 256GB. This is important because the more storage you have the more you can download onto your device and it also doubles the iPad mini 4 max storage capacity. The new "space gray" has a darker tone to it which in my opinion looks much better, something about the newer color screams sleek! This iPad mini also features gigabit LTE which means faster speeds over cellular connection so if you're out and about a lot of the time you will appreciate this feature. As you all may have heard this iPad mini also has support for the 1st gen Apple pencil which is great news for artist or students who like to use digital tablets in class.
4. Other minor improvements and changes

The first minor thing Iv noticed with this new iPad is that the edges of it are now a matte finish instead of that shinny finish. Not a big deal but Iv noticed it. Apple has implemented the "true tone display" within this iPad meaning the iPad tries its best to make the screen look more like paper no matter what room your in, the lighting or where you are. For me its a nice little feature but for others a huge upgrade. Just make sure if your editing a photo to turn it off as it may interfere with how colors look. The antenna bands on the cellular model don't use as much plastic as the previous models. You can see this within my photos Iv taken. The front facing camera has been upgraded to 7MP over that 1.2MP in the 4th gen mini. A very nice upgrade for those who love using that front facing camera. The last thing Iv noticed is that the microphones have been placed in a different location. Instead of the two mikes being on the side by volume buttons both have been moved to the top middle of the iPad, not sure why Apple did this but whatever helps them sleep at night.
My overall thoughts and experience with the iPad mini

I think Apple has improved everything that needed improving, the processor is much faster, the ram has been upgraded to 3GB and the max storage has been upgraded from 128GB to 256GB. I think Apple has done this not to just keep the iPad mini alive but to see how well the iPad mini sells to determine weather or not to keep the iPad mini in the iPad family. This may also determine if Apple introduces a new design with the next generation, fingers crossed! To be totally honest I am very happy with this new iPad mini even though it's using the same old design. Just because its an older design dont mean it dont look pretty, it's still sleek, it's faster in everything it does while also looking better in that darker space gray or the new rose gold option. As soon as I took this iPad mini out of the box I fell in love with it all over again. When I started to use it I noticed right away at how much faster it is when compared to my iPad mini 4. This iPad mini doesn't know the definition of stuttering, it's just all around fast and fluid with whatever I do. Whatever game I play it plays it at max frame rate, whatever web page I load it loads it with no problems, there's just no stopping this beast of an iPad, just because its a mini don't mean its not as every bit powerful as the bigger iPads. This iPad is also great for using in bed because it's not so heavy to hold for long periods of time and the speakers are nice and loud making it great for watching my movies, tv shows, reading up on the latest news in technology, learning how to code and playing my games, this size and weight is so nice I can't stop talking about how great it is. This is the sole reason why I favor the iPad mini over any other iPad!! This is my first iPad mini with LTE so I can't speak much about the speed improvements this new LTE chip provides but I can say that with this LTE chip is real fast and its set for the future. I couldn't be happier with the cellular connectivity this iPad provides. It's nice bringing this iPad out to the store with me or on long car rides. I use to bring my 9.7 inch 5th gen iPad and even though it's real fast for me I find it kind of big and cumbersome to bring with me everywhere, especially with my 2 in 1 keyboard case on it. That's where this iPad mini comes in, just throw this iPad mini in my backpack and I'm good to go, it doesn't even feel like anything is in my backpack from how insanely light this tablet is.
Conclusion

At the end of the day this is the update the iPad mini has needed just to stay alive. It brought the insanely fast A12 CPU, faster LTE speeds, higher storage capacities, a better display that supports the p3 color gamma, Apple pencil support, 3GB of ram, a new darker space grey color and an upgraded 7MP FaceTime camera while staying at a reasonable price ($400.00 gets you 64GB, WiFi) and keeping the original design. Some people may not favor this design but if it's what Apple had to do to keep cost low then so be it! If you're a die hard iPad mini fan like me then this is a no brainer buy for you but if you're in between buying this mini or buying the new iPad air 10.5 I would say ask yourself these few questions.
1. What do you want? Something portable or ultraportable?
2. Do you need to need to do tons of multitasking on your iPad?
3. Do you plan on using a keyboard for extended period's of time with your new iPad/tablet?
4. What do you consider to be cumbersome?

For me the new iPad mini is everything I wanted and it will be for you if you decide to buy it!

If you enjoyed this review please leave a like because it helps me a ton! :) I hope you all enjoyed my review and if not please let me know what I could do better. It's been a good while since my last review and I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences with everybody. I want to help others to decide on whether or not to buy this new iPad mini. I also find it fun typing up these reviews and spending a good amount of time typing all this up. Please also feel free to comment your experiences with the iPad mini or comment your question if you have one! Thank you all for your support!!

Great tablet for reading
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
April 9, 2019

I've had a couple of small Android tablets for reading books and newspapers (via Kindle) and general web articles. This beats those tablets for three reasons. First, the pixel resolution is better. Second, the 4:3 screen ratio is better for reading compared to the 16:9 and 16:10 ratios on the other two tablets. Third, It looks to me that Amazon has better IOS than Android Kindle software. The Android software will sometimes get the pages of the newspaper messed up (NY Times) requiring the software to be reloaded. I have not seen that yet with this tablet.

I bought the space gray color with the base 64G of storage. I did pay extra for the 4G capability because I had a low cost subscription from T-Mobile. The nano-sim quickly moved from my old tablet to this one. I have not tried their eSim option. The overall quality and feel is good but it does better wrapped in a slim no-slip case for carrying around. I'm using a Soke case. The screen is supposed to resist finger smudges but I don't think so plus it seems to be harder to clean.

It's certainly pricey compared to other options especially when you opt for 4G. I probably would have bought the WiFi only version if I did not have such a good data subscription. I expect to keep this for several years so I hope the battery lasts or is easy to change.

Upgraded from an ipad mini 2 and the performance difference is amazing! Much faster. Love the screen, very clear and setup was a snap. Best and most powerful small tablet on the market and runs all aps quickly and smoothly. Very small and light, easy to hold in one hand. Battery life is simply stunning at about 10 hours. Can't recommend highly enough for those looking for a smaller tablet. Great for reading books from as it the size of a book.

Thanks Apple to continue the iPad Mini Series! It is the Perfect Tablet for many of us!

I owned an iPad Mini 2 since 2014, but that is getting slow year by year. I wanted a faster tablet with the same size and the Apple finally decided to continue the mini line, so could replace it. I hope it will serve me well for the next 3-5 years. Thanks Apple, and please keep supporting the mini line for so long!

Great portability

Bought this to replace my original iPad mini (2013), could not be happier. Excellent screen, quick processor, and smooth OS. Chose this over the pro simply because I wanted something portable in between my iPhone 7 Plus and MacBook Pro. No issues so far.

I've always been pretty negative toward Apple products, based on both personal experiences with the brand and the usual perception of poor customization/connectivity options. So imagine my frustration last week when I went shopping for a new Android tablet to use as a secondary computer/eBooks/gaming on the go, only to find out that Android tablets are pretty much garbage in 2019 with laughably outdated specs and withering support from Google. After searching and searching, I finally realized that iPad was the ONLY option with the exact price/performance ratio I was looking for so I swallowed my pride and ordered it. And now I'm glad that I put my prejudice aside, because it's an awesome piece of tech.

The screen on this thing is just gorgeous and worth the money alone. The high pixel density, TrueTone and small form factor make this the comfiest eBook reader I have ever used. The selection of apps and games is great, and I feel like there's a lot more "premium" options than you can find on Google Play. Battery life seems to live up to its promises, with mine only down to 58% with the screen active for about 7 hours. It also charges insanely fast. The lack of Android-level customization is real, but I can appreciate the whole "it just works" philosophy of iOS. Especially since my primary device is a Windows 10 PC on which something seems to stop working every other day. Very smooth, very polished UX that feels like a truly optimized tablet experience, and not just an oversized phone.

The only real complaint I have so far is the thing's sometimes unintuitive reliance on gestures and precise swipes. I shouldn't have to give the screen a massage every time I want to do a simple thing like view and close apps I'm not using. But overall, it has absolutely met my expectations. Hopefully Apple continues to develop the Mini line, because I can see it permanently becoming my go-to tablet.

Love my iPad mini!!!

I love my iPad mini! It's my first apple tablet. I love the size of the screen and that the weight of the tablet isn't too much for my wrists. I purchased this tablet for on the go productivity, reading, webinars and other stuff. Definitely worth the price and it is a beautiful device. Way better than the Samsung tablet I purchased years ago (which stopped charging, the speakers stopped working and it was very slow)! I love that all my favorite stuff was easy to install and load. It's super fast and sensitive to touch which I wasn't expecting but am very pleased with how everything responds so fast. I'm definitely thinking about purchasing the pencil to go with it for notes and maybe other things. Can't wait to use this for library school classes! I can definitely see me using this tablet for a long time.

i chose right!

When I decided to purchase a new tablet I sat down and did some research. I paid attention to what similar devices i owned before (Galaxy Tab 7", Surface 3, Kindle Paperwhite*) and how I used them. I also thought about what devices I currently own (iPhone XR, Asus Zenbook 13, Dell Inspiron 15). Keeping these details in mind while also thinking about what i want to do with the tablet helped in the decision making process. I wanted something that i can hold a read for extended periods without issue. I wanted something with a recent top end processor and a high quality screen, I also wanted something that would take full advantage of my various cloud storage options. I also did not want anything bigger than this as my laptop was already a 13" device so there was no need to go any bigger than this one.

Pros:
-Good size body that you can hold for a while and not feel any strain
-amazing screen quality and better than EVERYTHING else at that price point
-included charger works as a fast charger for my iPhone
-processor is ridiculously fast
-works with 1st gen apple pencil

Cons:
-screen size is hampered by the bezels a bit, i normally don't mind bezels much feel they look a bit bigger than i would like them to on this device.
